American Singer/Songwriter. Did the soundtrack for "Good Will Hunting". His best album is "Figure 8", my favourite Song "Everything reminds me of her". I still hope, that this sad news is false, but it´s all over the internet.

TRON

by Jason Ankeny
Folk-punk singer/songwriter Elliott Smith rose from indie obscurity to mainstream success in 1997 on the strength of "Miss Misery," his Academy Award-nominated song from the film Good Will Hunting. A native of Portland, OR, Smith began writing and recording his first songs at age 14, later becoming a fixture of the city's thriving music scene; as a member of the band Heatmiser, he debuted in 1993 with the LP Dead Air, issuing his first solo effort Roman Candle on the tiny Cavity Search label a year later. For his 1995 self-titled album, Smith signed with the noted Kill Rock Stars label; Either/Or followed in 1997, around the same time that filmmaker and longtime fan Gus Van Sant requested permission to use the singer's music in his upcoming Good Will Hunting. Smith also composed a handful of new songs for the soundtrack, among them "Miss Misery," and when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its Oscar nominations the following February, the track was a surprise entry in the "Best Original Song" category. Although he did not win, Smith performed the song live at the televised Oscar broadcast, appearing onstage alongside superstars Trisha Yearwood and eventual award-winner Celine Dion in one of the most notably surreal musical moments in recent memory; his DreamWorks label debut, XO, followed later in 1998, and Figure 8 arrived in early 2000.

I don't really know anything about him, but this is sad news.

Suicides are always upsetting, but my immediate thought is he must have been in major distress to have done it with a knife! disbelief

NO WAY. omg He was recording his sixth album, 'From A Basement On The Hill' recently too.

I adored the stuff he did on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack:

Miss Misery is beautiful,

it's a great soundtrack,

HE was a great artist.

Godspeed Elliot. x

So sad. I got into his music about 2 years ago when a friend of mine loaned me his CD Either Or. His lyrics were beautiful and his voice reminded me of John Lennon. I always thought he should have been bigger commercially than he was. Well, unfortunately now he probably will be.

It is very sad news indeed. I loved Figure 8.

If there can be a positive, hopefully this will help his music get the recognition it deserves, like happened to Jeff Buckley.

This is sad. I live in Silverlake near where the Figure 8 album cover was shot, so everytime I walk by that building, I always think of that album...

Omigod...Oh my fucking God.

I just lost my breath. I used to LOVE Elliot. I had his first two albums (on the Kill Rock Stars label) and his song "Needle in the Hay" got me through a lot.

Actually, before I moved to Michigan, I lived in Longview, WA and his self-titled album was the LAST CD I bought in that town.

Sad...so sad.

I'll miss you, Elliot.

Very sad news but this headline was a bit misleading, no?

"Singer Smith Apparently Commits Suicide"

How many people thought it was another Smith, kind of depressing one at that, who killed himself. Now that wo8ld have really upset me. I'm sad for this guy, but I'm kind of glad it wasn't Robert Smith.
