The difference between rap and hip hop ....... As you may all come 2 know or may not, I'm a big hip hop fan... Yes indeed, I do tend 2 like the music, because if there's one thing for sure it speaks for my generation... now just the other day I was talking to guy, he was a white guy may I add who didn't know much about the music and he asked me a question I really hadn't thought about, which was "what's the difference between rap and hip-hop?" I had to think about for a second and the best way I could describe it was... Hip-Hop is like the alternative version of rap music, I say alternative because it doesn't speak of the usual genrae that rap music speaks of. Most rap music is superficial and talks about, pimping, bitches, money and hoes, while hip-hop seems to reach a universal persona and reach people on a deeper level. While most rappers talk about they hood, true hip hoppers tend think concouiness wise and get to you on a whole lyrical level. I don't think he gotta, he wanted me to go into more details on the other foot it made sense to me, but anyways I went on giving him more example and this is what I said...
People like Dr.Dre, Snoop Dogg, Master P, Ja rule, 50 cent, Emenim, etc is more rap then hip hop... And then you have people like talib Kewli, Mos Def, Common, Q tip, Black eye peas, which is more hip hop then rap music... it's two completly different things once you look at, Just like you got Hard Rock, Then metal and Alternative, there's different kinds of rap music that's not all classifield into 1, then we go into this big arugment about there is no difference in the music, rap is all the same. Then that ended up into a big argument and the conversation never really ended with a conclusion, I thought this would make a good thread and see what some of you had to say... Okay so here's the thing, If you listen to hip hop/ Rap Music, is there a difference or is it all the same in other words what's the difference between one or the other ???

Digital...I am not going to "read" your thread, but simply give you my take on it...cause your thinking kinda sickens me at times...but you know I love you!! Rap is pretty much folks who were "actually" hip hop fans at the very least in their humble beginnings...but Rap is that bullshit you see on that idiot box in your living area. Hip Hop...does not care about record sales...Hip Hop doesn't look to fabricate a lifestyle or image to make their money or create their following...Hip Hop stays true to the art of the skill and cares not about the commercialism. Hip Hop is about the lyrical wordsmiffs that can flow! Rap cares about booty shakin, bling blanging, fabricating beefs, and posing!!!...for the record companies that promise to make them fuckin stars!!!..while they are inundating our youth with false idols...and I call them false "idols" because...I work in the inner city schools...and the shit is mind blowing how they all can only see just that in life...it is fucking amazing, but just another part of why blacks only can be or portray thugs, gangstas, ballers, playas, clowns, or any other bullshit roles we constantly get!! It is all part of the plan by the man!! To keep us down and wallowing in others low ass expectations of us...and to also create just another bullshit negative image of us to hate and be scared of...Rap has no conscious...Hip Hop is ALL ABOUT CONSCIOUSNESS!!! The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them. -- Mark Twain.

I'd say "Rap" is only a speaking technique..and "Hip Hop" is not only a music genre, it's graffity, basketball, breakdance, fashion and so on. A lifestyle.
Hope that helped. | |

Hope that helped. Exactly! Rap is a small part of Hip Hop.

I've heard it describe that way...Hip Hop is the culture...music, clothing...a way of life...rap is just the music...small part of the big pic.

I believe the teacher KRS-One said it simply and succinctly: "Rap is business music. Hip Hop is cultural music."

Hope that helped. Exactly! Rap is a small part of Hip Hop. This WAS true but I feel it no longer applies. Much in the same was as all colas are now referred to as a "coke" even if it's not that brand name. Hip hop now has become more of a way to describe the music and/or beats with rap being the lyrical part of it. When Hip Hop first started it was a word used to described break dancing, fashion and graffiti as was stated. Rap was actually the smallest part of this culture. But remember, back then all rapping was done over soul and disco records. "Hip Hop" music was created out of mixing and scratching these records. After time a distinct sound emerged from this process and was simply called hip hop. I know I'm not saying anything most of us here don't already know, but my point is we are almost 30 years into hip hop now and that's a long time. In that amount of time a lot can and does change. If you don't believe me go out and look for the break dancers and graffiti artists. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

Hope that helped. I agree with u ,but also I say that Rap & hip-hop are the same only in theory, because they are both poetry 2 music, however anyone who says that Rap is mindless & talentless music(no-one here) Needs a GOOD SWIFT KICK IN THE NUTZ but as far as rap & hip-hop being the same they are totally different as far as values & respect is concerned. rappers again are about bling-bling & hoes & bentleys.hip-hoppers are about technique & style & sometimes political issues. I am an avid fan of both rap & hip-hop, but 2 me (being a DJ) it's all about beats. but as a fan of music it is all about presentation & style & uniqueness. that's why I really dig Prince, because he is so unique. P.S. 2 DIGITALISA verrryyy good topic & very worthy of discussion 4 people that just don't know!!! kudos!!! **************************************************

Me being there when hip-hop was born. Rap is tha music and Hip-hop is tha Culture. simple. im not very proud of tha state of hip-hop culture right now.when i was growin up. no one died,no one was being shot at. we could all go to tha park and dj and emcee and watch battles and nothing and i mean nothing ensued.we were all there to have a good time.
but times change. and now everyone wants to be this "Gangsta" n shit.there's alot of cats who are real and true 2 hip-hop culture. and some who arent. if tha industry can weed out tha fakes, from tha true lovers of Hip-hop culture.then it could possibly go back 2 a good state.

Literally speaking rapping is what a rapper does and that stays the same if the genre is labelled Hip-Hop.
There's become a dividing void though yeah with "Hip-Hop" = credible and "rap" = commercial. Not much more to be said really?

hip hop entails BREAKDANCE+RAP+GRAFFITI SIMPLE AS THAT If that's the case where are the break dancers and graffiti artists today? Again, that was the origin of the word hip hop but it no longer means that. Today hip hop is music, slang and style and that's it. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance
