The Atlanta duo’s fifth album is now certified 13x platinum by the RIAA, surpassing Eminem’s “The Eminem Show.”

Outkast now has the biggest-selling hip-hop album in music history. On Friday, Sept. 29, the Recording Industry Associ...of America officially certified the group’s 2003 album, “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,” as 13 times platinum.

“Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” surpassed Eminem’s “The Eminem Show,” which is 12 times platinum, according to RIAA.

Outkast’s Big Boi commemorated the occasion with an Instagram post last week. He posted a video of himself unwrapping a 13x platinum plaque of “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” on the weekend of its 20th anniversary.

“Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” is only one of only seven hip-hop albums to be certified diamond, meaning 10 million units sold or more. 2Pac‘s “All Eyez On Me” (1996) and “Greatest Hits’ (2000), as well as The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Life After Death” (1997) and Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP” (2000) are each 11 times platinum. Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” (1998), Beastie Boys’ “License to Ill” (1986) and Eminem’s “Curtain Call: The Hits” are each at 10 million units sold.

The Atlanta duo released “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” as a double album, with each CD as solo recordings from Big Boi and Andre 3000, respectively.

Big Boi’s “Speakerboxxx” disc expanded on the fusion of hip-hop and funk the group had pioneered in the 1990s, featuring guest artists like Jay-Z, Killer Mike and Ludacris. For “The Love Below,” Andre 3000’s music was more experimental. The lauded MC opted to sing on most of the tracks, rapping on only two of the disc’s 21 tracks — “Valentine’s Day” and “A Day in the Life of Benjamin André (Incomplete). His guests included Norah Jones and Kelis.

The album, Outkast’s fifth, became an instant hit. “The Way You Move” and “Hey Ya!” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the duo won three Grammy Awards, including for album of the year. Hill’s “Miseducation” LP is the only other hip-hop album to win that award.

Following the success of “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,” Outkast released one more album, 2006’s “Idlewild.” Since then, Big Boi has sustained an acclaimed solo career, releasing three solo and two collaborative albums with Phantogram and Sleepy Brown, respectively. Andre has yet to release a solo project since, but has rapped as a featured artist for several others, including Rick Ross, Kanye West and Frank Ocean.

I really like this album. I am glad it has enjoyed the success it has.

This was always a weird marketing gimmick. It's two separate albums, one southern rap and the other a Prince impression.

Didn't it win a bunch of hip-hop awards, too?

Their first couple albums were OK...but it was the beats/production that carried those joints...after Rico Wade (Organized Noize) stopped making their beats, they fell off...3000 and bigboi have never been elite MCs technically...bigboi makes Tony M. sound like Nas

I only loved there first two albums. I was more a Goodie Mob kind of guy.

stankonia from a production/musical pov, was amazing.

but it had so many good songs like ms jackson, idk how that could be seen as a fall off

I agree they were good and they kinda sucked.

Great production, Organized Noize were influential and underrated. Andre 3000 had some interesting things going at times.

Big Boi 100% in the Tony M. league of rappers, though. He goes fast that's all he's got. And even then it's like the worst fast rap in the game.

As a group, yeah, ATLiens, Stankonia, solid efforts overall... still I never got down with this co-opting both their solo albums as an "Outkast" record, though, no matter how much I enjoy 'The Love Below' in several spots.

i thoguht atliens was good but overrated, it was just praised cos ppl like moody second albums, the whole introspective vibe got a bit dull though

aquemini was kinda bloated IMO

stankonia was them diversifying a lot, and really tightening everything up

i think this and their first album are their best

the debut was their most natural sounding, rap-wise - before they decided they had to reinvent themselves all the time, which IMO wasnt always to the benefit of their rapping

plus that one just bangs hardest

bought this flip/flop cd when it was released and posed it as the stankest thang in '03.

Now i just have the released singles ripped to digital just in case someone asks, "Hey Ya!"???

Outkast is a totally unique hip hop act, to compare them to others does them a disservice. Congrats to both of them for their accomplishments. ONP was a steady, reliable production team and a great mix to Outkast's style.

Outkast are easily one of the top three rap groups of all time! They represent my beloved ATL perfectly.

I don't think Outkast is overrated at all. I think Outkast, Goodie Mobb, and the Geto Boys were

the best on the Southern rap scene. That Florida rap was trash however. I never liked Luke and 2 Live Crew, 95 South, and all that booming bassy disco rap. SouthernPlayaCadillacMusic, ATLiens, Aquemini,and Stankonia was a classic period for the rap duo. By the time Aquemini was released and charted they were the biggest rap act in the game. When they did Speakerboxx/LoveBelow Andre 3000 made it clear he had gotten bored with rap? It had become monotonous. That's why he tried his hand at singing. No different from what Queen Latifah and CeeLo had done. Speakerboxx wasn't their best but it certainly wasn't bad.
