You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yeah, I don't just like the hits only. I have The Monkees albums and the 1991 box set. I have the TV show and their movie Head on DVD. Even a 1982 picture disc with then previously unreleased songs and alternate versions of songs. Their last non-Christmas studio album Good Times! came out in 2016 and is good. It's Mike, Micky, & Peter and has a remix of a Davy led song from the 1960s. There's 4 different versions of the album. The regular one and 3 others, each featuring different extra songs. A Japan version, one for Target, and a vinyl version for Barnes & Noble. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

On a related note, Michael Nesmith is a producer on Lionel Richie's All Night Long music video. Paul copied Little Richard. There's also George's Indian songs. Their early albums are full of R&B covers. My Sweet Lord is He's So Fine. Many of those British Invasion acts copied Black American blues singers and R&B groups. They've even said so. They were created for a TV show. Basically a spoof of the Beatles. But they had some good songwriters and became kind of legitimate.

The producers created the idea for the show before The Beatles were even known. They based it on the Marx Brothers. When The Fab 4 became a huge success in the USA, then NBC made a pilot on it. Their first single came out several months before the show was even broadcast. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Interesting. I think of the Monkees' antics as similar to what you see in Beatles movies, but I suppose both groups owe a lot to the Marx bros.

Paul McCartney posted this on Instagram in May 2020 when Little Richard passed:
'From 'Tutti Frutti' to 'Long Tall Sally' to 'Good Golly, Miss Molly' to 'Lucille', Little Richard came screaming into my life when I was a teenager. I owe a lot of what I do to Little Richard and his style; and he knew it. He would say, "I taught Paul everything he knows". I had to admit he was right. In the early days of The Beatles we played with Richard in Hamburg and got to know him. He would let us hang out in his dressing room and we were witness to his pre-show rituals, with his head under a towel over a bowl of steaming hot water he would suddenly lift his head up to the mirror and say, "I can’t help it cos I’m so beautiful". And he was. A great man with a lovely sense of humour and someone who will be missed by the rock and roll community and many more. I thank him for all he taught me and the kindness he showed by letting me be his friend. Goodbye Richard and a-wop-bop-a-loo-bop.' If you're into country music, The First National Band records are pretty good. Nez was doing country rock songs in The Monkees years before Eagles existed. About 3 or 4 years ago, the show was restored into 4K & put on Blu Ray. I didn't get it because Rhino/Warner Brothers was selling it for $200, probably because it was in some fancy "limited edition" 3D box. The show was only 2 seasons. That's too much money for that, even though it looks way better than the older DVD set. They uploaded samples of the restoration on Youtube. I think the DVDs used VHS era masters. I don't think most people interested in this care about the box, they should have just put it in a regular case and sold it for $40 or so. I heard that the Fats Domino, Little Richard, & Jerry Lee Lewis part of the 33 1/3 special was removed on the Blu Ray because of song rights issues or using the singers images were too expensive or something like that. It's not cut on the DVD. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
