That is exactly what he was, a powerhouse vocally.


Technically prince could sing for sure, but a powerhouse vocally he newer was. Listen to his records and live performances...example.. (beautiful strange, dorothy parker...there are so many to choose from. this aint powehouse vocals..

His voice was much better LIVE than in studio.
The First avenue 1983 show is a great example.His voice was a powerhouse that night especially.
His vocals are great on the studio version of somewhere here on earth too.

funny you say that, because when Black and White came out as a single, I thought it almost sounded like a more pop bubble gum version of the mode of Alphabet St doubled up and arranged more generic or crowd pleasing.

Ooh, i absolutely agree too.

When I heard it, it felt that the guitar lick lacked potential.

Too much and too loud and repetitive, very thin. Bill Bottrell actualy tried to lift the song.

(I think it's evne not one of his 20 best tracks.)

It felt like a complete Prince rip off to me at first.

I always found Prince the king of 'two-chord' (even 'one-chord') songs and he knew how to make those sparse songs so appealing and musically full-sounding.

You didn't even noticed they were just one-chord songs ets.

Prince also had the talent to put space in his songs.

He said that once iirc, 'funk & space'... but I can't remember it right now.

But when i read that, i thought 'yeah, that's truely it'.

MJ was a limited but talented vocalist.

No doubt. You can't elevate Prince or MJ for that matter over those vocal monsters. But it doesn't really matter that much. How many have you seen on the Voice that sing better than established artists? A gizillion. So I guess it's not only the vocals what makes you great.

The only Official BAD concert that's available on dvd.I am thinking it's the One at Wembley stadium?
It is hard to understand him when he singing on fast songs like "working day and night" or "this place hotel" but I guess it's hard to hit every note when your too busy dancing and grabbing your crotch over and over

Just listening to somewhere over headphones...dont like the vocals...he almost whispers the lyrics , very thin. Its like the mic-gain is up to 100% to catch every whisper...

Been listening to his live concert from 1999 se few days ago, hmm, vocals are not better than on record....on the purple rain tour (the one dvd from pr se). His vocals on this one are average at best (nothing special)...
I know he can do it better, there are few examples where he really nails it...
