one of the few genuinely perfect, or near perfect albums. barely a note out of place. its pop/rnb perfection. quincy jones knew how to trim the fat.

Quincy Jones didnt work on Triumph...that was produced and arranged by The Jacksons, Greg Phillinganes... and also TomTom84 & Jerry Hey (from Earth, Wind & Fire's production crew)...thats why the horn section parts all over those songs are Earth Wind & Fire horns.

Yeah, I'm kinda Thriller-ed out but this looks interesting so I'll have to check it out. After all, the trailer looks like this will contain footage of the album being recorded and that should be dope. * Regarding Spike Lee's Bad documentary, I enjoyed it overall (agree with not needing the Kobe/Kanye/Rosie Perez commentary) but the footage of Michael and company at the Waldorf coming up with the Bad choreography was some of the coolest MJJ stuff I've ever seen...

i know that! i was talking about thriller which remains a masterpiece. obv off the wall is brilliant. but they are different albums. off the wall has better grooves. thriller is just one of those meticulously crafted records you dont get much anymore. plus, even if you hate the hits now, it has human nature. it has PYT. it has lady in my life.

Bore..is a strange word to describe Thriller. Maybe outgrown That record is electrifying then and now... It's a Vibe..Michael's energy is in those albums...u feel it....
I do agreee about taking advantage of the video era..altho MTV didnt wanna play it at first. But those visuals are tied to that album.. But yeah..Right place..right time..
Is it the best album i heard ? No.. Ive heard alot since that album..so i outgrew it in a sense myself... But its a classic...make no mistake

So many of these albums that we grew up with were so overplayed (at the time) it's easy to throw some shade on them now. Even though they're every bit as brilliant now as they were then.

Nah...Purple Rain still sounds great...id rather hear "Take Me With U" than ""Billie Jean" everytime...everyday..."When Doves Cry" and "I Would Die 4 U" never sound old and ran through, like "Beat It" and "Thriller" more proof that P > MJ

Bore.....yes. Good example, listen 2 Billie Jean (a song I love) from a instrumental or lyrically. The music is bacally a 5 minute loop and the lyrucs could have been wtitten by a 10 year old. I dig the song but when u break it down musically.......there isn't much there. Graycap23 was ME!

I guess as a musician..u feel it's no longer innovative and so your viewpoint is to deconstruct and break down the ingredients. But I'm into sound... whatever moves me. I'm wit it.. However simple or complicated to achieve that sound

To me,"Billie Jean" is one of those timeless songs that still packs a punch. It never gets old.Once that beat starts,I instantly start bobbing my head

Is it the best album i heard ? No.. Ive heard alot since that album..so i outgrew it in a sense myself... But its a classic...make no mistake Taking advantage of the video era, that's disputable...He did less than the other acts at the time. He paid himself a large part of the Thriller video, just like he did years before with Can You Feel It. The other artists took advantage of that new tool, that's for sure. There were so many hits on Thriller that didn't use a music video : Human Nature, PYT, Girl Is Mine ( but McCartney's record company clearly took advantage of MJ, contrary to Epic who didn't see the point). It s shocking, even for 1983, that there was no video for Wanna Be Startin'Something ! As a kid, I pictured one in my head... For Victory, MJ didn't bother to shoot music videos neither. It s hard to imagine such an artist launched the Bad album with no video for the 1st single... After Thriller, MJ/Epic could have released Lady In My Life with a cheap but clean video : it would have been top 10 hit for sure, and a classic song for MJ. He doesn't have much romantic ballad song in his adult hits catalogue ( besides I Just and Liberian Girl maybe?).

I’m not a big MJ fan but I appreciate the cultural phenomenon of Thriller, the album and song, plus there’s some top notch pop on it.
What I’d like on this doc is confirmation that Prince did attend the first viewing of Thriller. At a private first showing in November ’83, wrote Vanity Fair, “The A-list turned out … at the 500-seat historic Crest Theatre: Diana Ross, Warren Beatty, Prince, Eddie Murphy. Fourteen minutes after it began, the crowd was on its feet, applauding and crying, “Encore! Encore!” Eddie Murphy shouted, “Show the goddamn thing again!” And they did.” https://www.vanityfair.co...ler-201007 (Link may be a subscribe only, but possibly viewable as a one off, first time - it was for me) [Edited 11/17/23 2:31am] There may or may not be something coming!

