Favorite Marvin Gaye album(s)? What's your fave album(s) by Marvin Gaye? And I mean "album", where every song on there you like or love and don't skip to the next song, you just let it play! Mine are:

Let's Get It On is my favorite Marvin Gaye album.It's an absolute masterpiece
Other favorites are I Want You and of course What's Going On.

"Here My Dear". It was ripped apart by the critics and it may have been released at the wrong time (the disco era), but it's a classic. I can hear the influence that it had on artists like Maxwell, D'angelo and Lewis Taylor. A real deep album and a "love/not in love" letter to his ex wife. | |

"I Want You" is one of the most overlooked and underrated albums in recording history...im listening to "All The Way Around" right now...i cant think of a better Marvin Gaye song that wasnt a big hit record.. Since I Had You I Want You After The Dance Come Live With Me Angel Soon Ill Be Loving You Strange Love I Wanna Be Where You Are All those amazing songs and beautiful productions...Marvin Gaye's sexiest and most unique album IMO, thanks to to great assist from co-producer and songwriter, Leon Ware...another overlooked and underrated Motown artist. Conceptually, Here My Dear is his best album.

What's Going on set the standard. Let's Get It On created a certain mood. I Want You continued on the LGIT groove. In Our Lifetime foretold the feelings of Hear My Dear. Hear My Dear was deep and personal for him considering the subject matter.
In the order I placed them is my contribution to the topic, Marvin definitely let loose from Berry's Motown controlling restrictions.

Regarding Let's Get It On,I have alot of childhood memories about this album
*** Could the forth track, "Keep Getting It On" ,be considered a remix?
***the B-side opener "Come Get To This" is my favorite Marvin Gaye song.His layered vocals,that unmistakably "Motown" sound,the saxophone fills throughout.....just a perfect song,isn't it?
***It's surprising that "You Sure Love To Ball" (one of the sexiest songs EVER) was released as a single back then
***Amazingly,the fan favorite "Distant Lover" was never released as a single.But as with most of the other tracks,it got alot of radio airplay and attention anyway.

I remember going to the record store with my mother when she bought this album.This was in 1973 or or 74.This was a VERY popular album back then and I knew all the songs and all the lyrics.It's one of those albums where you didn't have to skip any of the tracks.Every song was good! A few observations...

I remember my mom had the live version of Distant Lover on 45 which was released as a single in 1974. IIRC Keep Getting It On was the B side. Don't laugh at my funk
