Rock & Roll HOF '23

Finally...Chaka's getting in and well deserved! Still waiting on New Edition and Patti LaBelle to get nods but this is progress.

*

...and I love that the Spinners & Kool Herc are getting in! Props to all of the honorees.

It's quite the list this year.

Performer Category

Kate Bush
Sheryl Crow
Missy Elliott
George Michael
Willie Nelson
Rage Against the Machine
The Spinners

Musical Influence Award

DJ Kool Herc
Link Wray

Musical Excellence Award

Chaka Khan
Al Kooper
Bernie Taupin

Ahmet Ertegun Award

Don Cornelius

I expect Rage to get angsty about it, shit on it maybe. Super happy about the other performers. The rest are well deserved too. But they did snub Zevon this time.

From their site:

  • Performers: artists who have created music whose originality, impact, and influence has changed the course of rock & roll.
  • Musical Influence Award: artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting youth culture.
  • Musical Excellence Award: given to artists, musicians, songwriters and producers whose originality and influence creating music have had a dramatic impact on music.
  • Ahmet Ertegun Award: non-performing industry professionals who have had a major influence on the creative development and growth of rock & roll and music that has impacted youth culture.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I was done with them after Whitney and Biggie were inducted on their first nomination. I didnt even realize Chaka was nominated this year. Very happy for her, even if it should have happened 20 years ago and she should be inducted as a performer, not the musical excellence award which is still a slight and seems to be used for artist who have had difficuty being inducted as a performer.

Iron Maiden was high up in the votes with Warren Zevon but were passed over. I didn't expect Missy to get in, though I adore her, it isn't my HOF.

Still insane that SOUNDGARDEN loses out, should have been in before Nirvana and Pearl Jam since they were the originators of that sound, and also like Pearl Jam became more than it. Iron Maiden was beyond snubbed though I am not a fan of theres or know much of their music, they deserved awhile ago and I AM SURE knowing the RNR HOF they will get one of the token nods like Judas Priest got and LL cool J got. Zevon was a snub, I am shocked about KATE BUSH because it is almost all from the resurgence due to stranger things, america is not too aware of her work other than one song and her duet with Peter Gabriel

Yeah that shocked me that she got in as a performer, I would have had her in the excellence category not perfomer. Soundgarden again is the biggest snub of all, mainly because they were years before Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and both clearly site Cornell as one the best voices in rock ever. My guess is they were worried over the legality battles within that were just settled weeks ago, and the HALL wants to cash in on them next year when new unreleased material will most likely be out

.

She wasn't. The Musical Excellence award is selected by a special committee, not the R&R HOF voters.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

In what solar system does Missy Elliott get voted into the RRHOF but Chaka Khan does not? Yes, Chaka is going in but only because the Hall went around the voters and decided she should be in by formal decree - by an act of God if you will - but NOT by will of the majority of the voters. Chaka Khan is the most talented and influential female soul singer of the rock and soul era. By far. Yes, of course, there is no accounting for taste, but no serious person who was alive in the 70s and 80s can possibly deny that Chaka's talent and impact was that astronomical. She exists - or ought to - beyond music - she is a national treasure. There is a grand total of ONE of her kind and there has not been nor will there be another. She was a former Black Panther hunted by the FBI who played for years right after the Civil Rights Movement in an integrated band that came out of the most racist and segregated city in the Northern United States. Perhaps, just perhaps, THAT is why she has been kept out of the Hall for all these years, and why when finally her induction could not be put off any longer, it wasn't done properly.

I totally agree.Chaka should have been inducted years ago.She should not have had to wait this long. It's so unfair the way the RRHOF choose all these lesser artists to get inducted while they often ignore the truly talented, legendary artists.

Apparently, she has not "changed the course of rock & roll" so she is in this category.

One could make the same argument for Bernie Taupin. They're still in the hall. To me, the Excellence award really encompasses more than just being a regular inductee.

Same with LL Cool J. He got in under the same musivsl excellence award. So RRHOF felt Biggie Smalls was influential enough as a performer, with a whopping 2 albums in his discography, to be inducted on his first nomination but LL was not able to make the cut as a Performer after several nominations. It makes no absolutely sense to me.

Well, none of it does, really. The whole idea of the hall of fame immediately draws lines in the sand and creates division. It's a bit like Grammys. It's just nonsense.

Well Kate won't fly so she won't be showing up. Besides she's more into her gardening these days. I suppose it was Stranger Things and Running Up That Hill that finally got her the nod. About damn time too. Stupid RRHOF.
