Culture Club Appreciation Thread

Any fans here of Culture Club? If so, come post anything (no negative bashing) on them, memoires, pics, vids fave songs, etc. And don't just make it about Boy George either.

Time is my favourite song of theirs, loved them since I was a baby. Saw colour by numbers at a wrecka stow the other day and almost bought it. Would rather get a greatest hits. I almost saw them in concert years ago but was out of town studying

A lot of people look at their garish image (really, Boy George's garish image) and consider them a novelty act that made good but these guys were legit. They had HITS and their albums were cohesive, quality projects with some top notch cuts, "Black Money" is my song!

Helen Terry MADE this track.

A member of this band was a customer somewhere I used to work and we got chatting as you do and he sorted me out with a pair of tickets to see them.
I attended a casual fan and came away blown away by them. Time was the stand out as someone mentioned here earlier. Great songs, great writing, lovely guys. So much more to them than the outrageous image. Lots of respect to these guys. Motown, black money was just like record. Brilliant. If you get to see these guys live even if not a fan, go, you'll come away majorly impressed.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

"Time", "Miss Me Blind", "Mistake #3" are all my favorites. But "Black Money" takes the top spot for me. R&B radio played it like it was a single.

I loved Culture Club. They just spoke to me. Their music was felt like light hitting you. It felt open, organic, almost under produced in some regards.

The first song I remember was "I'll Tumble 4 Ya." It was so quirky and fun, reminded me of other newer songs on the radio at the time. It had something fresh about it that you were just drawn to. (Naomi Campbell was in that video, for those that didn't know.)

Oddly, "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" wasn't nearly as big of a hit as "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" or "Time," both of which preceded IT4Y.

While "Karma Chameleon" was great, I was really pulled in by "Miss Me Blind," "It's a Miracle," and "Church of the Poison Mind," the latter of which could do no wrong. There was that gospel-y draw on it with Helen Terry's vocals.

I went thru a Boy George phase. I had this felt green Derby I got from Six Flags a few years prior. In junior high, for some reason, we were doing a lot of braiding with yard. We tried to make our own shoe strings, etc. I loved the shit George did with his hair. So, I made tons of those braided strips of yard (over a foot long each). I used masking tape and taped them inside the Derby. Then I could put it on and dance around in my bedroom like George, singing along to CC's music.

Yep, I was that gay.

Even though George sorta pooped on Waking Up With The House on Fire (because he was high all the time while making it), I really enjoyed "The War Song." I also loved their last real hit, "Move Away."

It was painful watching George go through his drug phase, the LiveAid weirdness (with the face mask on, and that awkward photo backstage with Sting, Sade and Peter Gabriel).

George grew up to be a bit of a twat in his older years. Too bad. I stick to their old music and go with that. The music empowered me as a gay boy in Oklahoma City in an uber religious household. When George told a national televised audience that people "knew a good drag queen when they saw one," that set me straight up in my chair. I wasn't even sure what a drag queen was, but I could tell by his band mates reactions that it was big. And it was.

By the way, Jon Moss was a fucking sex pot and he knew it. I can see why George pined for him, and thank God for it because we got songs like "Move Away," "DYRWTHM," etc. I used to damn near jerk off to Jon (Maybe it was something with dummers, because Roger Taylor from Duran Duran was a stone cold fox.)

First album I ever bought was 'Waking Up With The House On Fire' when I was 5 or 6. Was obsessed with Boy George as a child! Their first greatest hits from 1987 is a pretty perfect pop album!

I later got 'Luxury To Heartache' on cassette and then 'Everything I Own' on 7", but lost interest after that and moved on to Madonna. I did like that Jesus Loves You album he did in the early 90's though.
