David Bowie SOUND+VISION 4cd tracklisting From bowienet:
EMI have confirmed the tracklisting for the revamped Sound+Vision 4 CD box set that we told you about last month. Originally released in the US only, but heavily exported around the globe, the set has been updated with another one and a half discs of extra tracks, that's 24 extra in total. The extra tracks start from track 10 on disc three, which is Baal's Hymn from the Baal EP. All of the tracks are the most recent digitally-remastered versions, meaning that most (if not all) of those that appeared on the original set have been updated for this release. The extra tracks on this new version bring the set up to the release of Buddha Of Suburbia. This is the first official CD release for the following tracks, and a couple of them have not been released at any time before: The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud (rare B-side Paul Buckmaster intro version 1969) London Bye Ta-Ta (previously unreleased stereo version recorded 1970) Round And Round (Alt version from Ziggy sessions 1971) Baal's Hymn (from Baal E.P.) Drowned Girl (from Baal E.P.) Nite Flights (Moodswings Remix - Unreleased 7" Radio edit) Pallas Athena (Gone Midnight Mix) Anyway, the set is due in late October/early November and here's the tracklisting as it stands, subject to 3rd party clearance on some tracks: CD 1: 01 Space Oddity (original demo 1969) (5:07) 02 The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud (rare B-side Paul Buckmaster intro version 1969) (4:48 03 The Prettiest Star (single version 1970) (3:09) 04 London Bye Ta-Ta (previously unreleased stereo version recorded 1970) (2:33) 05 Black Country Rock (from The Man Who Sold The World) (3:34) 06 The Man Who Sold The World (from The Man Who Sold The World) (3:54) 07 The Bewlay Brothers (from Hunky Dory) (5:20) 08 Changes (from Hunky Dory) (3:33) 09 Round And Round (Alt version from Ziggy sessions 1971) (2:39) 10 Moonage Daydream (from The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars) (4:37) 11 John, I'm Only Dancing (Sax Version 1973) (2:55) 12 Drive-In Saturday (from Aladdin Sane 1973) (4:27) 13 Panic In Detroit (from Aladdin Sane 1973) (4:23) 14 Ziggy Stardust (live from Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture 1973) (3:14) 15 White Light/White Heat (live from Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture 1973) (3:14) 16 Rock 'N' Roll Suicide (live from Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture 1973) (4:29) 17 Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere (from Pinups 1973) (3:06) 18 Sorrow (from Pinups 1973) (2:53) 19 Don't Bring Me Down (from Pinups 1973) (2:05) CD 2: 01 1984/Dodo (recorded 1973) (5:27) 02 Big Brother (from Diamond Dogs 1974) (3:18 03 Rebel Rebel (US single version 1974) (2:58 04 Suffragette City (from David Live 1974) (3:48 05 Watch That Man (from David Live 1974) (5:05) 06 Cracked Actor (from David Live 1974) (3:28 07 Young Americans (from Young Americans 1975) (5:10) 08 Fascination (from Young Americans 1975) (5:43) 09 After Today (Young Americans outtake 1975) (3:47) 10 It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City (recorded 1975) (3:46) 11 TVC15 (from Station To Station 1976) (5:29) 12 Wild Is The Wind (from Station To Station 1976) (5:56) 13 Sound And Vision (from Low 1977) (3:02) 14 Be My Wife (from Low 1977) (2:55) 15 Speed Of Life (from Low 1977) (2:45) 16 Helden (German version of Heroes - 1989 remix) (3:37) 17 Joe The Lion (from Heroes 1977) (3:05) 18 Sons Of The Silent Age (from Heroes 1977) (3:17) CD 3: 01 Station To Station (from Stage 1978) (8:48 02 Warszawa (from Stage 1978) (6:50) 03 Breaking Glass (from Stage 1978) (3:34) 04 Red Sails (from Lodger 1979) (3:42) 05 Look Back In Anger (from Lodger 1979) (3:05) 06 Boys Keep Swinging (from Lodger 1979) (3:16) 07 Up The Hill Backwards (from Scary Monsters 1980) (3:13) 08 Kingdom Come (from Scary Monsters 1980) (3:42) 09 Ashes To Ashes (from Scary Monsters 1980) (4:22) 10 Baal's Hymn (from Baal E.P.) For real. Why do we need album tracks again? I'm sure I'll buy it anyway. This just about sums up the bowie fans' sentiments: BOLLOCKS!!! This is TERRIBLE news. OK so they want to keep the original "integrity" of the 1989 box track-list, so I can sort of understand why Dudes stereo or Conversation Piece have not been squeezed in to CD1, for instance. But they've fucked up the "integrity" of the original box anyway by pushing the Pin Ups tracks on to CD1, Low tracks on to CD2 etc... AND they also fuck up the "integrity" by substituting the original box versions of Freecloud and Round + Round and Ta Ta with alternate mixes. Make no mistake, I applaud the idea of the latter, but then it pisses me off greatly when they don't subtitute John (sax version from AS 2CD) for John (B-side remix), which is currently unavailable. Or Bewlay Bros could have been subtituted for the alternate mix that was on 1990's Hunky Dory, released outside USA by EMI. Hello?! I do hope this 'stereo' version of Ta ta is not someone's idea of what the track should sound like in the 21st century. The 