Actually P included IWYS in the 80's Medley performed on the Lovesexy Tour (briefly as all other songs part of it).

It was not an actual cover, but a little aknowledgement anyway.

Since when did Prince play an 80s medley on the Lovesexy Tour? It was 1988. Everything he'd put out, minus two albums, was 80s music. Are you referring to the piano segment?

I'd love to know the date(s) he did that, and hear audio if it exists.

I would also love to hear this. I didn't even know Prince did 80s medleys in his live shows.

I'm a little disappointed with the decision not to include any outtakes from Older on the Deluxe Edition. We know they exist because a lot of them are out there, freely available on YouTube in shit sound quality. It would have been nice to have them cleaned up and included but hopefully the GM estate have other plans for them. Perhaps, once they release the inevitable Patience Deluxe Edition, they will go back and release a compilation consisting purely of unreleased music? Including Trojan Souls wink

Talking of IWYS, I always thought "Aphabet Street" was Prince's lil' answer song to George. It's classic Prince but the verses sound abit George to me. Maybe Iam stretching abit LOL....

I don't see how one answers the other.

If I have to find some connection between P and GM works, as I said some years ago in another thread I think the way P structured and remixed "The Scandalous Sex Suite" was inspired by "The Monogamy Mix" of IWYS.

Three movement of similar lenght with sex as subject, with the original song as the first movement morphing into a second and third variations, each with a different subtitle ("Lust" - "Brass in Love" - "A Last Request" - - - - "The Crime" - "The Passion" - "The Rapture")

Two masterpieces, by the way.

I don't see how one answers the other.

I just think "IWYS" is influenced by "Kiss", so Prince checkmates him with "Alphabet Street". The stripped back guitar thing is more "Faith" I suppose LOL. Just me being silly razz

Feels wholly irrational. People have always said "I Want Your Sex" was very Prince-esque, but I guess I never quite heard it. I mean, sure - weird bass line, hooky synths, but everyone had that in the 80s. I guess it's as much Prince as it's not.

But with "Kiss" being so spartan, and "I Want Your Sex" being in three parts, and so lush throughout, I don't believe one was a direct result of the other.

If anything, Prince answered his own "Kiss" with "Alphabet St."

Back on track...

The Estate has announced that a documentary GM was working on when he died, narrated by himself about his life, Freedom Uncut will be shown in theaters on June 22. The estate has described it "his final work."

This... should be great.

GM was a huge Prince fan.

I spoke to him at the Prince and Revolution gig on 14th Aug 1986 (He as also at the show on the 12th, but I wasn't seated near him). He was so excited for the show.

I lived near him and spoke to him again briefly in a pub in Colney Heath (UK) in 89. He loved Lovesexy but less so about Batman.

Back in the Faith days he made no secret that he was influenced by Prince. I Want Your Sex is very much a nod, including the idea of letting a 12" becoming a different animal, using the sped up voice and recruiting Jam and Lewis for the Monkey single.

In his book Bare, he reaffirmed his love of Prince, but his one criticism was Prince's inhability to self edit. GM felt you should wait until to have the perfect album, rather than put our huge amounts of material.

In regards to their 90's relationship, I recall that their relationship cooled for a while when GM asked Prince for support in his 92 court case against Sony. Prince wasn't very responsive.

I think Prince's comments ('Peace to George Michael') in 94 was an olive branch following Prince's own fight with WB.

As for the Older re-release. It's a pass form me, it was already brilliantly produced and I have the content already.

Prince was too deep in his own shit to really be mentally or professionally available for anyone. GM may have taken it as a slight or something, but he certainly knew what it was like. Despite their battles having different dynamics, the idea of an artist in court fighting for their freedom ('90) was a shared experience.

I met both Michael Jackson and Prince but I would trade both those experiences to have met George Michael. Mind you, I can barely remember meeting MJ because I was like 3 or 4 years old at the time. And my "conversation" with Prince lasted approximately 45 seconds and consisted mainly of me trying to bluff my way into making him believe I knew more than 3 of his songs. But even so, if I was given the opportunity to go back in time and meet any of them before they died and hold a proper conversation with them I would choose George Michael. In a heartbeat.

I met Prince several times, but never met MJ (I did go to the Bad tour).

I've never been one to be starstruck and GM was about a normal a guy as you could meet. Although I only spoke to him a few of times, he would chat like any other person in the pub.

Strangely, in 1991 I saw him again, when I was having an informal job interview over lunch in Mayfair, London. Mid interview I realised that George sat down with a Tory MP on the table next to me. He seems to recognise me and gave a sort of 'Hi' and nod. Mid interview, I acknowledged him back. I got the job and I've always wondered if the HR director who employed me mistakenly thought I was friends with GM and thought it was cool.

The other thing that stuck out as odd was at that lunch, mid interview, I heard George place his order. He wanted one sausage, with nothing else accept a glass of wine.

No idea. I just have a feeling that I already have them all. I hope I'm wrong though lol

Only one ''previously unreleased''... remix. :-/

A few people I know who knew GM all say that he was really down to earth and a genuinely nice man. Although I did hear one story where he was in the studio with Andrew Ridgeley and kind of lost his cool a bit. This was after Wham broke up. I can't remember if it was during Faith or Listen Without Prejudice (in fact, it may have been even later) but Andrew came to visit him during a recording session, unbeknownst to pretty much everyone there). George was already not in a great mood that day. It was one of those days where if it can go wrong, it will go wrong. At some point or another Andrew chimed in with some advice and George told him to "go stand in the corner and do nothing like you've always done" lol

There was more to the story that I can't remember but that's the gist of it. Apparently, about 15 minutes later George and Andrew were off to the side giggling like little schoolboys so George's outburst didn't cause any permanent damage.

I also think what gets lost in those battles then, is no one really had Prince's back and no one really had George's either, if this was today everyone is for everyones rights and stuff, I mean look at Taylor Swift re doing all her records and how she wasnt given the opportunity to purchase her masters for early work, she had everyone on her side in the industry. People avoided Prince and George like the plague, including all media forms too, no airplay, jokes everywhere.
