Any Portishead fans?

They may be the coolest group ever!

I love the way they mix hip hop beats with like real creepy, dreamy music. Kind of like movie soundtrack music. They are great. And Beth Gibbons has a great understated voice; really makes you shiver with the creepy stuff. Good ghostie music that at the same time makes your bootie shake. Gotta love that.

I have Dummy, which I think is an excellent project. Beth's voice is amazing.

When I am in the mood for that sort of music, I tend to listen to that project and Tricky's Maxinquaye (another great album).

in an odd turn of events, I lived in a house with 5 people when Dummy was out. We all bought the cd cos we all loved it. when we moved out, none of us had the cd anymore...and 3 of us had 3 jacket, with no cd in it...hmmm

stupidly, I haven't repurchased this yet... redface

Absolutely brilliant LPs. My friend got a DVD of Portishead live which had, as a "bonus", most of their music videoclips and their short film I think. Need to get my hands on that.

I have 3 of their CD's. I remember the first time I heard them was while shopping in a record store. I asked the clerk who it was and bought the Dummy CD that day. After that I have made it a point to purchase all other one's I have seen. I didn't like the song they played on the radio at all 'Sour Times'. That is one of their worst songs if you ask me.

I have to be in a "mood" for Portishead . . . somewhat relaxed, but also somewhat depressed.

I haven't listened to them in a while -- for me their music works best through headphones when I'm in bed . . .

My friend put me on to them. I still thought they were on the goth stuff, but now I'm hearing more of an R&B feel.

Yes Portishead is excellent. If you don't have the DVD you need it!! The Gibbons solo album is good but if you're expecting it to sound like Portishead it doesn't. There won't be a new album until next year most likely.

I have their 3 albums and the album Beth recently did with
Rustin Man -which is sooo beautiful.

Beth's vocals are breathtaking. She can croon a tune and
she can shift into "psychotic-minni mouse with an axe to
grind mode" just as easily. Those devious cartoon killer
vocals are best displayed on their second album.

The creepy songs are the ones I like most. Like "Humming"
and that other track that is right next to it on the 2nd
album [can't recall the name right now]. Those two are
excellent to listen to in your car driving home late at
night when everything's dark and deserted.

I can't wait for a new studio album and I was really quite
disappointed when it turned out that the "Aliens" album is
just a rumour spread on the net.

The Bristol-scene was interesting early- through mid-nineties. If you have Portishead's Dummy, Tricky's Maxinquaye and Massive Attack's Protection, hear how the following songs are linked to eachother, musically & and lyrically:
Massive's 'Karmacoma' & Tricky's 'Overcome': Tricky features on 'Karmacoma' which has basically the same lyrics as Tricky's 'Overcome'

Portishead's 'Glory Box' & Tricky's 'Hell Is Around The Corner': these two songs are depending on the same Isaac Hayes sample, I think Tricky made better use of the sample, more eerie!

Massive's 'Eurochild' & Tricky's 'Hell's Around The Corner: On 'Eurochild' Tricky raps lines of his own song.

Funny is that I've never read about this fact in the press or heard others discussing this. Also, the artists themselves aren't that talkative either.

When I was looking around for reviews of Maxinquaye a while back, I did read references to the similarities between "Glory Box" and "Hell Is Around The Corner", but like you, I have read nothing about the other comparisons you made.

I, too, feel that Tricky used the sample more effectively than Portishead, by the way...

I like both Portshead, Massive Attack and Tricky. But Portishead is my favourite. It's the music I put on when I'm writing. Their live-cd is outstanding. 'Roads' must be one of my favourite songs of all time. The solo-album of Beth Gibbons is also very good, but you must let it grow on you. I love 'Tom the model'

I do think it was very cool! I guess I like Maxinquay the best, maybe the darkest cd in my collection...it just breathes claustrofobia & despair.
