Taylor Swift All Too Well

I'm amazed that I am the first person to make a thread about Taylor Swift's new release.

I think she's really great and I love her video albums to promote her work.

I honestly didn't pay attention to her before the 2009 MTV VMA's and she clearly loves the color red so what's not to love? In her short film "All Too Well" she loves all colors

Really, she's an all around joy; I know she "does the work" in her career so I completely respect her and I am inspired by her which is rare because it's tough to hold on to people who are inspiring because the inspiration feels like enough on its own but it isn't.

I'm wholly unimpressed by her. I don't deny she can sing and she's talented, but her songwriting is only as popular as it is because of Shellback or Max Martin. Not that it's wrong to pull in help.

I think what turns me off about her is her constant talk about her ex boyfriends. Yes, I get that folks write about their experiences, and their love relationships. But shit, Jake Gyllenhaal is just being dragged right now because of a fucking scarf. (To simplify it.) Does the song need 10 minutes to boo-hoo over someone?!

Then there's the video of her saying "oh shut the fuck up" at the MTV VMAs when Harry Styles and One Direction were presenting an award. She's sort of a low-key mean girl despite her "I'm really down to earth" persona. Poor Selena Gomez is sitting there like, "what do I do? So awkward! I need to hide my 1D CDs."

Then there's her getting up in her feelings about some of her dancers going to work for Katy Perry. A feud over DANCERS. Apparently, they've made up, but still. Why all the goddamn drama?!

So for me, her pre-show of all that (and more) puts off the main act of her music.

I tend to agree, except I'm not as partial to her singing as you are.

It's kinda why I appreciate John Mayer's "Paper Doll". Finally someone was clever and petty enough to come back with a retort.

Let me tell you how this works. The person who starts the thread (me in this case) has created an opinion. Everybody who comments after that is directed then to comment on what the AUTHOR OF THE THREAD said. Not about what you thought about the subject matter. Get it? So, you are supposed to comment back with things like "yeah I can relate about the inspiration bit that was really good" or "wow, you should start more threads it's nice to get a fresh perspective around here once and awhile". Your short attention span (and everybody else's) OF COURSE is focused on that stupid scarf. Do we all own scarves? It's about to be winter you know. Be glad that you've got a scarf. There's plenty out there who don't. I'm glad I still have the brown, tan and white crochet scarf with the matching hat that I was gifted when I was homeless in 2018. I'm never giving that shit up.

Ex boyfriends wouldn't even exist if they weren't evil exes so the exes might want to be glad Taylor provides relevance. Kanye knew he had to bust in on Taylor's moment at the awards because he knew she knew how to pay attention to men! Period. Poor Selena Gomez isn't sitting anywhere like anything except absolutely fabulous in every circumstance.

Maybe Taylor was tired on the day she had to go work with Katy Perry.

Finally, you have to admit, she can run up and down some subway stairs like it's anybody's business so sorry Superman (man man man) you weren't more powerful than a locamotive on that day. That day of the 2009 MTV VMA's.

Let me be clear: I generally dislike her. Partial. I'm partial to porcupines. Not TS's singing. hahaha

Let me tell you how this works, sis. I'm not seeking anyone's approval of my thoughts on Swifty. Nor do I look for validation on my own experiences with her or anyone else. I wholeheartedly don't care. In contrast, I'm also not trying to convince you, or anyone, of anything. That's not my goal in life; to convince someone on prince.org that TS is uninteresting or whatever. Do what you wanna do.

You can get up in your feelings about someone you don't know, who doesn't know or care about you - or not. I don't care. Just know...

Tayor is having an almost unparalleled career in terms of starting as a child star and maintaining and building such a huge fan base while garnering almost nonstop critical accolades. I didn't care much for her until Red came out and I got it for my kids due to the obnoxious but catchy bubblegum singles and was stunned to find out that there was a wide variety of good songs on it. I still think Red is her best, and the recent re-release of Red with several good vault cuts confirms that this may have been her creative peak. The 10 minute All Too Well was inpired.

