This chart is the main reason why I don't listen to the radio anymore,or watch MTV/BET.This is the only stuff that gets played and I'm sick of it! Most of today's hip-hop is pure crap, and yet it gets shoved down the throats of record-buyers.And before anyone gets on my case for dissing rap,I'll let you know that I do like some rap,the good stuff. But unfortunately,it's the awful stuff that gets all the attention, sales, awards and airplay.

David, you're a fuckin' star. worship

I was just thinking last night how you can hardly tell one Rap/Hip-hop/R&B artist from another anymore. What a dire industry it is.

Its funny that I barely hear any of these songs on the radio here in NY. You hear Baby Boy and Where is the Love, and Frontin, but the rest nowhere to be found. The top hits have Donna Summer, Britney & Modonna, dance stuff like Amuka/You Don't Appreciate Me, Rock Your Body by Stagga Lee, etc. I Don't know why these, most popular, songs are not seen on the charts. Do they not go on airplay aymore?

this weeks tops at radio:

18-You're So Beautiful - Donna Summer

Wow,"You're So Beautiful" is really getting airplay in NY? That's a kickass dance track, but here in the Bay Area, they're ignoring it sad

That's because New York radio is stuck on itself. New York is a VERY provincial city. Its media is geared towards itself. I lived in NYC the entire summer and it's a very self-centered city. Hot 97 & WBLS are very mainstream and primarly feature hometown/tri-state artists (Nas, Ashanti, P. Diddy, Lil Kim, 50 Cent, Foxy, Jay-Z, and anyone who happens to link up with them) or some reggae (NYC has a huge caribbean population). NYC pop stations are lifeless just like any other metropolitan area. New York urban radio doesn't play southern rap/hip hop and they SCARCELY bump anything from the west coast or midwest. On the other hand, the rest of the nation tends to bump an ecclectic mix of music from all over the country. For instance, I'm currently in Detroit and urban radio plays techno, hip hop, R&B, local music, non-mainstream, etc. Same thiing goes for Los Angeles. You'll never hear garage or house music on Hot 97 or Power 107. I think Los Angeles and Chicago have the most ecclectic radio dials out of all the metro areas I've been to (THIS IS MY OPINION), but it's starting to falter as well because people don't really focus on local music lately.

As for pop radio, pop doesn't play rap music anyway unless it's the BIGGEST URBAN CROSSOVER HIT and its unescapably commercial (e.g. Missy "Work It," Nelly "Ride Wit Me," Chingy "Right Thurr," Wayne Wonder "No Letting Go," etc.) They'll rarely bump Jurassic 5 or some Rah Digga track.

The NYC dance music scene is OFF THE JUMP though (...but that's not on the radio) :-X

But to really, really "KEEP IT REAL" I don't truely listen to the radio anyway ever since the advent of Napster and internet file sharing back in '99. LOL.

...oh yeah and add the iPod to that.

LOL.

whodknee

Rap's gone the way of jazz and rock before it. I wish somebody would prove me wrong. Then again, something new would be nice.

What does this have to do with a 'pop' geared station playing:

Donna Summer
Luther Vandross
Dannii Minogue
Britney
Blu Cantrell
Amuka
Deborah Cox
etc.

That are not even on the pop sales chart? I say, Way to go! I'm just saying that pop stations are not ALL down on the rap tip. It seems to be the fashionable thing to do/play.
