I'm completing my P-funk collection and I have a question

Lately,I've been buying alot of P-Funk CDs,trying to complete my collection.Just last week,I ordered these two CDs on-line...

"Hardcore Jollies" by Funkadelic (1976)
"Chocolate City" by Parliament (1975)

I've never heard these particular albums,so what can I expect?

I am not sure, but I heard that Andre3000 was very inspired by Pfunk's sounds on his latest album, "The Love Below." Maybe that will give you sense of what to expect? nana

HardCore Jollies Is the album they released to Warner as they made the transition from the Indie lable Westbound. Most of the material is very guitar oriented with the addition of the new guitarist ( at the time ) Michael Kidd Funkadelic Hampton. Who was discovered after playing a note for note rendition of Maggot Brain. And thus if you look in the credits the album is dedicated to guitar players of the world. However the rest of the album is straight ahead funk, with songs like Comin round the mountain which is actualy veteran Eddie Maggot Brain Hazel Doing the solo at the end, as well as songs like, Smokey, If you got funk You got style and my favorite Soul Mate. All have a nice funky groove that could be danced to with Smokey being the more laid back of the two. The album also contains a live version Cosmic Slop from there 5th release on the Westbound Lable, and a laid back blissful groove calle Adolencent Funk. This album was recorded at the same time as Tales Of Kidd Funkadelic and is a good selection with some key stand out moments like the title track ( A guitar Monster!)

Chocalate City is Parliament starting to sound like Parliament. The opening title track is one of the first to feature a funky rap by George Clinton in the Style of StarChild later to be done again On P Funk Wants to get Funked up. Bootsy Lends quite a hand on this one as a early single of his before he even joined the band is redone called together. The First side is pretty upbeat with a knockout jam callled side effects. The second side is not as cohesive but it is still a fun listen with George doing his early Doo Wop influence thing on I misjudged You. Let Me Know what you think of those and if you have more ?'s I will be happy to answer them - Peace

I highly recomend you seek out the rare Eddie Hazel solo album Games Dames and Guitar thangs. This hidden gem is hard to find and never reissued. yet it is more than worth the price. It pops up on ebay often and sells anywhere from 25$ to 80$. It has a cover of California Dreamin that will blow your mind and a cover of the Beatles I Want You ( She's So Heavy ) That you have to hear. If you have a record player go get this one.

By the way I really enjoyed the information you had Meloh...fascinating stuff! I'm assuming you were a child of the mothership?! I'd love to have seen the guys in their prime, but I have to be satisfied with the occasional Allstars turnout...(no Eddie cry)

Make sure you get the Remasters for both.CC has bonus trax.
I would say both are essential to the collection , CC especially.CC also has the "If it dont fit" track that you mentioned on one of your other threads."Big Footin'" is hilarious.

Hardcore has "Smokey"(funky as hell) and "Comin' Round the Montain" and a smokin'live version of "Cosmic Slop"

You might need to take a shower after these two. lol

Maggot Brain, if by child of the Mothership you mean that I was there, well Im sad to say I was not. I just turned 28 last wensday Sept 24th. I really took time out to study the music I love. Music became my solace at a very early age and I use it as a escape. Eddie Hazel Just so happens to also be one of my favorite guitar players of all time. If I created a list of my favorite albums Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On would be in the top ten. With every track written or co written by Hazel. Good Thoughts Bad Thoughts is pure bliss.

Ahh, this would have to be my 2nd favourite Funkadelic album for sure wink

Yeah the ignoramous in me assumed you would have been there what with the knowledge you shared! I wouldn't mind reading some of the auto/bio's flying around for the P-funk lot. You're a year younger than me and you talk p-funk as if you were a roadie...I dig your passion dude.

Hey, have you heard of 'Mutiny'? I've been mentioning their 'best of' compilation to a few p-funkers on here but no-one seems to have heard their stuff. Apparently Jerome Brailey split from the mob (due to the usual $/credit reasons) and came up with his own crew (hence the name). Anyway some of the stuff on this comp is SO DAMN ON THE ONE, and is still spinning in my crib 6 months after first descovering it.

Unfortunately I have yet to receive co-sign.

Mutiny sounds familiar. There are still P - funk side projects that I have not got my hands on. I saw the Sweat Band album once but I couldnt get it at the time. I just moved to Madison and Im kind of worried that I will not be able to find stuff like I could in Chicago. I dont even think Prince plays ( or have many fans for that matter ) out here.

By The way, you said Standing On The Verge Is Your 2nd favorite. What would you rate your # 1 Funkadelic release. Do you have the Funkadelic Live 1971 CD Import. The Live version of Maggot Brain is tite.

His favourite LP may have a linking to his P.Org ID at a guess, hehe. The 1971 CD is great, I especially like early Funkadelic but check out the Mothership Connection live DVD also from the "peak" years.

I read that Buddy Miles played on Comin Round the mountain but I never knew if that were true. However wasn't Buddy supposed to be tite with Eddie? I heard there was supposed to be a tour with Eddie, Buddy and Billy Cox.

Oh yeah and the Mothership Show is fantastic. That's the same show behind the 1977 Live album.

The albums are on CD??? I'll have to hunt them down! The 'best of' that I have is damn tight - almost all the tracks stand out... Funk'n'Bop, Lump, Romeo are some of the funkiest tracks of all time (ok, imo).

If anyones interested... it's called 'How's Your Loose Booty?'

The fold-out liner notes are pretty cool (info/pics) as well.

Yeah, MB does it for me for it's diversity and for it's opener, but that's me. I haven't got that live CD actually! I got the P-Funk Earth Tour and the DVD - Standin' On The Verge... man, how funky do you need to be to dance like that???. I'll have to get that '71 session if it's that tight.

I dont know why but Andre 3000 Draculas Wedding sounds like it could fit on America Eats Its Young to me. Track it right before Miss Lucifers Love. I can see a less sythesised version, he sounds so much like Clinton on the vocals.

These are great collections to your P-Funk list. If you dig Mothership Connection you will love Chocolate City.

Get all the cds it's a education of music within itself.
