Still y'all need to cop this and get back to me: It's Norman Whitfiled & the Funk Bros. at their FUNKADELIC stealin' best!! Psychedelic Soul [US] - TEMPTATIONS Includes all these great trax (watch the UK version it's a cheapie 1 disc!). 1. Cloud Nine (Strong/Whitfield) - 3:32 2. Runaway Child Running Wild (Strong/Whitfield) - 9:34 3. Don't Let the Joneses Get You Down (Strong/Whitfield) - 4:45 4. I Can't Get Next to You (Strong/Whitfield) - 2:55 5. Message from a Black Man (Strong/Whitfield) - 6:06 6. Slave (Strong/Whitfield) - 7:34 7. Psychedelic Shack [#] (Strong/Whitfield) - 6:22 8. You Make Your Own Heaven and Hell Right... Ungena Za Ulimengu (Unite the World) (Strong/Whitfield) - 4:30 16. Love Can Be Anything (Can't Nothing Be... (Strong/Whitfield) - 9:23 17. Take a Look Around (Strong/Whitfield) - 3:12 18. Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You... (Strong/Whitfield) - 2:56 19. Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On (Strong/Whitfield) - 3:13 20. Papa Was Rollin' Stone (Strong/Whitfield) - 12:04 21. Plastic Man (Whitfield) - 5:59 22. Masterpiece (Whitfield) - 13:50 23. Ain't No Justice (Whitfield) - 6:07 I've always loved the Black macho of the Tempts in the 70s! Good choice... I was gonna put Pychedelic Shack/All Directions 2-album/1-cd on ma list. Fuckit, here's a more thought provoking list than my last one for you folks: 1. Cymande: Cymande (a best of). Forgotten classic afrocentric-funk/soul act. These guys, like Mandrill, were just too good for their time. 2. Shuggie Otis: Inspiration Information. Come on, EVERYone must have this by now. 3. Rasputin Stash: The Devil Made Me Do It. Digging for rare groove uncovers a lot of crap. I liked these guys soulful nasty-bass funk so its an album I go back to a lot. "How do you feel, when the man next to ya, hogs the smoke?" 'Bootsy March' off this is high up on my funkiest jams list...has one of those basses that aims to kill you with slow, throbbing sonic bludgens...kinda. 4. The Bar-Kays: Money Talks. May, or may not contain the funkiest song ever known to man. 'Nuff said. 5. Oneness of Juju: Space Jungle Love. Strange percussive afrocentric funk. Wonderful jazzy rythms and melodies. 6. Dr. John: Gris-Gris. Stoner funk. Not in the 'Free Your Ass...' sense, but funk for sure. Not funk in the Meters sense of the word, but from New Orleans nonetheless. When I first heard this, I realised I had not, and would not hear anything like it. 7. Maxwell: Embrya. I know what you're gonna say, but for me, when combining with a beautiful woman, the last thing you want is to be able to decipher lyrics that might distract you from your rythm and rubbing techniques. You want sounds that are in perfect sync with the blood pumping through your stick. Embrya was designed with that precise purpose. And it's the funkiest fuck music imo. I've tried it to Unfunky UFO and the scrunchy-face I get aint due to the friction. 8. Games, Dames & Guitar Thangs: Eddie Hazel. Download the tracks off Kazaa until they release this bitch on CD, and get down to some bliss California Dreamin'...the funk of 'Physical Love' and 'What About It' is gonna kill you though. 9. D Train: Best of the 12" Remixes. I was dancing to Puff the Magic Dragon when these guys busted grooves. Luckily there are a club in London that remembers this funk. 10. Marvin Gaye: Midnight Love and the Sexual Healing Sessions (2cd Lim.Ed.). What's Goin' On? Bah! Check out the best soul voice ever combined with spunky 80's funk with a little helping from Rick James, 'cause his stankiness was hot then and Marvins career was so-so. Lists ARE fun...yaaay! He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. - Albert Einstein

Oh yeah, and I forgot about Shuggie Otis. He was such an underrated genius. I like his version of "Strawberry Letter 23" better than The Brothers Johnson's. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

aalloca said: Otan,
You are kind of right with Chic however songs like everybody dance and soup for one have a non stop bass line that makes you get that slapped silly look ...like when your mama used to get you with wooden spoon. That nasty type of funk.. Disco is a more polished version of funk when done right.. If you want to put Chic on your list, go ahead. Chic had The Funk. Any band that would have had Nile and Bernard would have had The Funk. However, their sound transcended the era they sprung from so much that they weren't totally disco or all the way Funk either. Hell, people have Duran Duran, Talking Heads, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, why not Chic? This isn't to say those bands never got funky, because they did. I just never heard an entire album of Funk from them. Of the three the Heads took it to furthest. Headhunters was an album I bought out of a recommendation but the basslines are boring in my opinion. still did the keyboards though.

Psychedelic Soul [US] - TEMPTATIONS Includes all these great trax (watch the UK version it's a cheapie 1 disc!). What about their 6 cd box set, you got that one? Of course! EMPERORS OF SOUL is a comprehensive overview. Too exhausting to listen to all at once. This compilation brings together the Whitfield political trax & funk jams (I'm very jaded nowadays and have no use for love songs). That's really why I don't want to buy it, I don't want to pay for all the "moon in june" love songs (as Marvin used to call them). I'm mainly interested in their late '60s thru '70s era, when their sound got harder and heavier. Not just because of technology, but because of Whitfield's production and the content of songwriting. If I never hear "My Girl" again it'll be too soon. And I am interested in hearing "Smiling Faces." This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
