Neo Soul rant I don't know about the rest of you, but in my view i find "neo soul" to be really boring now, with the exception of maybe Floetry and Alicia Keys.. it seems like they use the same tired beats over and over and the lyrics are just unimaginative , i've never been able to get through a whole album of it because it feels like i just heard the same song. anybody else ever get that feeling??

Like with anything it depends on who the artist is. I didn't dig Voodoo or much of the floetry album but really like Remy Shand, Raphael's Instant Vintage. Much of TRC has a neo-soul vibe as well and I like most of those songs. Just think it's a bit harsh to lump all these records together. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

the only reason i lump it together is cause they sound the same. they dress alike, date each other collaborate with each other use the same rhythms.. so why not?

I think you're getting caught up in the label "neo-soul". As others have said, it's really just a word for soul music made today. I really don't think it all sounds a like any more than all soul 20 years ago sounded the same. I don't think Remy Shand sounds like D'Angelo or Maxwell sounds like Saadiq. Ok the fact you said "alicia keys" in the same sentence as Floetry says that you have really dug into the soul music that's out there. Remy Shand, Thicke, Raphael Saadiq, Donnie (thanks to groovement), even vivan greene's cd is good. Throw out Alicia...

I love the fact that these soul artists are coming with the real instruments/voices, ORGANIC SOUL ,thats what it is. OOOH! "Organic Soul". I'm really feeling that! I wasn't all that bothered by the neo-soul moniker, though, 'cause I just felt that it was one of those "for-lack-of-a-better-word" situations- you know, kinda like how in America we don't have "classical" architecture cause we're not old enough, but we have a lot of neo-classical architecture (like in DC)- but Organic Soul! That's working for me (at least today it is! you know quixotic folks can be). You're dead on, tats! Thanks for that. I've always used the word organic when I discuss music with artist friends, but I'm ready to start peppering my speech with the "organic soul" thing- it feels so RIGHT.

I, personally, will always categorize the artists mentioned as Neo-Soul. To me, while many of the artists mentioned are very talented, none really fit into the classic soul genre. What they are all doing is making music that harkens back to the true days of soul music, by mixing the strong influences of the great soul artists of the 70's/80's, with other "black music" genres (jazz, funk & r&b to name a few).
To me, true soul music, died the day Marvin did, and no offense but, NONE of those artists can carry Mr. Gaye's jock, much less revive a genre filled with the greatest of the greats in black music history. That said... The term "Neo-Soul" is truly a compliment to these artists as it ties them to the greatness of the past, but emphasizes the contemporary nature of their work, and bonds them as the new class of true musical talent. They truly are talented, hence the association with the past, with emphasis on the NEW. BTW, Groovement..... I've always seen P as a Pop/funk artist way before I see him a soul artist. While he does have many fab soul songs, overall, he's truly a funk based artist who occasionally dabbles in soul/r&b. (Guess it don't really matter, he's great at all of em anyway) But, to compare them to P????? You tryin to get your card pulled or somethin bro????? How many freakin' times do I have 2 repeat myself?
Please listen 2 the following artist who may appear 2 be neo soul, Raphel Saadiq. Angie Stone. D'angelo, Alicia Keys, Maxwell, Amel Luriex, Jagur Wright, Me'shell ndegleochello and the new comer Novel... If you listen 2 these albums over and over again, please listen to it again and tell me you don't hear Prince. I ain't the type of person to think that Prince created R&B, because I know better then that, but something is seriously seriously seriously wrong with you, if you don't hear the influence in neo soul music. I hate using the term neo soul, but I will bare with you all 4 one second who don't seem 2 understand. Now I do believe I watched this program on television that basically went over the whole neo soul movement during the 90's. Which they say started with D'angelo... But uhmmm, if I ain't mistaken who do D'angelo sound like? Brown Sugar most definetly ain't original, if I ain't mistaken I swear I heard Prince singing in the breakground I could be wrong though and If y'all didn't know, Angie stone wrote most of D'aneglo songs on the first record, which it is clear 2 me Angie Stone was inspired by non other then ... yeah u guessed Prince.. Nowadays ?uestionlove produces much of the neosoul tracks. ?uestionlove is a big prince fan and I think he worked with Prince before. I think that it's a damn shame Prince sound has been recyled so much, some of y'all can't even recognize it when you hear it. I curse the person who said "Even TRC has the neo soul sound in it" Are you really serious, did I just hear that from someone who's a prince fan? Now it's either alot of u r fairly new Prince fans or just kinda young if you can't see or understand, neo soul ain't nothing new and that Prince basically laid down the foundation for it, even though they don't wanna give the brotha the credit... come on now where is the real music fans??? damn shame I mean , Hello Did Alicia Keys remake How come u don't call me anymore or not? Lisa, I agree with you that 98% of the so called "neo-soul" artists have major P influences, and most bite his style far too much. I just don't think P is a fundamentally "soul" artist (even though he's outstanding at it). ______________________________________
