What's worse, That's What Friends are For or Ebony and Ivory! Talented people doing dreck, why lord? I'd say Ebony since at least the other tune is decent, from a dreck standpoint. Song is white as shit. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I agree. Ebony & Ivory has always been too syrupy for me. I've always been a sucker for songs about friendship so I always liked "That's What Friends Are For". "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I happen to like both, but prefer That's what friends are for.... oddly enough I listened to that one just some days ago... the first time in ages. [Edited 5/6/21 10:55am]

i kinda like both too! But I would go with Thats What Friends Are For if only for that Gladys Knight section at the end She kills it!

Ebony and Ivory since Gladys isn't on it. Anything Gladys is on is a gem. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

Well I tend to call myself seriously belting out, that's what friends are for, on many occasions. Not so for ebony and ivory. Time keeps on slipping into the future...

I never liked "Ebony and Ivory." It's too scripted and schmaltzy. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Not a fan of ebony and ivory

Although I don't like both songs I agree with this answer here. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

"Ebony & Ivory" was complete trash in every way imaginable, and for several reasons... "Thats What Friends Are For" was a weak song, but well executed...Gladys Knight, Elton John, Dionne Warwick & Stevie Wonder are 4 of the greatest singers ever, so even with such a basic track, they were still able to shine...no contest IMO...E&I is easily the worst song of the 2 [Edited 5/6/21 19:08pm]

That’s What Friends Are For I actually really enjoy. Always have since I was a little kid, I remember hearing it in the late 80s and early 90s in the movies before the show started, and in the grocery stores. Makes me nostalgic.
But I especially love the live version with Dionne, Stevie, Whitney and Luther. I love Gladys Knight and Elton John, but the live version just knocked it out of the park. [Edited 11/21/21 19:09pm]

That was the one at the Grammys, right? Yeah. Thaz was the first time I heard that song and loved it. Haven't seen that one in over 20 years though. Need to check that out soon.

This is actually a remake. It was first released by Rod Stewart in 1982. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I love the video for “That’s What Friends Are For”.Dionne has the biggest smile on her face. You can tell that this project meant a lot to her Gladys delivers a wonderfully soulful vocal.

Was always hoping this would reissue on CD because of the live version of Chaka's "Everlasting Love", which was deleted from the "Stompin At the Savoy" album. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! Ebony and Ivory was godawful. That's What Friends Are For was cheesy but fun and for a good cause.

I don't mind Ebony and Ivory (it is what it is). I think That's what Friends are For better, better arrangement with some nice chords to play on the piano. You have Stevie Wonder on both (Stevie plays the harmonica (beautifully) and sings on TWFAF). and Elton John etc.

Love the message on ebony and ivory, can handle the syrupyness. Always will be optimistic for a world where color difference is acknowledged where required (medically or for cosmetics) but entirely irrelevant otherwise. Plus I like to sing it when it's on the radio.. Tragic karaoke I know. [Edited 5/8/21 14:59pm]