Caught this on Showtime on last night. While there's lots that I could critize or complain about, still loved it. Archive footage from the recordings of the songs, anecdotes from people that were around during that period, and lots of little "details" that I forgot or never knew. All in all, a great documentary and possibly better than Spike's Off The Wall and Bad docs.

Apparently this documentary is a piece of crap with only 2 or 3 people that were involved in the making of the album Thriller. Only 4/5 minutes of unreleased footage, like performances of the Victory tour in HD, which only make you think " why they can't just release it instead?" And by the way, couldn't they just release the making of Thriller, instead of intervizwing John Landis? Fuck the estate, and especially John Branca who has nothing to do with Thriller, but is still interviewed in this documentary A review of the documebtary here ( english subtitles ) : https://youtu.be/lzE7l1yK...wy4cqdl8i9

1) I really liked the footage of Victory...I wish they would release the full concert in HD.
2) Wasn't John Branca Michael's attorney at the time of Thriller? I think he was, but I could be wrong. If he was then he certainly should be in the documentary because as his attorney he made a lot happen..including Michael getting back his masters.
3) Thanks for the link to Hector's review. He is such a superfan.
Edit: I think Branca came in during the promotion of Thriller, after MJ fired his Dad as manager, but was not there during the making of the Album itself. https://apnews.com/genera...ed333cfe05 [Edited 12/5/23 10:04am] To All the Haters on the Internet

Kind of off topic but aside from a bit of controversy over fake recordings and some truly awful remixes, is there any reason why the Michael Jackson estate haven't been more active with new releases? I'm sure his "vault" is nowhere near as big as the likes of Prince and other artists but there's bound to be some unreleased gems hiding away. That Chicago 1945 song that leaked out was great. Why not release ot officially?

Good question. I Know there is more stuff out there. Only time will tell. I must say though his estate is currently outearning most living entertainers..so they know what they are doing with releases. See the article I share in my post above yours.

Branca is a business man, not an artist. He shouldn't have been of the two people who runs MJ estate. Do I really have to tell you everything he turned into shit after MJ's death? Londell McMillan runs Prince career smoothly compared to Branca running MJ. He s the guy that said " let' go with the Fake songs " on Michael on 2010, thinking people, especially MJ fans, were too dumb to recognize MJ voice from zn impersonator. The guy that made some greedy producers sign a NDA to produce fake songs. Then I could continue : Visions : music video that said to be " restored" but with a worst picture quality than on the 2001 dvds.... Oh and fuck, not worth my time. Go check yourself. He a'd his friend John McCla'e, fucked all the posthumous releases, and fucked sovmany opportunities to release music and videos, that I lost the count. Which is terrible, is that Branca prevented every interesting release to see the light of day, but wasn't even able to prevent Leaving Neverland to be released...while this doc. Uses MJ songs in it. Try to find logic in that. [Edited 12/6/23 15:25pm]

I found parts of the documentary interesting (in the making of certain tracks/the victory tour)...and then other parts a little "thick" with the historonics about certain aspects. Some of the fact checking (the reality) was poor. So the 2 or 3 people made the documentary they were probably not there at the time, or just kids. Example 'MTV", so they take the time to mention MTV and how they didn't want to play Billie Jean; it was a bit one sided, but that's fine (the documentary is from this side). Then the go on to say Michael, Lionel and Prince (which is fine they were on MTV and there) talking about the other black artist on MTV at the time. Then they mention Tina and Whitney. Wrong ..not true !! Whitney wasn't there...83/84. She debut in February 1985. MTV switched from a primarily a Rock station to a Top 40 station in November 1984. Her first video played by MTV was HWIK (December 1985), it got played in heavy rotation in January 1986 (being the 20th video by a black female artist placed in heavy roation to that point). It was Donna Summer, The Pointer Sisters and Tina Turner (and Shelia E)..who were the black female artists being played alot by MTV back then. Donna was the only black female in 1983 to have videos placed in heavy roation. Anyways these music history documentaries need to start getting their facts straight, and stop depending on wikipedia (or the other irresponsible sites) to get information. It is doing a great disservice to the music artists and history.
