The Love Below...Outkast

by Andre 3000 sounds like a lost prince album! Particularly she lives in my lap and spread. Any club members with me on this one?

Postin a thread like this is cool, because Outkast is good.. but what the heck are u thinking putting in the music club section? This has NOTHING to do with the club, Prince and Im pretty sure your opinion on how its a lost prince albums doesnt make it relevant to post in the musicclub section...

Yea, I can see the Prince influence, clear as if it was poking my eye out, BUT it isn't anywhere as good as a "lost" Prince album. I mean, compare "Love Below" to "High" and/or "Dream Factory" and the former comes up short. Prince has waaay more subtlety and finesse than Andre 3000. If anything, Andre sounds like a better brought up version of Kool Keith.

Don't get me wrong. I love Outkast. I love "Speakerboxxx/Love Below". Hip hop album of the year.

Oh ... and shouldn't this be in the Non-Prince Music section?

"Prototype" is the jam! music

And I think Pink & Blue sounds a little Prince-ish.

Enough with the clichés.

"Dracula's Wedding" too. That song is too short.

I thought I was the only one thinking that with Dracula's Wedding. That acoustic guitar riff is sweet, and it definitely needs to be longer!!

But to me, my fav jam on here will always be Prototype, especially towards the end with the synth line all by it self. Really pretty!!!

I was thinking about that synth part today. It would be cool if they did a remix of that song with just those synth chords and a hard electronic beat. Sort of in the same vein as "Something In The Water".

I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed w/ The Love Below/Speakerboxxx & Worldwide Underground sad

There's some cuts I like on The Love Below (Spread, I'm in Love Again, Behold a Lady, Happy Valentines Day, whatever the jazzy instrumental is called - forgive me if I've botched the titles) but there's definitely some throwaway stuff & too many damn interludes (@ least the multiple interludes on Stankonia were entertaining).

I think I listened to 1 song all the way through on Speakerboxxx whofarted

Worlwide Underground just didn't move me @ all. I always expect her to kick my ass (Mama's Gun was fanfuckingtastic) but that shit bored me to tears sigh

Come on MeShell, I need some good new music up in here!
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Check out she's alive and vibrate- two sleeper hits
Wouldn't it be funny to hear Prince cover one of these at his show, like he did did'nt you know one the ona tour, he could do some damage to prototype.

The word "masterpiece" doesn't automatically hit me when I listen to it like it does some people. It has enough dross on it to keep it from being a masterpiece. But it does have some darn good songs. Enough to the point that this is the first Outkast album I won't eliminate from my collection.

I forgive Erykah after reading that she had writer's block and had been contracted (probably pressured) to record something. She agreed to do this EP of songs she had been performing live off and on throughout her tour. I don't think it's intended to be compared to Mama's Gun.

Regarding The Love Below, sorry to hear you didn't like it, but you do list at least 4 or 5 songs off the album that you like, which surpasses my personal 3-song minimum for me to buy an album. (Although I love both projects for different reasons in their entirety... but I've been an Outkast fan since Southernplayalistic.)

And oh yeah wave Calhoun hug

OUTKAST, "SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW" (LAFACE)

News about the fifth album from Atlanta's wildly inventive hip-hop duo didn't bode well: Andre "3000" Benjamin (a.k.a. Dre) and his comic sidekick Antwan "Big Boi" Patton had opted to make two solo albums that would be sold together as a package (shades of the four infamous Kiss solo discs!). The charm of the crew had always been that the two members balanced each other out, or so the thinking went. But rather than diluting Outkast's potent mix, this set proves that the members have more than enough creativity to merit such a sprawling canvas, whether they're working separately or together.

Yes, there is a fair amount of self-indulgence here, as there was on the equally impressive "Stankonia" (2000). Some of the comic skits wear thin fast, and some of the musical detours go nowhere special. But the high points are very high indeed, the set is priced right at about the cost of a single disc, and the overall effect is that of a diverse, genre-hopping and thoroughly mind-warping musical feast, with tracks ranging from electro-pop to hardcore funk, and from psychedelic rap to jazzy hip-hop, with some surprising guests popping up along the way (among them Norah Jones, Atlanta homeboy Cee-Lo and platinum superstar Jay-Z).

Many fans knew Dre (who sings in his nasal whine more than he raps) as the soulful, sensitive and more tuneful member of the duo, but Big Boi comes on strong, showing a lot more range and depth than he has in the past. (In wanting to step outside his Flavor-Flav role, he may well have been the one pushing for the double -disc format.) Lyrically, the rappers veer from heartfelt comments about the power of faith and family to incisive political commentary to sheer horny silliness, some of it brilliant and some of it b.s. But the albums really succeed on the strength and scope of the music: To match this kind of ambition, you'd have to reach back to vintage Prince, Parliament-Funkadelic or Sly and the Family Stone, and hip-hop has seldom seen its peer.

Jim DeRogatis--Chicago Sun Times.
