That's your friend's band? I remember them from way back, if I'm thinking of the same band that is. Have they been around for a long time?

Yeah - Jaz the singer and Youth the bassist are old friends of mine. I know it sounds naff as all hell, but Jaz and I are like family - it was HE who told me that once, which kinda took me aback! I grew up around him and his family - His mother even taught me at school! Their has always been a close bond between the Coleman family and myself. His mother is still an inspiration, and the whole family are very artistic or succesful at what they do (His brother is a renowned Physist)

Jaz has been concentrating on his orchestral works 4 the past few years, and has not had much time 4 Killing Joke - besides, the 'time was not right'. They always seem 2 do best when the political climate is (how shall I put this...) 'hot'. He is Composer-In-Residence of the Prague Symphony Orchestra when not acting like a man possessed fronting KJ. evillol

Yeah, they've been around since the late seventies! Here are just a SMATTERING of bands that have cited them as an influence:

NIN
Nirvana
Ministry
HelmeT
The CulT
SkinnY PuppY
Metallica
Soundgarden
Foo Fighters (Dave drums throughout the new album)

Last time I saw KJ doin their thing was back in 1993, so i can't wait 2 get my ass on that tour bus 4 a few days! drink headbang
Here's a review of the warm-up gig at the start of the tour a few weeks back:

Killing Joke - Camden Underworld, 14th August 2003

'Intimate' is not a word often associated with a band like Killing Joke. Labels like frightening, loud and scary are typically more likely to be used...certainly in their earshot.

Rammed into Camden Underworld however, a few hundred people (including most of The Darkness and their supermodel girl friends) were priviledged to witness Killing Joke up-close and personal - and given the crush down at the front it was obvious that intimacy levels could be measured in terms of over-inflated tyre pressures. Due to the fact that only 100 tickets had been on sale to the general public (and these had sold out within a few hours) it can only be assumed that tonight was one big guest-list for friends and industry types.

Jaz Colemen held sway for a set that lasted well over an hour and a half - resplendent in a spider fronted black robe that it looked like his mum had made for him to appear in a school play. Topped off with cammoflage-black make-up, the overall effect was calculated to send out the message 'don't f*ck with me, 'cos I really don't care!'

The gig had a party atmosphere (atmosfear?) in the old skool of frenetic moshing. Security guards kept a watchful eye on the front of the crowd, as fan after fan clambered onto the stage to either jump back into the crowd if they were fast enough, or - more likely - to be hurled bodily back from whence they came by a rough shove from Jaz or bassist, Paul Raven (who was recently detained on suspected explosives charges at Heathrow Airport...).

What V2003 will make of Killing Joke this weekend is anybodies guess. Tonight the crowd is a die-hard fan-base, but it's perfectly likely that a lot of V-goers may never have heard of a band who had their heyday over 20 years ago. The set at V might be critical to how they are received. Tonight we had plenty of old tunes from the back-catalogue, but there was - slightly dissapointingly - no sign of Love Like Blood, Eighties or even Kings and Queens. It will be interesting to see if Dave Grohl (who drummed on the latest Killing joke studio album) decides to join the band on stage at V, as the Foo Fighters are on the same day of the bill. If so then there would be a fantastically ironic opportunity to drop Eighties into the set and segue it into a cover of Come As You Are.

But I'm not sure if Killing Joke do irony, so don't hold your breath!

Yeah, I thought it was the same band. biggrin I remember their album covers when I used to go vinyl shopping a long time ago. Some of my friends listened to them, but I never had any of their albums myself.

Thanks for the info. Damn, I wish I could hang out and go to the shows! fit
