studio versions of songs where a live version is more well known

Betty Wright ~ Tonight Is The Night
Betty Wright ~ Pure Love
Little Stevie Wonder ~ Fingertips
Peter Frampton ~ Nassau/Baby I Love Your Way
Peter Frampton ~ Show Me The Way

Wham! ~ Blue
The Time ~ The Bird
Cheap Trick ~ I Want You To Want Me
KISS ~ Rock And Roll All Nite
Chuck Berry ~ My Ding-A-Ling

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I'm going to side-step on this and make a footnote: I'd love to hear the unaltered "Bennie and the Jets." For years, folks thought it was a live cut, but in reality it's a studio take with a big ol' reverb on it audience sounds, etc.

So the non-live-not-live-anyway version could be better.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Could be wrong because I was young, but I thought Whitney’s version of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” was more popular in the live shows than the studio version. Like I said, that’s my recollection and I could be totally wrong.

For certain though, Stevie Wonder’s “Fingertips”.

During my high school days, the live version of "I just can't get enough" by Depeche Mode was a big hit in The Netherlands.

The live versions of "Devotion" and "Reasons" by Earth Wind & Fire (from the Gratitude album) seem to be more popular than the studio versions.

That live version "Mothership Connection" is wonderful, but I doubt if it is more well known than the studio version...

Peter Frampton Comes Alive & Cheap Trick obviously

Bob Seger - Turn the Page

RocknRoll All Night - KISS

I also knew the live version of Paul Mcartney's Maybe I'm Amazed before the studio version. I think the live version was the 'hit' version from Wings Across America in 76. Both are great though.

Where's the links to all of these songs that people are listing here?

That would be great. It's a bit weird as a live version. The song is odd (to me). Not bad, just sorta slow, drawn out. A quasi-blues song or something.

But maybe a studio version would be pretty sweet.

Oh yes. The live version of "Devotion" is sped up a little, and that note Phil Bailey hits towards the end? WOW!

Pearl Jam's Alive from Ten isn't live, is it?

Same with Running on Empty, Browne. That's been live all this time?

Oh! I forgot about Bad. That's the original Bad, by U2. From The Unforgettable Fire. They put out an EP after called Wide Awake in America that had a live version that was huge on WLIR, a Long Island radio station that played "new music," alternative. That was when U2 was still small enough to be considered cool.

The greater public wasn't too familiar with it, but people might remember them playing it on Live Aid in 1985. It was kind of rambling and messy, but the band's charisma was palpable.

The one time I saw them live was their Joshua Tree tour from a few years ago. When they played Bad it was a surprise. Magical.

It's a European thing.

Wiki:
Live performances of "Alive" can be found on European releases of Ten

Oh.
Didn't the US get the video with that particular live version?? I would guess that version would get more airplay than the studio recording

The video was probably played here (in the US). I only really remember Jeremy getting played (a lot).

But radio didn't play the video version. Why would they? It wasn't available for sale.

Ah, ok. I thought all the Ten releases had the live version. Here in Holland I only ever hear the live version on the radio almost never the studio version.
