Hypothetical American Idol

Imagine that the following singers have not yet reached superstardom. It's down to the final 3 contestants. (Ashanti, was voted off weeks ago, and Justin Timberlake got the boot last week.)

Who will be the "American Idol?":

1) Luther Vandross
2) Teena Marie
3) Whitney Houston

Whitney. Although the three can blow, it boils down to looks in this world.

Even though everyone would think Luther should win, Teena will win for marketing reasons

Whitney w/o a doubt... it would come down to Teena & Whitney. Her voice is unstopable... unless Bobby's in the room w/ some crack :O

I'm going to have to go with Teena Marie. Though all three contestants would've made the finals. (sorry not sure how that show actually works ) I'd say Teena has a better stage presence, and would tear that stage up! From what I've seen, Whitney and Luther would just stand there and sweat a lot.

Teena gets it for Industry Politics.if a White Artist has strong R&B Roots&Can pull it off then you are "IN".but Politics aside Whitney Houston would win.

What complicates the choices is that Luther and Whitney have gone through changes. Would we be voting on the overweight Luther or the slimmed down Luther? Luther has never really crossed over to the pop music fans, so his appeal as an "American Idol" is limited.

And with Whitney, would we be voting on the fresh, young Whitney with the powerful voice, or would we be voting on the crack-wasted skinny, sweating Whitney?

In the end, between the three choices, Teena Marie would be more acceptable and easier to market to middle America.

I thought this was about personal choices and not who 'middle america' would pick.

The questions asks: "Who will be the American Idol?" among those 3 choices.

Luther. Going off just one or two songs, Whitney, but in a week after week performance LUTHER. Anyone who's been to his shows knows that his vocals are FLAWLESS live. Teena would win, though. Politics. White girl + soulful voice = winner in Amerikkka.

Are you talking about young Rick James trained Teena Marie or middle-aged slightly overweight signed with rappers Teena Marie?

No disrespect to Lady T. I love all three of them musically. They are "winners" in their own right individually. And that's the TRUTH.

I was talking about the young Teena Marie. I don't think the young Whitney would have made it because I don't think her voice would withstand the vigors of the live singing competition.

The young Luther wouldn't have won it because he doesn't fit the image of what middle America wants to see in an American Idol.
