Pop Classic of the Day: "She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby (1983)

It's tempting to dismiss this track as just another gimmicky,hook-laden,New Wave novelty song, but it's so much more than that.Thomas Dolby is a synthesizer wizard, creating complex and interesting sounds on his 1982 masterpiece 'The Golden Age of Wireless',which features this monster hit single."She Blinded Me With Science" is undeniably funky and R&B radio quickly embraced this song.In early 1983,this electronic jam was hard to resist.

"She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby

(written by Thomas Dolby)

It's poetry in motion
She turned her tender eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
mmm...but she blinded me with science
and failed me in biology

When I'm dancing close to her
"Blinding me with science-science!"
I can smell the chemicals
"Blinding me with science-science!"
"Science!"
"Science!"

Mmm...but it's poetry in motion
And when she turned her eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
Mmm...but she blinded me with science
("she blinded me with science!")
And failed me in geometry

When she's dancing next to me
"Blinding me with science--science!"
I can hear machinery
"Blinding me with science--science!"
"Science!"

It's poetry in motion
And now she's making love to me
The spheres are in commotion
The elements in harmony
She blinded me with science
"she blinded me with science!"
And hit me with technology

"Good heavens,Miss Sakamoto...you're beautiful!"

I don't believe it
There she goes again
She's tidied up
And I can't find anything
All my tubes and wires
and careful notes
and antiquated notions

But!...it's poetry in motion
and when she turned her eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
mmm...but she blinded me with science
"she blinded me with science!"
she blinded me with...

20 years later, I still dig this song. I always thought this cut was too funky.

I once saw a VH-1 special where they listed Thomas Dolby as a one-hit wonder.Such a shame he never really had any other hits after this.

This used to be the jam back in 1983!!! Got plenty of airplay on pop and R&B radio. Hey, keep bringing those great 1983 songs. I thought the video was funny for this track as well.

Thomas Dolby is still making music. Good music too. He is a great artist that was overlooked because of this song. He hit it big and nobody thought too much of him afterwards while he was making fantastic music. too bad.

Gary Numan is in the same boat. hit it big with "Cars" and fell off the face of the earth. he is still making good stuff today though. a little "goth-y" but still good.

I love Thomas, "The Golden age of wireless" "the flat earth" "aliens ate my buick" "Astronauts and Heritics" are all classics in my book. He has a new album out that you can get from his website, I haven't heard it yet but I'm sure he's still making good music.

you dont remember Thomas Dolby's album "Aliens ate my buick"?? with Budapest by Blimp and airhead on it?... that album kicked ass.. and then before that album there was "Hyperactive" which was a hit, Thomas was also responsible for 2 of Whodini's classic singles " Magic's wand, and the Haunted house of rock"

I was at a restaurant in the village called The Gallery, and they played that song at least 5 times while I was there. Since then it makes me sick to my stomach. I never wanna hear it again.

P.S. Gee thanks, now I have that song stuck in my head. mad

Another one of my favorite New Wave tracks. He had some other cool tracks like "Hyperactive" & "Airhead". But this one is Mr. Dolby in his prime. Thanks for shouting this one out, DavidEye.

Hey, does anyone remember Thomas' role as the villain in this horror/music/comedy called "Rockula"?

see, when folks dog the 80s because of the synthesizer use, they forget about the genius of thomas dolby.

I know what you mean, Moonbeam. The 80's had the best of both worlds, imo. Synths/electronic sounds and "real instruments". I LOVE hearing guitar and sax with synths. It's so magical, like bringing two worlds together. The ethereal and the physical.