'original Bolan Stereo Version' of Prettiest Star on the Best Of 69/74 was exactly that. A contemporary remix that was not true to the original recording at all. Come to think of it, I wonder if they'll use that on this box too? It doesn't look like it. Does that mean it's back to Mono then?! Stranger, didn't you (or someone) say that the take of Round & Round on last years Ziggy 2CD was different from the 89/90 CD version. So how many versions are there now then? Though it's a good idea, I don't think 5 extra seconds of a spoken intro preceeding the B-side acoustic version of Freecloud (from a Dutch single, I believe) is something to get TOO excited about! I notice that the timing of White Light live is over a minute shorter than on the original box (4:27), for some strange reason. Puzzling! Overall, so much more could have been done with CD1. At a running time of approx 67 mins there is room for MORE. Why not put the 3 Dogs tracks on there too? This would be freeing up space later on for the rest of the Baal EP, Space Oddity '79, Alabama Song etc... CD2: running to 72 mins this is also a great disappointment. If they'd put the three Dogs tracks on to the end of CD1 then they would have been able to put the three Stage tracks on to the end of this disc, freeing up even more space later on. I quite like the idea of a CD that starts with David Live and ends with Stage. They could have also quite easily replaced Joe The Lion with the 1991 remix that was a bonus track on Heroes. Oh, those were the days. CD3: Right then. The original box ended at Ashes, now track 9 of this new third disc. So that means they're able to put whatever tracks on after that, as long as they're chronological, of course. I warmly welcome the Cat People 12" but if they'd used the first two disc's capacity to it's limit of 80 mins, they could have freed up space on this disc. It would have been so so lovely to have ALL five tracks together in one place, for their well overdue CD baptism!! They only add up to 2 and a half minutes total, for chrissakes! What other release could the remaining three go on? Nice to get Modern live, but why not the remix B-side Shake It too? That's now the one Let's Dance era track never issued on CD. CD4 is just plain embarrasing! TWO versions of Pallas Athena, one is a 1993 remix (which isn't even confirmed as being on the box) and one is a 1997 'live' version. The other Tao Jones track issued on that limited 12", V2 Schneider, is actually the one that's never been issued on CD, but is it here? Of course not. I've just checked my BOB and discover that they've included Labyrinth in the list of DB albums they're plugging. So why not include the Underground 7", for instance, on this box? I can see that with this project the Bowie and EMI camp mainly want to highlight some key tracks from each of the 1969-1993 albums, but would it really hurt if , say, Amlapura was replaced by (the deleted B-side) Amlapura (Indnonesian Version)? Of course it wouldn't. The credit would read 'Original version on the album Tin Machine II. So the album still gets a plug and a push. They don't put themselves out much , do they? I should also note that (as it was sadly missing from any of the BOB CDs around the world) they missed a great chance to put the far superior Buddha 7" mix on here, instead of the bog-standard album version. Again, the credit would say something like 'Original version on the album Buddha Of Suburbia, to be issued by EMI in November (or something)' Without the two TBC BTWN era mixes, the running time of CD4 is a shockingly rip off 64 minutes. Where's the great Julie, Girls, Pretty Pink Rose, Look Back In Anger 88, When The Wind Blows, Absolute Beginners full length version, or the 7" versions of You Belong In Rock and Roll and Baby Universal? The above few are all very worthwhile additions to the Bowie catalog. Their only crime seems to be that they're not featured on a Bowie studio album. But stupid EMI could even plug the BOB, by an A Beginners credit saying '7" version on The Best Of Bowie...' or whatever. And You Belong or Baby U would say 'original version on TM II' of course. All it needs is a little imagination. And if they're trying to palm us off with remixes on this last disc then why overlook the great JAE mix of Jump, which was on the original BTWN album, after all. Another track on that original album has also been forgotten. I notice that the excellent Dont Stop Praying Mix No.1 of Pallas has been left off this and the BTWN 3-disc set coming soon. I can see this as an excellent opportunity for casual buyers who want a thorough round up of Bowie's work, to sit along with BOB, or may be be purchased instead of BOB, but Bowie has a VERY sizable fanbase, who al have the box set from 1989 already. By only offering a couple of alternate mixes, a couple of EP tracks never issued on CD before and (possibly) a couple of unreleased remixes from the BTWN period (not a period to get too excited about in the first place), this really is a missed opportunity to guarantee healthy sales from that corner of the market too. What a shame. | |