I'm just glad she ONLY needed 10 minutes to pine over someone.

Doesn't sound very teenybopper angst-ish when I put it that way does it?

Yes, it was annoying to have to fast forward ten minutes solid during SNL last weekend. She creates lovely disposable music, apparently.

I respect her for doing what Prince claimed he would do and re recording her catalogue to create new masters. I bet the company that bought her masters never thought she’d actually do it. Seems like the re recordings are proving really popular so must be cutting into their royalties quite a bit.

I think YOU are only as popular as your references to other people's material, too, but unless we're sitting around making homemade pieces of our own bored game, play nice. And bring more Dorito's.

Girl bye!

All this for Taylor? Okay.

I'll admit she's not devoid of songwriting talent, at least when she first came out.

But the overall aesthetic has always been bland.

I prefer the melodramatic psychodramas and "inappropriateness" of Lana Del Rey.

At least she's cinematic.

Taylor just has about 50 boyfriends, one or two of which were interesting enough to actually make a song about.

Can you imagine all the s**t that would've went down if Lana made a 10 MINUTE VIDEO?

I saw a guy in a beard and a girl crying for 5 of those minutes in Taylor's video, or maybe I'm wrong. It was hard to pay attention during her SNL performance.

But John said it best: "You're like 22 girls in one...And none of them knows what they're running from".

Having a wikipedia page does not make anybody cinematic.

I'd love to see the examples of the melodramtaic psychodramas and innapropriateness of Lana Del Rey. I just don't get why Taylor Swift triggers so much appropriation. People are on this site like it's confession with what they state they have to admit.

50 boyfriends and you'd think somebody would be able to call her out for at least knowing what she writes about.

All of the responses to my thread are pointing to EVE/Gwen Stefani except y'all act like nobody blows your mind anymore now that Prince passed away. You honestly think he's reading your threads from heaven? Nothing ever happens. There.

I blame Kanye, he should’ve shut the entire fuck up during her speech. That moment was her big break.

That being said, regardless of how I feel about her music, I hope she gets her masters back.

She's making new masters. Scooter Braun is going to be a dick and keep her music from her, so she's releasing re-recordings of every record.

If you look at who has sold the most LPs in all formats the past two years, Taylor has 4 of the top 10 including her record breaking Red re-release with the vault cuts. This is nothing short of phenomenal for someone in her 15th year of her career. It is funny to hear the stereotypes of her being just teenybopper music (yes, years ago but hardly any teenybopper listen to her anymore. Her fans not only grew up with her, she has drawn millions of new older fans with her Folklore and Evermore albums). The comment in the thread about her just being about trying to make money off of being a victim is laughably ignorant. She is clearly has survived and shown strength in that she has not become self-destructive in the same way most mega teenage stars become. Moreover, her responding actively to not getting her masters back is doing something about it raqther than playing a victim role. Also, the songs of her recent albums show a relatively mature view of life and love that has nothing to do with victim-hood.

After saying all this, I totally get why some people might not like her music. I don't like all of it, and she definitely used way too may pop sweeteners in her vocalizations of her biggest hits for my liking. I just admire her career trajectory and her ability to somehow cope with being such a huge female star all of her life without flaming out despite all of the haters. To me, she is the opposite of a victim.

No. If you rerecord the song, and you're not under a contract, that new version is yours. As we know, record contracts typically have the artist surrendering ownership of the master recordings, and the rights to it, when they offer a song for an album. Since Taylor is not in a contract that way, if she re-records her music - which she's doing - and releases it, she owns that new master. Her only contract obligation is to herself. She can do it exactly like the previous version.

Journey, ELO, Gary Numan, and others have done this in recent years to regain ownership of their songs (or sometimes just put out a clearer version in the case of ELO).

I'm sorta thankful Prince, and his uber-religious self, never did that because he'd have changed shit and edited the fuck out of it.
