The Delfonics,Stylistics,Blue Magic,Chi-Lites,Dramatics.

What do you think of those early 70s R&B vocal groups like The Delfonics,The Stylistics,Blue Magic,The Chi-Lites,The Dramatics,The Manhattans and others? Ocassionally,I see many of these groups in concert on those "Super Oldies" concerts, which are popular in my area.

There is a Prince connection here.In 1996,Prince remade the Stylistics' hit "Betcha By Wolly Wow" and the Delfonics' hit "La La Means I Love You".Which groups and songs were your favorites?

Some of my favorite Stylistics songs are their lesser-known songs like "People Make The World Go' Round","Children Of The Night" and their cover of Carole King's "It's Too Late".I also love their first real hit,1971's "Stop Look Listen (To Your Heart)".

As for the Delfonics? I LOVE their entire Greatest Hits CD...lol...

I know most of them performed on the PBS special "Rhythm & Soul" (they air it like every other day). It's really good, though. Blue Magic performed "Sideshow" and it's always good to see Big Re Re bringing down the house! lol

"Shoe Shoe Shine" by the Dynamic Superiors (1974) smile

I have an old Soul Train video from 1974 and these guys are there performing this song. The lead singer was openly gay and on this show,he is wearing eyeliner and make-up,and his mannerisms are feminine. In the 80s,this became the norm but back in '74,I bet it raised more than a few eyebrows...lol

Hell yeah! That's my favorite Stylistics song. The melody is amazing and you gotta love the heavenly vocals.

In 1981,both Patti Austin and Angela Boffill released competing cover versions. After all this time,I'm still trying to figure out which cover version is superior.

OMG! I was going to ask if you saw their Soul Train performance!!! I actually remember their appearance! omfg (I'm pretty certain this happened on ST.) There's a part in their dance routine when the members join hands and make a swing on which the "gay" guy sits and sings and they swing his happy ass back and forth. I was a kid back then, but funny how some images just stay with you.

Yes,that is their infamous Soul Train performance!! That part happens during the instrumental break in the song, where you hear the wedding bells.
