Madonna - You Can Dance Vs. Jody Watley - You Wanna Dance With Me?

Which do you feel is the better remix album? Both came out around the same time.

Madonna-You Can Dance (Released on Nov.27,1987)

Track listing;

1. "Spotlight"
2. "Holiday"
3. "Everybody"
4. "Physical Attraction"
5. "Over and Over"
6. "Into the Groove"
7. "Where's the Party"

Jody Watley-You Wanna Dance With Me? (Released on Nov.14,1989)

Track listing:

1. "Still a Thrill"
2. "Friends"
3. "Looking for a New Love"
4. "Real Love"
5. "L.O.V.E.R."
6. "What'cha Gonna Do for Me"
7. "Don't You Want Me"
8. "Most of All"
9. "Some Kind of Lover"

While I love Jody Watley, I just think her remix album is not very good. Aside from Friends the rest of the album is kind of disappointing. Love the original versions of these song but I think Madonna's album just kicks ass from top to bottom plus the addition of a new really good song Spotlight takes it for me.

Around the same time? That's two full years apart. And let's remember, music was changing, a lot, in the late 80s. Jody was more in touch with the sound of the moment. A bigger reverb, bigger vocals, new drum machines and keyboards to be utilized. Those were the days of Taylor Dayne with that new wall of sound, and schmaltz like Will To Power and the big single from Dirty Dancing.

However, Madonna's music was classic New York dance pop music. And they mixed so well together, plus the joy of "Spotlight." Your recent thread that's still open about You Can Dance.

Pick a song from 1986, then pick another from 1989 and see how much they're alike. (Plot twist: they're not.) The top song of 1986 was "That's What Friends Are For" by Dionne and friends with "Say You Say Me" from Lionel Richie in second place.

1989? Chicago - "Look Away" with Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" in a close second. Those male-female duets - Will To Power, Boy Meets Girl - all over the place, plus new boy band New Kids On the Block making moves. Paula Abdul, Milli Vanilli, etc. That's not stuff you'd hear in 1986.

My point? For me, it's apples and oranges. They're two different sounds, styles, and periods in music.

Have you heard both of these specific dance remix albums. They're very similar in style and sound but one I feel does it better. I'm not comparing That's What Friends Are For. This is how I'm comparing the two... taken from Wikipedia:

"remixing was still a new concept and technology, by which a particular vocal phrase could be endlessly copied, repeated, chopped up, transposed up and down in pitch and give them more echo, reverberation, treble or bass."

Both albums do this and are very similar in that way but one I feel nails it while the other one is a bit of a mess.

Never heard Madonna's Remix album. I use Jody's as part of my work out routine regularly. Love it!

Listening to both albums again this morning, I think my problem with Jody's remix album is it's a little overdone with the overdubs. Madonna's album just flows better if that makes any sense. Real Love, Don't You Want Me and Most of All 's remixes have grown on me though.

Check the thread I linked in my earlier reply. I reformatted True Blue to include "Spotlight," and took out a couple of duds. I put it on in the car and my friend said, "Is this a different version?" I said, "it's my version of the album." He really loves TB, and enjoyed the newer playlist immensely.

I pulled up "Spotlight" in Cool Edit Pro and put a fade on it so it felt more like a real song for an album (opposed to the segue into another song like on You Can Dance).

I have the Single Edits (unsegued) version of You Can Dance razz

And You Wanna Dance With Me on vinyl razz

Definitely apples and oranges. If you have Jody's 12" singles too you will notice you have those mixes already.
