Which Maxwell album do you prefer?

He has 4 albums out, pick ure favorite and why.

I dig Embrya, Its by far his smoothest set of songs. (I dig Urban Hange Suite also) but Embrya from start to finish is a really impressive album

I thought Now was a huge disappointment, though a couple of the tracks were magnificent. Embrya took a lot of getting used to, but it's a fine piece of work. My favorite still is Urban Hang Suite, and unfortunately, that's unlikely to change.

Urban Hang Suite. I can listen to it from beginning to end. Not a bad song on there.

100% agreed, Now to me wasnt his best by far, I guess I was used to his "concepts" on his albums.. they all just seemed to flow 2gether, that one didnt at all, and most importantly the music wasnt his standards in my opinion..

I like Embrya the most. It has a whole own atmosphere.
Urban is a very close second.

Like jtgillia said, Now was a bit of a let down. There
are incredibly cool songs on it but the over all album
puts me to sleep.

AGREED nod I just hope the last sentence turns out to be untrue - I'm hoping he'll find his way to another cut-for-cut album smile

I still play Urban Hang Suite alot. Including the magnificent cd-singles with all of them extended versions (re-recorded extended palys; loverly)

But Embrya has been getting alot of play lately, because Fhinkin knows how to make me listen to music.

Isn't it nice; meeting people who you share a passion with and then learn to look at something you took for granted and see it in a different light?

Fhinkin is indeed a funny typo. Hehehe.

And okay. My thoughts on Embrya is that with UHS he made music for the hips and with Embrya he made music for the soul.
I love them both but in different ways. I prefer to swing my hips lately, as my soul is already burdened with too much thoughts anyway.

I dig all 3 of his studio albums equally. I hear over and over how "Now" was such a disappointment. The only thing disappointing about that album to me is it has too few tracks. Noone, Changed and Lifetime are as good as anything Maxwell has ever recorded. "Get To Know Ya" was a decent song as well. UHS will always be a special album because it was his debut (And one of the best ever debuts IMO) With "Sumthin Sumthin" "Ascension" and the title track it reminds me a lot of "Now" actually. It's a strong album based on 4-5 strong songs. "Embrya" actually is his best all the way through but doesn't doesn't have as many standout songs as his other two albums. I remember people bitching about how Embrya was a disappointment when it came out. I can respect other people's opinions but I will still never understand how a Maxwell fan would not like "Now" or "Embrya". I'll take as much Maxwell music as I can get music

Urban Hang Suite is his most impressive in my opinion. Embrya is very good but just doesn't capture that "mellosmoothe" essence he conveys. Now WAS very dissappointing and that may be because there weren't enough songs. Overall, that LP just sounds unfinished to me. Considering he had such a kick ass group of musicians, musically it didn't strike a chord with me. I think Protools ruined the LP personally.

Embrya. Strange album and song titles, but very funky soulful.

I prefer the unplugged album. The last couple of notes he sings on "Whenever, wherever, whatever"...OH MY GOD!!! If my man could sing like that...no matter what he did, I would forgive him.

I'm impartial to UHS because it was a concept album, like reading a novel, yet you can pull it apart and play it out of order. I listen to that one constantly. Embrya took some getting used to, but I called it his "experimental" phase and grew to like it on it's on merit. Now is actually a close 2nd to UHS. Grant it's not conceptual in that it flows like the first one, but I've been playing it often and there are great dance tracks like "At the Party" and "Get to Know Ya," and slower tempo songs like "For Lovers Only," and "Changed." I think peeps should give it another listen or two. Putting out a classic first album is easier for these artists cuz they've spent years working on it, and then they are practically forced to relase a 2nd one in less than 2 years of the first release. Sometime it takes a 4th or 5th for them to come back to what we deem as their best work. As listeners we should expect quality, but just not on the same level as the first. Personally Maxwell hasn't failed me as a fan. If anything he makes it up with his stage performances.

i've really enjoyed all of his albums. i think embrya is my favorite, though. i like now a lot also. they've all got very different personalities so it is hard for me to pick one over another. the stuff on the unplugged set is amazing, as are all his live performances.
