I can't chose but for the innovation I'd say that New Order is the first, Depeche Mode is the second - when Blue Monday was released, in 1983 I think, Depeche Mode's songs, at some exceptions, were not as good as they became later imo

I can't really compare the three because I like them all, and to me they are all very different. And "important" in what way?

they are all incredibly different and have had their own unique effect on music. though my favorite out of the three would have to be the smiths.

Wow- what a question! I love all 3 bands thoroughly. My favorite is Depeche Mode. As for most important- hmmm...probably New Order.

Well, they all have their place.

I'd say New Order was the most important in terms of changing the sound of music at the time. They're arguably the most influential electronic band ever. The Smiths were important in their statements and bringing a real band sound to the forefront when most of what was out was very new wave and pop. They might be the most important indie band ever. And Depeche Mode were probably the most popular of the 3. They had the most impact on the mainstream. But if you ask me, I say that Joy Division and The Cure are more important to modern rock than all of them. It all stems from there.

To answer your question (now that you have rephrased it for me), I can't really say which band will be listened to more in 50 years time. I have no way of predicting what people will still be listening to. As for myself, I like all three, so I will probably still be listening to all of them, but most likely Depeche Mode and the Smiths, more so than New Order.

Just a suggestion, but next time you start a thread, don't get all pissy on someone who is just asking you to elaborate on the question you pose. Why else would you start a thread if not to get feedback and opinions from everyone?
