Women of Funk

When discussing funk music, genres and comparibles...women seem to get left out of the picture in a mostly male dominated genre of music.

Name some of the most funkiest women to ever grace the studio booth!

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Nikka Costa is another funky lady. I was listening to Cantneverdidnothin the other day, she has Wendy, Lenny, and a few other funky guests.

I'd like to add Dawn Silva to the list. Does anybody have her album "All My Funky Friends"? I picked it up for € 1 in a record store that was closing down and I remembered seeing her live in Den Haag when they had the North Sea Heats The Hague festival which was all sorts of open air gigs in the center of the city in the days before the North Sea Jazz Festival. The album is real old school P Funk.
By the way, Women of Funk would be a great name for an all female funk band. Imagine Ida Nielsen on bass, Cindy Blackman on drums, Candy Dulfer on sax, Rosie Gaines on vocals. Not sure about the guitarist yet...

MeShell. Her music has mellowed out over the years, but she could funk when she wanted to.

Yvonne Fair for "Let Your Hair Down" alone.

Maxayn is pretty great too, didn't see her mentioned.

I probably would throw in Angela Winbush’s name too, it’s not the only thing she did but she did amazing stuff during her stint as Rene & Angela, even the guys in Rufus played in their latest album before she went solo.

Mallia Franklin was the Queen of Funk. Hooked George Clinton up with both Bootsy and Junie. True visionary.
