70s Disco Music----Did it REALLY suck?

I've never understood why so many people were saying "Disco sucks" in the late 70s.Like any other musical form, there were good songs and bad songs, but I was a HUGE fan of that music.Disco music was fun, energetic and highly intoxicating...lol...have a few Long Island Iced teas and you could get lost in this music:)

What are yor thoughts on this music? What are your favorite Disco songs? And why did so many people hate Disco?

Hey Calhoun, wasssuuppp???!!! All we need is Christopher and it will be just like old times...lol...

I forgot all about Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"! Disco was SO HOT in the late 70s that many rock/pop artists were jumping on the bandwagon.Consider...

***"Miss You"The Rolling Stones(1978)---This song has a Disco beat, and was popular in the Discos back then.Who would have thought that one of the world's biggest ROCK bands would do a Disco song?

***"Don't Say Goodnight"Paul McCartney and Wings(1979)---Another song that jumps on the Disco bandwagon,by an artist not usually associated with that music.

***"The Main Event/Fight"Barbara Streistand(1978)---For the theme song to her 1978 movie of the same name, she called up one of Donna Summer's songwriters (Paul JaBara) and had her own hot Disco hit.

***"Shine A Little Love"ELO(1979)---Sounds like a Bee Gees outtake...lol...

Hey, is the Stones' Emotional Rescue considered disco? Its tone smacks of disco IMO, but I'm not a music scholar like you! wink

Remember when the Bee Gees came out with their 1979 'Spirits Having Flown' album? This was their big follow-up to 'Saturday Night Fever' (let's forget their 1978 flop movie 'Sgt.Peppers'...lol).Did you like the songs "Tragedy" and "Too Much Heaven"?

The song "Emotional Rescue" sounds alot like "Miss You".It's in the same vein, but I think most rock music experts would kill us for calling it "Disco"...lol...

The "54" soundtrack (Volumes 1 and 2) is excellent because it contains alot of rare Disco songs that you don't find on other compilations.Songs like "Haven't Stop Dancing Yet" by Gonzalez(1978),"Lovin Is Really My Game" by Brainstorm(1977) and "Que Sera Mi Vida"(1979) are extremely rare and hard-to-find songs. But don't worry, the popular songs are there too ("Chic's "Dance Dance Dance",GQ's "Disco Nights",etc).

Rock And Roll Rebels gave ROD The Mob a hard time for doing that song. It was a great song. I remember seeing the album cover for BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN. Rod seems like he was really enjoying the sex symbol status. Of course it paid off commercially, "Do You Think I'm Sexy" went to number #1 on the Billboard charts and crossed over on R&B radio.

A few more disco songs...

***Issac Hayes-Don't Let Go...Ike merged disco with a little funk...the bridge on this song was TERRFYING. Great song.

***Gene Chandler- Get Down...Huge disco song for this soul singer. You may have forgotten about this one. Gene Chandler had a huge soul hit with "Rainbow". This song used to be the jam. Radio stations here in Atlanta used to play this one a lot.

***Jerry Butler-Coolin Out..."The Ice Man" (no not George Gervin...LOL). This soul veterean singer had a big disco dance hit with the Gamble And Huff produced song in the mid-70's on the Philadelphia International Records label

nothing about disco sucked.

at the time though there was a backlash from middle america and as far as i can tell it was to do with the sexual freedom and drugs etc. that (for them) disco symbolised.

also it was predominantly black music and a lot of white rock fans saw it as a threat to them and their culture (or lack of it)and hence the big stadium burnings of disco records.

looking back though it was one of the most creative times in fashion and music.

Yeah exactly, this "disco sucks" movement was nothing but racist & anti-gay.
Disco was a sort of Funk, and it was great until it get so watered, and that even white rockers get into it biggrin
Brass Construction was one of the best Funk/Pre-Disco band to me.

there were many reasons why there was a large "disco sucks" movement. all of the reasons above were a part of it. the music was considered "gay or black" which didn't sit well with a lot of folks. but, also, as with many trends in music it kind of ran its course. virtually all trends in music eventually become "un-cool" at some point. part of the reason also was that it was a producer run genre rather than an artist run genre. it is similar to the backlash that n'sync/backstreet boys/britney spears type stuff suffer from.a lot of the artists that had hits didn't write the songs or play instruments. there were few bands with "real musicians" to follow and watch develop, mainly a lot of "faceless studio musicians". of course, not all the artists were like that, but a considerable portion were and that became the stereotype.

A little trivia about Disco...

***In 1979,Patrick Hernandez had a huge Disco hit with the song "Born To Be Alive".When he went to France for a few concert dates, one of his bacup singers was a young, unknown vocalist named MADONNA LOUISE CICCONE.Yes,that Madonna!

***In early 1977,Donna Summer released the single "Can't We Just Sit Down (And Talk It Over)".It received a little attention at Black radio, but it never became a big hit.But soon, radio DJs flipped the record over and played it's B-Side,the pulsing,techno-styled "I Feel Love".That song became a Top 10 smash.

***In early 1979,singer Gloria Gaynor released a new single called "Substitute".The song bombed, but soon DJs became playing it's B-side "I Will Survive".The rest is history.

***The 1979 hit "Ring My Bell" was recorded by Anita Ward, but the song was originally intended for young vocalist Stacy Lattisaw. The song was considered a little too risque for a pre-teen to sing,so it was given to Ward.

***The 1979 Chic song "I Want Your Love" was originally given to Sister Sledge.Chic wisely recorded their own version and sailed into the Top 10 with it.The Sledge sisters finally recorded their own version several years ago.

***Speaking of Chic,on their debut 1977 hit "Dance,Dance,Dance",listen closely to the person that yells "Yowsah!Yowsah!Yowsah!".That is Luther Vandross! He also appeared on several other Chic records.

***In 1976,singer Andrea True scored a huge Disco hit with the suggestive "More,More,More".In the song, she demands that her lover "get the cameras rolling, get the action going".She is referring to her previous career as a porn star!...lol...

KANO's big dance hit Holly Dolly (Are You Ready??) released in 1980 sounds just like Patrick Hernandez song "Born To Be ALive". But to me their song was better. Dance floor classic. Tag Team sampled their song for their hit "Whoop... There It Is" in 1993.
