Janet Jackson Documentary Thread (Jan 28 on Lifetime | A&E)

On January 28, in a two-night event, Lifetime and A&E Networks will air documentary by Janet Jackson.

An extended trailer was just released, showing a lot of footage, including Janet and Jimmy Jam fussing in the studio (a friend and I think it's the RN period, given Janet's hair, Jimmy's hat, the quality of the camera footage, and Jimmy talking about following up a huge record, presumably Control), Randy telling Janet that Timberlake's people have been reaching out about doing the Super Bowl (and Janet's face!), Katherine Jackson saying she can't talk about Michael, and so much more.

When the filmmaker asked Janet why, for being so private all her life, she wanted to do this now, she said, "it just something that needs to be done."

Some celebrities interviewed are Janelle Monae, Missy Elliott, Rebbie, Tyler Perry, Whoopi Goldberg, Regina King, Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, H.E.R., Q-Tip, Jermaine Dupri, Samuel L. Jackson (who jams to "Throb" on his phone, saying it's the best song in the clubs), and more.

There is, what looks like, wedding footage from her first marriage to James DeBarge, plus footage of Rene. And the headline, "Janet Jackson Had Secret Baby in the 80s." A voice over says, "it was a magic relationship if it didn't hurt so much." She laughs when someone asks about her relationship with men. That's gonna be a section I wanna know more about.

The trailer alone is enough to get any JanFam, like myself, up in their feelings. I can't imagine how I'm going to feel after January 28.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm literally doing anything to distract myself from the fact that there are still 23 days to go before we get to watch it.

So making a thread on the Org seems counterproductive. haha

This is a FULL CIRCLE moment for Janet(whom I worked with) I LOVE that it's in her OWN WORDS. So we get like she says "Straight From Her Mouth" like she believes.Janet is VERY private so this is unprecedented for her.

Yeah, she really is carrying that through, "you'll hear it from my lips" that she established just before Unbreakable came out. And five years?!?!?! I hope some extra stuff shows up somewhere after.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Metro says, in part:

Even with the almighty Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction controversy, it always felt as though Janet’s own voice was missing from the narrative and everyone else did the talking for her.

So perhaps for the first time, Janet – the documentary – offers a genuine insight into how the superstar has really navigated life in the spotlight.

*** Warning: Spoilers for Janet episodes 1-3 ***

From the opening scene where Janet breaks down in tears at the mere sight of a mural of her five brothers etched on a wall in their hometown of Gary, Indiana, it’s clear this documentary – directed by Ben Hirsch – wouldn’t do a disservice to Janet’s legacy by providing a polished portrayal of one of the most successful and complicated artists in history.
____________

Her marriage to first husband James DeBarge was whirlwind and came with its fair share of problems, notably his personal struggles, which Janet says contributed to their divorce.

However, a great deal of time is spent highlighting the importance of Janet’s marriage to second husband Rene Elizondo Jr.
___________

For nine years, Rene, who was a dancer for the singer, remains a constant in Janet’s life and his role in her career continually grows as does their love. He goes from being a character in the background to pulling the strings, directing music videos and even appearing in her iconic magazine covers.

It didn’t last and it’s with this tale of Janet and Rene’s marital breakdown that we get an admirable insight into her resilience, which is actually the overarching message of the film.

No matter what is thrown at Janet, she can always rise above it.

Even during the breakdown of her marriage to Rene, those closest to her were mostly unaware of the extent of marital issues that were creating a crater between the spouses. Aside from one dinner where Janet was noticeably down, she picked right back up and powered through like the true professional entertainer she was raised to be.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yeah, I tweeted about that. All she did was blather on and Janet barely got 2 minutes to say anything. The whole first segment was 10 minutes. Janet's time - 2 minutes at best.

Who's being thrown under the bus?

Rumor has it she's blaming Michael for being blackballed.

Another thing is she's accusing him of bullying and the cause of her weight issues.

But you ain't heard it from me.

I don't delve in rumors much, so you can handle those yourself.

It's highly doubtful she's going to throw Michael Jackson under the bus for anything. She's had 11+ years to do that.

It's not a rumour, as the clip/review is out. It's not exactly what she's saying. It's just a twisted version of what she said.

THANK YOU! Anyone with two eyes can see she's being sarcastic, basically pointing at the mass hysteria around the case against her brother, and saying, "I guess I'm guilty by association."

She never said she was black balled, nor that it was because of Michael Jackson's problems.

She also never solely accused Michael Jackson of bullying her about her weight. They all called her names. And we all know the names - from slaughter hog to donkey - and we've all heard that story. She talked about it, in 2011 in her book True You; a book - wait for it - about weight issues.

So no, CynicalKill, we "ain't heard it from you." We've only heard conjecture and untruths.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

They'll ALWAYS try to find and misconstrue a quote that doesn't mean what Janet's trying to say. Plus try to sabotage this groudbreaking project. I'm SICK OF IT! I won't stand for it either.

Who's sabotaging?

I for one will be there with glued eyes.

Hopefully it'll be filled with all the juicy tidbits I can sink my teeth into.

Like what really happened with Jermaine? Word is he cheated, sending her headlong into the arms of Al Mana, but not before signing the infamous $500 million prenup contingent on her first having a baby. Which she eventually DID have following some "harrowing" in vitro, a cancelled tour and a nasty divorce.

Will we get first hand accounts from first and second husbands James and Rene on their difficult marriages.

I'm sure the secret baby rumors will be addressed.

Does she have a good relationship with family rebel LaToya?

Will the infamous fight between her and troubled daughter of Michael Paris be addressed? Do they talk after cellphone-gate?

Not to mention the yo-yo dieting, career comeback-setbacks, Leslie Moonves, her fractured friendship with Justin Timberlake, and why on earth she decided NOT to perform with him at the superbowl.

If this thing gives the life it was destined to give people will be talking about it for weeks.

My popcorn will be ready!

It's almost like you don't know who Janet Jackson is or what she does. Or even LaToya.

You gotta lot of "word is, "rumor is", "infamous," and putting "-gate" on the end of something that is nothing, etc. Nothing solid, just pure gossip mill fodder. It's as if the truth is just secondary.

This isn't some sensationalized program REELZ is putting out. This is her story, her way. So I suppose "juicy" is relative to the viewer, not the truth of the story.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Jermaine Jackson needs his own documentary about that paint stencil hair line. hehe It's down damn near his eyebrows on the side of his head. Is he wearing a helmet? Is it a reverse tan?

But back to Dupri, he's in the trailer, so that should be interesting. I don't think Rene Elizondo is going to be in it. The divorced was noteably contentious. James DeBarge has opened his mouth about that baby rumor and that probably spoiled the pot, too. But, we'll see. Someone says, "It'd be good if it didn't hurt so much." (something to that effect). Was it Rene? James? Wassim? Are they even talking about her relationship? I cannot wait for this doc.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

From Rolling Stone...

The Janet Jackson documentary airs on Lifetime and A&E, so if you want to watch JANET on TV, you’ll need a cable package that gets you the Lifetime channel and/or A&E. Both are specialty channels and not a major network, so won’t be able to find the Janet special on basic cable. Instead, you’ll need a package this one from DIRECTV or this one from Verizon Fios that gets you Lifetime and A&E, so you can watch the Janet Jackson documentary on TV.

How to Stream the New Janet Jackson Documentary Online

Don’t have TV or cable? You can also stream the new Janet Jackson documentary from home. Here’s where to stream the Lifetime Janet doc online.
