Top 10 Funk Albums - incl Prince

Kick it in. The ALL TIME top ten. not just the ones you're into today, but, if you had to take 10 wreckas with you and have only those, which ones would you take?

Obviously, purists will insist that "Greatest Hits" don't count, but, I cannot live without Sly's Anthology.

1. Sly Stone Anthology
2. S.O.T.T.
3. Gap Band III.
4. James Brown: Love Power Peace
5. Best of K.C. and the Sunshine Band
6. Dag: Righteous
7. Robert Palmer: Sneaking Sally Thru the Alley (which is a trick answer because the band is the Funky Meters)
8. Soul Coughing: Baby Vroom
9. Stevie Wonder: Musiquarium
10. David Ryan Harris solo album.

My top 10 would all be p-funk (or related) albums.

Cool thread Otan...

Subject to change:

1. Mutiny: How's Your Loose Booty? (a 'best of')
2. Funkadelic: Standing on the Verge of Getting It On
3. Prince: The Black Album
4. The J.B.'s: Funky Good Times: The J.B's Anthology
5. Mandril: Mandril Is
6. Herbie Hancock: Man-Child
7. Victor Wooten: A Show of Hands
8. Zapp: Zapp
9. The Meters: Rejuvenation
10. Jeff Beck: Blow By Blow

I should obviously have Shaft, Superfly and Mothership Connection in there but I'd have to sacrifice some names that folks might not have heard...

Dude you can have Pat Boone's Metal Tribute album, ain't no rules, ain't nobody judging your coolio factor in this one. YOUR top ten. I'm looking for diversity here. If EVERYONE put "Mothership Connection" and "Riot" and "Fullfillingness", it would be a boring list of top tens... so go for it. Put Earth Wind and Fire, Emerson Lake and Palmer or even Crosby Stills and Nash. It's what YOU think is funky.

These are the funkiest ablums in my collection. (This will explain a lot about me.)

Duran Duran - Notorious mr.green
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Meshell NdegeOcello - Plantation Lullabies
PM Dawn - Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross
Depeche Mode - Violator
Deee-Lite - World Clique
Prince - Graffiti Bridge
Wendy & Lisa - Fruit at the Bottom

Damn, only 8. I can't add anymore without doubling up on an artist or stretching it really bad. There are some funky tracks by other artists that I can think of, but not full ablums per se.

sigh

Oh! Manki just sent me some compilations he burned for me: 1 Bootsy cd and 1 Sly and the Family Stone.

Do you have the Black Album or 1999? Would you consider Graffiti Bridge more funkier? No ones right or wrong, I just find the definition of funk interesting...can be quite subjective sometimes!

I used to work with these guys when they started off, so I know their funk very well. I have always looked at them as a band that lacks innovation... They have brought some fresh flavor to the charts, thats fure sure, and I wouldnt think they`d be that successful. They play pretty well, but live in concert they lack the real feeling.. the real soul. They are too technical in my opinion, and that whole "save the planet" shit was a farce to make money.
Like I said, they are good, but to list them on your funk top ten would be a disgrace to hardworking soulful groups like Mandrill, the New Birth and James Brown, just to name a few.
Do you see my point? Its only my opinion, of course.

Yeah, but, like I said, no judging other's funk pinions on this one. I WANT a wide breadth of selections. Otherwise, like I said, every list would be "James Brown, 21 hits", "Sly anthology", "Stevie Key of life" etc. I want a wide listing. Like INXS. And the Stones. They got some funky shit but because they're mainstream rock, folks ignore killer stuff like "Hot Stuff" or "Need you Tonight". If it's a hit on white radio, does that invalidate the funk potential?

Yeah, I have all of Prince's cds. Truthfully, if I really wanted to name the funkiest cds in my collection, it would have been all prince cds. Well, except maybe for RHCP and Meshell... More Funkier? Well, I thought Graffiti Bridge was a good choice since it had George and the Time on it. Kinda killin a few birds with the only stone I have...

I'm testin positiiive fo the funk...

I'll glady peee in anybody's cup...
