NEW: Silk Sonic song

VIDEO

Bruno & Anderson's project Silk Sonic released a new song and video, "Skate."

Where's the dang album?!

Lyrics:

In a room full of dimes you would be 100 dollars

If being fine was a crime, girl, they’d lock your lil’ fine ass up in a tower

The way you move like you do

Ooh it’s like you do it for a livin’

Do a lil’ spin, do it again – sshhiiiii

look like you playin’ for the win, OH BABY

I’m trynna roll, I’m trynna ride

I’m trynna float, I’m trynna glide

No no, don’t be shy, just take my hand and hold on tight

Oh, skate to me baby

Skate

Slide your way on over

Slide your way on over

Skate to me baby

Skate

I wanna get to know ya

I wanna get to know ya

Got your hair in the wind and your skin glistening

I can smell your sweet perfume

Mmmm, ya smell better than a barbecue

Oh, superstar is what you are

I’m your biggest fan

if you’re lookin’ for a man, suga, here I am

I’m trynna roll, I’m trynna ride

I’m trynna float, I’m trynna glide

No no, don’t be shy, just take my hand and hold on tight!

Oh, skate to me baby

Skate

Slide your way on over

Slide your way on over

Skate to me baby

Skate

I wanna get to know ya

I wanna get to know ya

I never fall but tonight you got me falling for you, and only you, YOU

I’m reaching out in hopes that you reach for me too, girl, let’s groove

Girl, you got me singing ooooooohhhh

My oh my

My oh my

My oh my

My oh my

Oh, skate to me baby

Skate

Slide your way on over

Slide your way on over

Skate to me baby

Skate

I wanna get to know ya

I wanna get to know ya

It's a fun dance track, but sounds more like an album track than a second single. Honestly "Leave the Door Open" has been so much of a great hit song that anything that would've followed it would've been underwhelming. Regardless, as much as LTDO is rooted in Philly soul, it still managed to sound fresh, delivery-wise, and that very catchy chorus. This on the other hand, it's just 70s soul/disco recycled, and I am a big freaking Bruno Mars fan. I'm more excited for his Disney project, because he's a phenomenal ballad songwriter and I believe he can write great Disney songs.

But something we gotta respect is that these two artists have managed to actually be a DUO and giving birth to a synergy independant of their names, this is Silk Sonic music and not Bruno's music or Anderson's music.

This album should have dropped months ago and we are just getting a second single?

Love it, great song again! Makes me feel happy. I don't mind the retro-ness of it, it is nice to actually hear real instruments and modulations in pop music again. Bring on that album, I say!

One of Bruno’s marketing strategies, he believes in this age of quick consumerism and singles-driven market an album rollout that’s extended over a long period could increase momentum and excitement for the project, which could backfire on them, people wanted a second single so bad two months ago but now I feel like they don’t care.

"Leave The Door Open" is gonna feel as old as the era it harkens to by the time an album drops. They already swept awards with that one single. Best new duo falloff

Really like this track. I'm usually a bit wary of artists being this unashamedly retro as I tend to prefer just going back and listening to the source material. But if all the songs on album are as good as this and LTDO I'll be happy. Although I hope Anderson Paak gets to inject some grit into the project at some point. At the moment we're still living a bit too much in Bruno's world and not enough in Anderson's - if they're going full 70's funk/soul lets have a couple of Ohio Players style funk bombs on the album with Anderson in control!

Why do you feel people don't care? They are already bored with Silk Sonic?

Not exactly bored, when LTDO was released people were so interested and hypnotized by that song and wanted more, for months, and I feel like the project isn't as hyped up as it was back then, and now the audiences are just happy they're back rather than thrilled. Plus if Skate is supposed to be a summer song it's kind of too late.

God, LTDO was such a jaw-dropping song this sounds so weak compared to it lol

If the general audience aren't tired of Drake or Maroon 5 yet, then this should have no problem. razz

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Exactly! I've been bored of Maroon 5 for a decade now. Nothing wrong with Bruno and Pak. It's fun music.

After It Wont Be Soon Belong Long or whatever that album was (that I was mildly obsessed with), I gave up on Maroon 5. They just got weird and not in a great way.

The only mild interest I had in them was the cover of Hands All Over. There was a great artist on Flickr at the time named Rosie. She had created a pic of herself in bed with various arms (all hers) around her. She used GIMP, instead of Photoshop, and was making amazing photos. Maroon 5 saw it and they commissioned her for the cover of their album. That's her on the cover.

Other than that, I didn't care anymore. "Sugar" is a mildly fun song, though.

Hell Stokley was supposed to drop Sankofa last year but it obviously got delayed because

of the pandemic. He promised a released date of April and July of this year and still haven't yet.

He just released a 4th single from the album last week. eek Don't know what the hell is taking him

so long. By the time he puts the album out we will have heard everything off the album. lol

Consider yourself lucky waiting on Silk Sonic. I dig Skate.

Don't laugh at my funk

I guess Skate is not getting a lot of pop airplay. It debuted on the Hot 100 at #14 last week and this week already dropped to #35. Leave The Door Open was #1 on the Hot 100 and is still at #14 this week. Skate is at #4 this week on the R&B/Hip Hop chart and #2 on the Adult R&B chart.

It might not go pop and that's okay. Back in the days, this album would have already dropped and you could gauge the enthusiasm with album sales, whether it needed more singles, etc.

They just need to drop the album already; it's been 5 doggone months lol

LTDO felt like a standalone till this track came and reminded me there was supposed to be an LP.

LTDO dropped March 5, 2021 which is almost half a year ago. It's gonna feel weird when it is March 2022 and they are still restricting singles.

Well, when a popular act today releases an album, all of the songs chart at one time since the singles chart now counts streaming. The songs that are not actual radio singles tend to drop off fast. That's how Drake, Lil Wayne, & Nicki Minaj got more hits than anyone else and in a shorter amount of time. Maybe Silk Sonic don't want that to happen, so are releasing songs individually. Lil Nas X hasn't released an album yet but his songs have been successful.

Back in the days, you had to wait until the singles dropped off before releasing the next album. Now we gotta wait for them all to tank before we get the album in the first place. lol
