official trailer for 6 hour "The Beatles: Get Back" on Disney+

ace375b840d8bdef13daa711d2e6cd898fa08ef6.jpg

Directed by three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “They Shall Not Grow Old”), “The Beatles: Get Back” takes audiences back in time to the band’s January 1969 recording sessions, which became a pivotal moment in music history. The docuseries showcases The Beatles’ creative process as they attempt to write 14 new songs in preparation for their first live concert in over two years. Faced with a nearly impossible deadline, the strong bonds of friendship shared by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr are put to the test. The docuseries is compiled from nearly 60 hours of unseen footage shot over 21 days, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg in 1969, and from more than 150 hours of unheard audio, most of which has been locked in a vault for over half a century. Jackson is the only person in 50 years to have been given access to this Beatles treasure trove, all of which has now been brilliantly restored. What emerges is an unbelievably intimate portrait of The Beatles, showing how, with their backs against the wall, they could still rely on their friendship, good humor, and creative genius. While plans derail and relationships are put to the test, some of the world’s most iconic songs are composed and performed. The docuseries features – for the first time in its entirety – The Beatles’ last live performance as a group, the unforgettable rooftop concert on London’s Savile Row, as well as other songs and classic compositions featured on the band’s final two albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be. It rolls out over three days, November 25, 26, and 27, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.

An exciting new collaboration between The Beatles and Jackson presented by The Walt Disney Studios in association with Apple Corps Ltd. and WingNut Films Productions Ltd., “The Beatles: Get Back” is directed by Peter Jackson, produced by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison, Peter Jackson, Clare Olssen (“They Shall Not Grow Old”) and Jonathan Clyde (“Eight Days a Week”), with Apple Corps’ Jeff Jones (“Eight Days a Week”) and Ken Kamins (“The Hobbit” trilogy) serving as executive producers. Jabez Olssen (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”) serves as the film’s editor, the music supervisor is Giles Martin (“Rocketman”), Michael Hedges (“The Adventures of Tintin”) and Brent Burge (“The Hobbit” trilogy) serve as the series re-recording mixers, and the music is mixed by Giles Martin and Sam Okell (“Yesterday”).

Looks like they used grain removal on this. They look a little video gamish or like wax figures

I don't much care about the grain removal. It looks fantastic. My roommate walked thru and said, "Holy shit, this looks like it was filmed yesterday." (You know, back when our troubles seemed so... oh, forget it.)

Anyhoo - I'm pretty stoked about this. Documentaries, especially about musicians, are right in my wheelhouse. This is going to be great.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

To me, removing the grain from movies/TV shot on film to make it look like a modern digital shot movie is the same as remastering an old album but brickwalling it. It's not the same quality and it tends to make the people look fake. The film grain wasn't removed from the Aretha Franklin Amazing Grace film.

Beatles are solid enough, but they get the friggin' deluxe royal extended unfiltered director's cut super intensive granddaddy mega edition every other year.

Somebody do a count on how many Let It Be / Get Back versions/films/retrospectives there's been...

And the king of not being unable to wrap up a narrative in less than 4 hours Peter Jackson.. Amazing he was able to get it down to 6 hours and only two-parters.

The Fab 4 have been a brand for decades now, like Marilyn Monroe. They're not just a music act. They have Lego sets, Monopoly games, dolls, a Cirque du Soleil show, video games, movies based on their music (Yesterday, Across The Universe), etc. They probably got more merchandise now than KISS. razz There's been at least 1,000 books about them over the decades, group & solo.

Paul McCartney told in a chat with Josh Homme recently that he was super excited.

They only had a mono toape, but with A.I. they were able to seprate the guitar part from the voice part for instance, making it possible to have a clea sort of new stereo approach.

McCartney was really excited about the whole project.

These came from the Steve Hoffman site. The top photos are the original and the bottom are from the new Get Back. Notice that John looks plastic and has less color to his face. In the Billy Preston photo, the windows in the new version has a more blue tint to them. It also looks like they cropped the picture to fit widescreen TVs.

Don't do Disney; I'll wait for the DVD set. The Beatles' doc that was shown in theaters a couple of years ago along with the rooftop concert was excellent.

It's possible that might not happen. So far anything labeled "Disney+ exclusive" has not been released on DVD. Unless Apple (Beatles company, not the computer) made some special deal with Disney.

The OGs are always better. Disney probably doesn't want people on Twitter bitching about film grain and "it doesn't fit my TV!"

Film grain is a solid concern, but cropping? Ugh, back in the days of VHS and early DVD every other jackass preferring the cropped pan&scan versions because "why pay for a TV and not have the entire screen filled?" There's people with stacks of "full frame" DVDs who now stretch them to fit their widescreen TVs. The issue is now the converse, any TV or non-movie media created pre-2008 that was shot in 4:3 risk getting cropped to now fit everyone's widescreen TVs....

OAR Original Aspect Ratio should be demanded by any fan of media, no exceptions.

Soul wasn't a Disney+ exclusve. It was originally a theatrical movie that was put on Disney+ because of movie theaters closing for Covid and so was the live action Mulan. Exclusives are the live action Lady And The Tramp and the Marvel TV shows like WandaVision, Falcon, Loki, & What If?. Disney+ exclusives are made for the channel, not for any other purpose.

I've seen a few TV channels that show reruns of older TV shows stretch the picture, which looks worse than cropping. I think a lot of people watch stuff on phones. Also many people today have only seen widescreen TV, not tube TVs. They might not watch a lot of older entertainment either. So they may not know the difference as far as OAR is concerned.

There’s been a lot of complaints about the widescreen conversion of “Seinfeld “ on Netflix that apparently cuts off some visual jokes

Not a screen complaint but the worst thing I've ever experienced was the sound on the movie Tenet. Tried watching it on Netflix and gave up after 5 minutes because the volume on the characters' voices was so low you couldn't understand what they were saying. All the other sound effects and music were LOUD. If it was like that in the theater I would have demanded my money back. razz

Christopher Nolan films are notorious for this type of mixing fiascos. “Interstellar “ especially

Nolan was claiming it was some sort of artistic intent with Tenet? Like he wanted to make movies "beyond dialogue" or something?

edit: found a source... Uhhhhhh, stuff like this is why he's got his share of critics:

Ugh.

Seinfeld
's a pretty major property, too. The Simpsons had similar controversy when it debuted on Disney+. The fanboys eventually got Disney to enable the option to watch the 4:3 OG versions or the 16:9 HD cropped versions in the settings.

Cleaning up the footage was a must, I remember years ago watching "Let it Be" on Video and I couldnt get through it, I had to forward to the concert, the lighting was terrible it was too grainy and dark and poorly edited so it needed it. I get the preserve the original talk, BUT it was also a BADLY shot film. So now just on the trailer and some other clips its audible, clearer, brighter.
