I'm going to side-step on this and make a footnote: I'd love to hear the unaltered "Bennie and the Jets." For years, folks thought it was a live cut, but in reality it's a studio take with a big ol' reverb on it audience sounds, etc. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Could be wrong because I was young, but I thought Whitney’s version of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” was more popular in the live shows than the studio version. Like I said, that’s my recollection and I could be totally wrong. For certain though, Stevie Wonder’s “Fingertips”. | |

I also knew the live version of Paul Mcartney's Maybe I'm Amazed before the studio version. I think the live version was the 'hit' version from Wings Across America in 76. Both are great though.

Oh! I forgot about Bad. That's the original Bad, by U2. From The Unforgettable Fire. They put out an EP after called Wide Awake in America that had a live version that was huge on WLIR, a Long Island radio station that played "new music," alternative. That was when U2 was still small enough to be considered cool. The greater public wasn't too familiar with it, but people might remember them playing it on Live Aid in 1985. It was kind of rambling and messy, but the band's charisma was palpable. The one time I saw them live was their Joshua Tree tour from a few years ago. When they played Bad it was a surprise. Magical. |
