Yeah I'll go along With Blood Sugar Sex Magik. That and One Hot Minute kick ass.

EWF deserve a bit of respect for their early to mid 70s stuff too.

"Synchronized" by Jamiroquai (1999)

Are you serious, brother?

Yes,I'm serious smile

Have you heard this album? Listen to tracks like "Planet Home" and "Where Do We Go From Here",and tell me that ain't funky!! Jamiroquai has earned their funk credibility.

I used to work with these guys when they started off, so I know their funk very well. I have always looked at them as a band that lacks innovation... They have brought some fresh flavor to the charts, thats fure sure, and I wouldnt think they`d be that successful. They play pretty well, but live in concert they lack the real feeling.. the real soul. They are too technical in my opinion, and that whole "save the planet" shit was a farce to make money.
Like I said, they are good, but to list them on your funk top ten would be a disgrace to hardworking soulful groups like Mandrill, the New Birth and James Brown, just to name a few.
Do you see my point? Its only my opinion, of course.
wink

I find Jamiroquai to be totally refreshing in this era of samples and non-musicians dominating the scene. These guys are making real retro-funk music, with very little interest in the trends and styles that are popular today.I've never seen them in concert so I can't comment on their live performances. But on their CDs,they kick major ass.'A Funk Odyssey' is the best album (by any artist) I've heard in this decade so far and the next album promises to be even funkier.Supposedly, they'll be getting back to basics.

I was curious why Dave would use Jamiroquai. Pardon me for using your thread to ask him. wink

You gotta have a little variety in your funk diet, bro smile

Yes,James Brown,The New Birth and Mandrill are funky as hell, but throw a little Jamiroquai in the mix too.

I agree with almost all you say here. But they in fact DO have a large commercial interest. Jamiroquai is a british club music band, which is indeed non-commercial where you live. But over here, they were considered very commercial when they came out. That was at the height of the Acid Jazz movement.

Where's CHIC?

Nile and Bernard... funky as hell.

Loved that someone picked Vic... YO VICTOR!!!

RHCP- Blood Sugar is also a classic

On the Jamiroquai topic. Stuart Zender who played on Space Comboy and Travelling layed down some of the best basslines in recent history. Whether its original or not I think it still grooves.

Talking heads always deserve a nod..

Good Picks all around.

Of course! EMPERORS OF SOUL is a comprehensive overview. Too exhausting to listen to all at once. This compilation brings together the Whitfield political trax & funk jams (I'm very jaded nowadays and have no use for love songs).

BTW: PS forms a great companion piece with

Music for Your Mother

and

Tear the Roof Off 1974-1980

Pure funk heaven for your 6CD changer!! horns

Makes me wanna take a long road trip (except my kids would make me play RADIO DISNEY)!!

Kick it in. The ALL TIME top ten. not just the ones you're into today, but, if you had to take 10 wreckas with you and have only those, which ones would you take?

Obviously, purists will insist that "Greatest Hits" don't count, but, I cannot live without Sly's Anthology.

1. Sly Stone Anthology
2. S.O.T.T.
3. Gap Band III.
4. James Brown: Love Power Peace
5. Best of K.C. and the Sunshine Band
6. Dag: Righteous
7. Robert Palmer: Sneaking Sally Thru the Alley (which is a trick answer because the band is the Funky Meters)
8. Soul Coughing: Baby Vroom
9. Stevie Wonder: Musiquarium
10. David Ryan Harris solo album.

Jamiraquai are awesome in a derivative way, the same way Lenny Kravitz is awesome... if you can get past the entire digesting a particular artist and giving you a record that they woulda put out now if they were still putting out hits issue, then I can dig them.

I really dig Jamiraquai as long as I avoid comparing them to Stevie Wonder's early 70's releases. Ditto with Lenny and ANY successful record from the 70's. As long as you pretend they're not just completely chameleoning someone else's brillance, it's awesome.

And Chic? I dug them, but I'd hardly put them in the funk basket. Disco man. And while the two are conjoined, Disco had an elegance and sweetness to it that funk discarded. I'm my opinion. Ain't saying you're wrong to include them, just saying, Good Times, Le Freak, those are disco standards. Nile's playing definitely had an impact on future legends, but I'd still say they weren't as much funk as they were Disco.

Otan,

You are kind of right with Chic however songs like everybody dance and soup for one have a non stop bass line that makes you get that slapped silly look ...like when your mama used to get you with wooden spoon. That nasty type of funk.. Disco is a more polished version of funk when done right..

I am all about the basslines. Great thread though.

Some of the stuff people are writing in I am like oh yeah that does groove...

Like Slave... Brothers Johnson... I am surprised no one picked some Brecker Brothers...

Headhunters was an album I bought out of a recommendation but the basslines are boring in my opinion. still did the keyboards though.
Music is the best...
