Someone PLEASE extoll the virtues of Tori Amos. I must admit, this is one artist that has so far flown under my radar. I only have a couple of her albums and have never really been struck by either one. This prevents me from buying her other stuff.
Don't get me wrong. I love her as an artist. I'm attracted to her interpretation of the tumult in her life. She is an extremely interesting person. I am and always have been obsessed with the song "Professional Widow" (album cut) but I feel that I haven't given her the proper chance. I know I'm late on this but I feel that there is something here that I'm missing. Tell me what it is PLEASE edit.... I love Natalie Merchant. I just need the connect with Tori. I think what I probably need to do is just take some quiet time and sequester myself and just give her a solid listen. That might help. She is just too fabulous not to love. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

She is just too fabulous not to love. the reason i asked about natalie is because every last one of my friends who really get into tori don't really get into natalie...and vice versa...i can't explain that, though

I dunno, I've never been able to "get" Tori either...I've heard a lot of her stuff, seen her live a few times, but have NEVER gotten into it. I'll keep an eye on this thread though to see if anyone gives some helpful advice..

I mean I almost feel like I'm committing a sin. I love her person and am so intrigued by her but her music has never captured me, with a few exceptions... 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I don't know what to tell you. My fave album is "Under the Pink" and her latest, "Scarlet's Walk". I get really depressed when I listen to her, or when I am depressed.. you get the point. I think you just get into her or you don't. For example, I know lots of people with great musical taste who love David Bowie. I'm just not there yet with him. Give it time. I do think her songs are catchy though.. so if you don't get it the first couple times.. i dunno, now I'm rambling.

That one album is great - you know - the one she keeps re-doing.
The groany super hot redhead thing really works for her. Beyond that, I get nothing. But yeah, "Little Earthquakes" is a GREAT album to hate your lover to. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

keep in mind, supa, it may be hard to relate to some of her work due to the fact that she was high on mescaline and peyote for some of it! go to thedent.com and check out some of the bits and pieces about her career and lyrics and stories behind the songs. that'll get you feeling something.

Her first 3 albums are great, but From The Choirgirl Hotel annoyed me so much,I stopped listening to her. I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

I didn't get into that album as much either. Listen to "Scarlet's Walk". It is more traditional Tori. Trust me.

I slept on that one for a long time cuz it was so different from what I was used to. But I took to Venus right away. Strange that.

And yeah, i don't listen to any others - after she moaned her way through Nine Inch Nails and THEN Nirvana (or was it the other way around?) it seemed to be TOO MUCH formula for the girl. And yeah - you know me - I ain't into keyboard-only bands too much. Now stop nodding at me, rolling your eyes, and high-fiving each other! Stop it! now! no one is as unhinged as Tori... and of course i mean that in a good way... it's hard to get "into" Tori, in my opinion... it either clicks or it doesn't. Tori herself said she was like "anchovies" - some will like, some won't.

Under the Pink: God had some guitar on it. Boys for Pele... can't remember much guitar on that. From the Chorigirl Hotel was a little more varied, more instruments, etc and she had a guitarist on tour. But she has gone past the piano-girl thing. I'm not too into that either, after a while it's boring. I got some killer live mp3s of songs reworked with guitar added, like Blood Roses, iieee and Professional Widow. WOW.

Tori's pretty cool...really different from anyone else that's out there. I don't really listen to her much but I have a couple of her albums (had an ex that really digs her and HAD to burn them for me) but I would say that if you haven't seen her live, that might be the missing link. I "got" her a lot more live than I did listening to the records and I didn't really know too many of the tunes either. I thought Venus was cool although some of the people I know who like her didnt like that record. My favorite track by her is probably "Spark." And I think that even people who only dig bands would really like this track. But I would say, if ya haven't seen her live, drop a couple bucks and do it, cuz even if you don't "get" her after that, you're still in for a hell of a show!
