MONTERO

Anyone else out there listen to this with an open mind? I was pleasantly surprised.

.

Really feeling VOID, TALES OF DOMINICA, and THAT'S WHAT I WANT. A lot of the sentiment of the young, sexually repressed, broke feelings of late teens/early 20s are captured in a lovely sentimental kinda way. I could relate to that line about the plastic bed popping in the middle of the night, I've been there.

.

I am not a huge Lil Nas X aficionado (don't tell anyone but i've never heard Old Town Road all the way through), but I did listen to this album a few times this weekend and its really solid. The features kinda bring it down, IMHO, but I understand why they are there.

.

The only tune I can't get into is One Of Me.

if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

the music's solid but not my coffee

But I'm fascinated by the presentation and his persona. I'd say this is the closest anyone's come to the kind of impact and effect of Prince in the 80s.

Madonna and Gaga and others have done the provocation and using sex for promotion, but his combination of clothes, image, videos, personal story, lyrics, music and the way it's all carefuly constructed are seriously bringing back memories. It's the combination of "look at me", "don't give a f", ego and vulnerability, sexual provocation and emotional honesty, glamour but so over the top its verging on ugly which is why its cool, messing with societal norms for shock value but not as an end but to shake up and question values and to push positivity and change.

And the impact he's having is parallel to those three if not surpassing them.

Janelle is the only one who's done something similar but unfortunately hasnt had the impact she should have.

His provocatuer game is right up there with Madonna's.

He’s a talented kid for sure, and has potential for longevity if he remains focused. I’m not a fan of his music, but I love that he’s ruffling hypocrites’ feathers. I’ll tell you this much though, I probably will keep my ears peeled if he & Tyler The Creator - who I think is one of the best producers of our time - collaborate on a whole album together.
