"janet." 30th Anniversary Thread

On this day (May 18th) 30 years ago, Janet Jackson would unleash her 5th album simply entitled, "janet.". Once again working with long time collaborators, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the album would explore a more sensual and sexual side and was another smash hit for Janet. Come post your memories, pics and vids of this era and no bashing!

I made a janet.deluxe playlist on YouTube today. She released a new 3LP or 2CD set of the deluxe version. It's different than the Ltd Ed during that era.

The bonus disk includes:

1. And On And On

2. 70's Love Groove

3. One More Chance

4. You Want This (Remix)

5. Where Are You Now (Nellee Hooper Mix)

6. Because Of Love (Muggs 7" With Bass Intro)

7. That's The Way Love Goes (CJ R&B 7" Mix)

I remember just being enamored with the album when it came out. It was released when I really needed something as a distraction in my life. The prince was the same thing during that time.

I rode the janet. train for years after the fact.

Funny story about the album. One evening at home, I had all the windows open. It was nighttime, quiet, warm but not muggy. The house had all dimmed lights, the cats and dog were chilling. I was playing the album, just feelin' myself and feelin' a mood. I eventually went to just lay on my bed. It was near the end of the album. I could hear it through the house. I had dosed off in that last bit of "you still up" segues.

Then the album ends. It's quiet and I really start to fall asleep. Then I hear voices. Who the fuck is in my house?! And it's women? Is someone in my house?! I sat straight up on my bed. Then I hear "cuz we're trying to take a little trip here!" Is... is that Tina Landon's voice? Is that Janet's voice?

No, it's "Whoops Now," which I didn't know was on the album. In the day, when a CD was over, you stopped it, took it out and put in a new one. I knew the CD player would just shut off on its own... when the record was over. Clearly it wasn't, and it scared the shit out of me.

And that is how I learned about hidden bonus tracks. lol

I love how the album is such a juxtaposition to the militaristic nature of Rhythm Nation 1814. Then she comes out, toned down, curl, streaked hair, mid-drift showing, just sexy and feeling herself. She had never more enveloped her aesthetic as she did during those two albums.

But hot take: I'm sick and tired of "Again." I've been skipping it lately whenever it comes into play. I've just heard it more than enough at this point.

Ha, hidden track. I don't remember hearing it.

It's midriff. Weird word. I had to Google.

wish she'd just release janet.remixed on streaming, these little cuts from it are nice but I want the What'll I Do rock version at my fingertips.

if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

CoolMF

Great album and real game changer. Also, fantastic production by Jam and Lewis. Salute.

I can't believe that the bonus disc somehow has the same shit as 1995's janet. Remixed, and yet even less. Considering I still have my original 1993 CD I bought at Target for 9.99, AND the Remixed CD - I don't see the need for this.

Why can't we ever get something previously unheard? Even if the demos sound weak as hell, I would love to hear it. Is this a Virgin Records problem or a Flyte Tyme ownership problem?

Daft Punk just put out a tenth anniversary of Random Access Memories where they run through the chord changes of a song and banter a little bit for only a minute of "Get Lucky". That's still more interesting than compiled remixes already available.

I don't even know that it's a problem as far as who owns it.

It takes money to put this stuff together, and create the marketing campaign, and all that's involved with that. Sales aren't what they used to be for anyone, it's very much a calculated loss sometimes.

And yeah, it's stuff that's already out. The fact that anniversaries for many of the albums have passed by with zero remastering or deluxe editions is a crime. A simple 3 disk set would work for most. 1) album; 2) b-sides and/or remixes; 3) outtakes. There aren't going to be piles of outtakes, but there has to be enough to have 45 minutes worth of music.

Virgin likely owns those masters, unless Janet has negotiated her way back to ownership. I thought a few years ago there were rumblings of a deal like that. But maybe I'm thinking of something else. I feel like Island/Def Jam is going to be the problem child with ownership, tho.

I love everything about this album, The maxi singles and the videos. Absolutely brilliant project. In hindsight I'd never love Janet as much as I did then ever again. To me, she peaked right there.
