New Led Zeppelin DVD

Has anyone else seen this yet? I bought it yesterday...it is the best DVD I have seen so far this year. Classic concerts from 69 to 73...really shows this awesome band at the top of their game. If you are into Zep you NEED to get this...The new live CD "How the West was Won" is kick ass too...blows The Song Remains the Same out of the water.

peace

i've got how the west was won, an yes, it is really great. and, yes it is far superior to the song remains the same. i haven't got the dvd because i don't yet have a dvd player. i may get it anyway, because i'm sure at some point i will upgrade to dvd.

anyway, kudos to jimmy page for finally getting around to releasing something like this. i had given up on ever seeing stuff like this. i had read an interview with him where he said he wouldn't ever release any of these old concerts because they've been bootlegged to death. i'm glad he changed his mind.

Im still waiting for mine.I foolishly pre-ordered it and now it's been delayed with the holiday.I picked up the CD tho and really enjoy it for the most part.

I'm just curious about something tho:

What is it about TSRTS that people dont like? The film was pretty innovative for it's time and I've always enjoyed the performances. It has always had bad reviews tho and most fans dont seem to care much for it.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

IMO - The die-hard fans are the people you refer to. The concert was filmed over several nights and they chopped-up pieces for the movie. Then throw in the dream sequences and you've disappointed people.

I've never thought it was too bad until I got the bootlegs. A Led Zep concert (most of the time, not all of the time) was just an amazing experience because they were operating at another level and people felt it.

The Song Remains the Same didn't capture it.

To the point of the thread; I picked up the cd and it's cleaner than the bootlegs. I realized when I was listening to this that the general public has never heard it. It's amazing.

This weekend, the DVD headbang

I don't think it would take much for true to form
live Zep concert to outdo TSRTS. biggrin Even I, as a
hardcore Zep fan, don't think it has much redeeming
value, and if I were trying to hip somebody to the
world of Zeppelin it would be a mistake to introduce
them to that one.

I have yet to get the new stuff.

i never disliked the song remains the same. i has its flaws, and as others have said, they have do with a lot of the editing decisions.

its just that how the west was won is a much better document.

I really liked TSRTS before I heard a bootleg from that same tour. Its kinda like Prince and the ONA shows. The released version is ok, but the boots really document the greatness of those concerts much better.

"The Song Remains the Same" aint shit. Even the band doesn't like it. BAd performance, bad sound and crappy, pretentious 'interludes' kill the whole flick and do nothing to solidify the reputation, talent and raw power fo this band. God bless Jimmy Page for doing justice to the live Zeppelin legacy. The DVD is NICE. A little spotty (especially the first disc) but VERY slammin in many, many spots. I have a new appreciation for John Bonham having watched this. More and more, he seems like the glue that held the Zeppelin sound together.

"Trampled Under Foot", "Achilles Last Stand" and the acoustic set are highlights. It's interesting watching the band grow, since the discs span roughly nine years of development. By the last concert, Jimmy Page is SO tweaked out on coke it's almost sad to watch, and you can begin to sense the fatigue and burnout that were setting in with the band.

Wonderful set overall. A must-own for any fan.

If you don't like Led Zeppelin, you don't like rock n' roll.

Herb-
Well said and an excellant review. Couldn't have said it better myself. The point about a new appreciation for Bonham is an understatement. A new appreciation for Led Zeppelin is how this affected me.

From a musician's point of view, this dvd shows what a good band is. Period. If you sing, watch this. If you play guitar, watch this. If you play drums, again, watch this. Bass players especially pay attention.

Just saw it and had to post here.

Sorry Jimipaisley, just picked it up for $17 at Bestbuy. sad

it's funny. i remember a number of interviews with robert plant in the early 80's when asked about groups that were touted as "the new zeppelins" and his reply was that the thing that set zeppelin apart was bonham. he would say that those groups could find guitarists that could wail, singers that could cry the blues, but they could never find a drummer that could hang with bonham.
