Well,the weekend is upon us so it's time to pull out those 70s Disco compilations.I do this every weekend.Disco is the ultimate "party music",particularly the stuff that came out in the late 70s.I have such fond memories of this era.Right now,I'm listening to 'The Disco Years' Volumes Four and Five from Rhino Records.There are some cool songs on these CDs...

"Good Times" by Chic
"In The Bush" by Musique
"I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)" by Inner Life


and,yes,there are some truly embarassing tracks as well...

"Automatic Lover" by Dee D. Jackson
"Boogie Motion" by Beautiful Bend
"I'm On Fire" by 5000 Volts


But even the bad songs are fun,in a campy sorta way...lol...what I like most about Disco is,these songs are all about having a good time.Forget about the problems of the world,let's get dressed up,go to a Disco and dance the night away.No one's talking about killing anybody or calling anyone a "bitch" or "ho".It's fun music!

I loved the disco aspect of music growing up in the 70's and 80's and still stand firm that disco music was not all that bad. I can understand the viewpoints of hard core funkster's discontentment with it, but even so, one can get some funky rhythms as well as a lot other great stuff out of disco...


***The Jacksons- Shake Your Body Down To The Ground{European 12' remix version}...No not the version on Destinyalbum, this was the remix European version that Epic released in the summer of 79'. When DJs started playing this one...request would pour in like crazy. This version was 5 times as better as the take issued on the Destiny album. The 12 inch of this song set the tone for the release of "Dont Stop Til You Get Enough" {released in summer of 1979 as well}. A disco gem.


***Sister Sledge-He's The Greatest Dancer...Kathy Sledge was the BOMB back as well as the rest of her fly sistas. This song has a nice scratchy guitar riff that only Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards can serve up.


***Ami Stewart-Knock On Wood...Ami knocks the cover off of this soul remake...



***Gene Chandler-Get On Down...Uh-oh some of you may have forgotten about this one. But the man that gave us that soul hit "Rainbow" was grooving big time on this when he decided to travel down disco lane..."get down baby- bubba"


***Slave-Just A Touch Of Love...A clinic on how to bass via Mark Adams {for all ya'll bassists out there}. Listen to how Mark rides within the groove in a subtle way, but at the same time, step outside with little slaps here and there without demolishing the context of the song structure. Then on top of all that he delivers a nice solo on the instrumental break toward the end of the song. The funk is there in this track but there is also a disco backbeat. Excellent and dare I say it CLASSIC stuff. One of my all time favorite jams...


***GQ-Disco Nights(Rock-Freak}..."The feeling right... the music's tight on a disco niiighht"



***Issac Hayes-Don't Let Go...An excellent song in which Ike like Slave proves that you can take disco elements and make a great song. The bridge in this song IS THE TRUTH!!! Worth the price of admission in itself.


***Chic-Good Times...Nothing needs to be said here


***Jerry Butler-Coolin Out...Jerry was nicknamed "The Iceman" long before George Gervin was . This was a nice little disco jam that came on Philly International Records in 1978 with Kenneth Gamble And Leon Huff producing.

I've heard both David Bowie and Cher do covers of this song in the seventies and while both where very good, Ami's was really hot but shockingly, you don't here it mentioned very much in disco specials anymore. I wonder why not?

When it comes to disco it has to be Donna Summer! She just did it all and did it well. Excellent voice and smart songwriting with Pete and Girgio's music was outstanding.

I remember lovin disco back in the 70s when I was growin up...but now a days I sreiously can't listen to most of it. Bee Gees are somewhat tolerable as are certain other tracks, but most of it reminds me of chicks with untrimmed bushes (aka 70s porn).

I like disco too.

For my birthday, we went out to a club that was purportedly playing disco music, but they played Blondie's "Call Me," The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" and Cameo's "Word Up." In any case, I asked if they'd play "Erotic City" for me as it was my birthday, and they said they wouldn't be playing 80s. I should have asked why they played 3 songs from the 80s at that point, but didn't want to push it.
