August 27, 2003 -- A WORRIED Ed Norton is urging his ex-girlfriend, Courtney Love, to enter rehab.

We hear Norton, who remains friends with his former flame of four years, has been pleading with Love to seek help.

"He's worried about her," says our source. Norton could not be reached yesterday.

In June, Love issued a public apology to Norton and his ex, Salma Hayek, after she told PAGE SIX that Norton would "never marry" the Mexican actress because "he can barely understand what she's saying."

Norton has privately branded Love's comments "absurd" and has become increasingly concerned about Love in the wake of her reliably raucous antics.

The latest gossip about Love has the dynamic diva scaring off an underling she hired to fit her with $18,000 human hair extensions for an appearance on tomorrow's MTV Video Music Awards.

Love, who was supposed to present an MTV2 award with Iggy Pop, is said to have flown into a rage, causing the extension expert to flee Love's Crosby Street co-op where Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravtiz also live. After the follicle furor, Love backed out of her VMA gig.


Love's hard-working publicist dismissed the tale and said she dropped out because of a last-minute injury. "She got a nail stuck in her left foot at a photo shoot for her album, 'America's Sweetheart,' " said the flack. "It's infected, so she won't be presenting."

As for Norton supposedly urging Love to enter rehab, her rep says, "I haven't heard anything about that."

But we can hardly blame Love's friends for wanting her to slow down. Just last week, Love told the NYPD that Virgin Records Senior Vice President Josh Deutsch slapped her in the face - and then denied the alleged assault ever happened the very next day, saying the cops had misunderstood her.

Love also complained to police that her recently fired manager, Dave Lory, was spreading rumors that she smoked crack.

Last February, Love was arrested and held for 12 hours after she cursed a Virgin Airlines flight attendant who refused to let her bring her psychiatric nurse into first class. After apologizing to Virgin tycoon Richard Branson at a party, she was welcomed back to fly on the airline.

I hate this woman! She is a total skank loser. She has no talent, except for sucking dick! I hope she goes away and I never have to see her ugly face again.

She's like a walking John Waters movie, and there's nobody else out there who doesn't give a shit about being seen as a trainwreck. I think her albums are catchy as hell, too - I don't care if she doesn't write or play a lick on 'em, I still enjoy the music.

The world would be far less interesting a place without this incredible harpy shrew stumbling through it. Lighten up and have a laugh - being a complete mess of a bitch is her schtick, and she's damn good at it.
