I never thought I'd say this but "Purple Rain" seems to be the most underrated album of the 80s. I think it was so popular that many Prince fans dismiss it. But it was one of his best 80s albums without a doubt, if not the best. It was sure better than Madonna's albums, that's for sure. It is of course all 100% subjective, but Purple Rain should get more votes than it does.

That's usually the case when it comes to an artist's single biggest selling album. If you were to find a thread like this on a Springsteen or Michael Jackson site, you probably wouldn't find most of their hardcore fans listing Born In The USA, or Thriller as their best '80s albums. The media saturation (mainly airplay) of an album can jade the most ardent fans while simultaneously making them forget what made said album special in the fist place. If it's pounded into your head enough for 20 years, there's a good chance you'll end up taking it for granted.

Not specifically you, anybody.

NWF saidThose are some OK choices, but how about a little more diveristy in your choosings? For pete's sake, where's The Gang of Four, The Smiths, The Violent Femmes, Bob Dylan, War,R.E.M., The Clash, Guns & Roses, U2, Elvis Costello, Human League, The Specials, Killing Joke, The B-52's, Aztec Camera, Sinead O'Connor, The Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, The Pixies, ABC, Bob Marley, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Boyz II Men, Cyndi Lauper, Basement Jaxx, Howard Jones...sigh I can go on & on.

Or are you just basing this thread on your own personal preference?

then garnis said, to no one's surprise:
No Shit!! It looks like Moonbeams listens to Madonna, Eurythmics, Bowie, and Prince exclusively

talk to the hand . . . Now wait a minute.

Who made you guys the Music Police? Because I want to file a report.

You've each got great taste in music, but that doesn't give you license to act like snobs.

Diversity is all well and good, but why should someone have a diverse list for the sole purpose of proving their hipness or music knowledge? No one has anything to prove to anyone on this site.

'beam, keep on doin' what you do.

Thanks namepeace! I never claimed my taste was good. But I'll be damned if I don't have a right to like what I like!

It's not about me trying to prove anything or trying to be some sort of musicl tyrant. I was simply wondering why Moonbeam's list wasn't filled with the artists I namechecked. But then he told me that this list was based on preference. I ain't trying to come to come off like a snob or anything. I respect what y'all like but I was just hoping for something a lil' more eclectic. Jeez. rolleyes

Well then I apologize if I took it the wrong way. garnis displays a lot of music snobbery, and he's been nasty to moonbeam before, and I hate that. I mistakenly sensed that in your post.

I think now I understand what you're saying. You originally understood the list to be the "greatest" instead of the "favorites." I thought it was "favorites." My bad.

It's all good. Let's forget this debate and go listen to some Tear for Fears.
