which is the most important band: Depeche Mode, New Order or The Smiths?

I can't chose but for the innovation I'd say that New Order is the first, Depeche Mode is the second - when Blue Monday was released, in 1983 I think, Depeche Mode's songs, at some exceptions, were not as good as they became later imo

I can't really compare the three because I like them all, and to me they are all very different. And "important" in what way?

they are all incredibly different and have had their own unique effect on music. though my favorite out of the three would have to be the smiths.

Wow- what a question! I love all 3 bands thoroughly. My favorite is Depeche Mode. As for most important- hmmm...probably New Order.

I'm serious. I just asked you to clarify what you mean by important. Important meaning how big they became, how many record sales they had, what impact they made in that genre, etc.? It's just a question.

sorry as you want music, lyrics (is Morrissey really a better lyricist than Martin Gore?), innovation, the importance in pop history, which band will be listened the most in 50 years from now according to you?

Well, they all have their place.

I'd say New Order was the most important in terms of changing the sound of music at the time. They're arguably the most influential electronic band ever. The Smiths were important in their statements and bringing a real band sound to the forefront when most of what was out was very new wave and pop. They might be the most important indie band ever. And Depeche Mode were probably the most popular of the 3. They had the most impact on the mainstream. But if you ask me, I say that Joy Division and The Cure are more important to modern rock than all of them. It all stems from there.

I don't know why you seem to have a problem with my initial post, and you did start the thread, so I replied and asked a question. But you just had to throw in the eye-roll.

To answer your question (now that you have rephrased it for me), I can't really say which band will be listened to more in 50 years time. I have no way of predicting what people will still be listening to. As for myself, I like all three, so I will probably still be listening to all of them, but most likely Depeche Mode and the Smiths, more so than New Order.

Just a suggestion, but next time you start a thread, don't get all pissy on someone who is just asking you to elaborate on the question you pose. Why else would you start a thread if not to get feedback and opinions from everyone?

THE SMITHS!!!

No, but seriously though, they were all great in their own way. It's just that I love the Smiths and they could kick Depeche & The Cure's ass any day.

Not to say I don't love The Smiths, because I do. However, Robert Smith is a music genius and I believe he's just as poetic as Morrissey. Plus, The Cure has a much more extensive catalog. I'm not dissing the Smiths, as they are my current favorite of everyone being listed, but The Cure is in another league in my opinion.

That's funny! That seems out of character for him, because he loves Bowie. He performed with him in 97 for Bowie's 50th birthday concert. In any case, David Bowie WAS a has been in 86-87. He didn't fully come back until 1993.

Also strange cuz Bob also has said that Bowie is his only influence. shrug

Do you own "BloodFlowers?" It is a fantastic, top-notch, classic Cure album! It doesn't have a radio-friendly single, but neither does "Pornography," another Cure classic. I really suggest either buying it or giving it another listen- it doesn't disappoint!

On top of that, I heard "Maybe Someday", "There Is No If..." and "The Last Day Of Summer" a lot on the radio and they definitely stood out from the crowd.
