Wow. You got a pretty warped perception. Way off. On both counts. And I'm in Europe too. And really? Is this a competition??

[Edited 2/2/21 2:04am]

Like I said i'm a huge fan of both and don't do these bullshit comparisons between two completely different artists but the topic is just that.
My perception isn't warped as someone who obsesively followeed any and everything regarding MJ's death when it happend and same for Prince. Prince is stll being discussed frequently MJ isn't and when he is being discussd it's usually tainted with BS pedo assumptions.

Apparantly it is, when you think that Prince is excessively and noticeably more discussed after death than MJ. Both get their mentions, when there is something worth mentioning, with it not being lopsided either way. Where is Prince being frequently discussed, except here??

I still frequently hear or see a Prince mention (by other artists or whoever) on TV shows, articles, music programs and sadly I see or hear none of that regarding MJ and whenever he does get a mention it's about BS pedo shit and not about his impact or artistry like with Prince.
It;s just what I see and if you think that is warped then that's not my fault. The Media is fucked up like that.

I don't care about opportunistic celebrities, who are afraid to mention Michael's name because after LN, they are afraid, that they might piss off some of their fans. In day to day life, on the radio and so on Michael's name and music is still more frequently mentioned/played than Prince. It's been (at least it feels like) years, since I heard a Prince song on the radio, whereas Michael gets played daily.

Well that really depends on what station you listen to I guess, cos here in Holland it's the opposite.
Ever since he died and that LN BS I hardly ever hear MJ anymore on the radio and ever since Prince died I hear more and more non-hits being played on the radio.
All in all it is indeed no competition but the OP seems to think Prince is in some nonexistent shadow of MJ when no one even mentions MJ when Prince is discussed.
I do understand that Prince may have a broader appeal among the music industry given he played a lot of instruments and dabbled in a lot of genres and gets much respect from all the musician mags like Guitar mag or Bass Player mag.
It is what it is. I love em both but I really think a comparison between them is just weird; one is a solid entertainer and the other is also a multi-instrumentalist who did more on his albums than MJ ever did. Apples and oranges.

It really does depend on what radio station you listen to AND where you live. I hear MJ every day on the station I listen to. I also read or hear other celebrities mentioning him frequently in interviews, Twitter, etc. I never see Prince mentioned with the same frequency. Michael gets MUCH respect from those
people who mention him-celebrities, entertainers, producers, musicians, etc. of course Prince gets a lot of respect, also. However, some of you on this org. Evidently are in your own little bubble or think that YOUR surroundings represent the whole world. I can tell you that it doesn’t. Michael’s influence has never waivered, even with the media inspired shit and false allegations, with the people who ACTUALLY matter. No one gives a crap about magazines like Guitar or others in that category. They have NEVER liked Michael because of that arrogant “rock mentality”. You can bet if Prince was not a guitarist, they wouldn’t have given a shit about him either. That’s just the mentality of these “rock” critics, magazines, etc. They have always had that arrogant attitude as if THEIR critique defines what the MAJORITY of people think. IMO, these people represent a niche audience.
Finally, I don’t know of ANY OTHER person who went through the lies, conspiracy, media manipulation, fake allegations that MJ did and STILL survived with his career basically NOT destroyed. Name me one artist/celebrity who went through what MJ did and their career was not destroyed. You can’t name a single person.
There were some Fans of OTHER artists who were jumping with glee and pissing all over themselves when the fake allegations surfaced. These people were actually HOPING that Michael’s career would be destroyed. For some strange reason, these people have and STILL are threatened by Michael and his career, influence, success, etc. I don’t understand that type of immature and pathetic behavior. I don’t think that way and neither does anyone in my family, or even close friends. How sad is it to envy or dislike a person so much that you want to destroy them, in order to build up your favorite artist. Those type of things are not fathomable to me. It’s truly sick.

There were people like that bitch Oprah who THOUGHT that her participation in LN would destroy Michael. It didn’t. Each time these contrived conspiracies happened, Michael’s fan base grew stronger. Of course, you had those “weak-minded fans” who left. They were never strong enough to be MJ fans anyway. Sorry, you can’t be weak and be a Michael Jackson fan. NO FAN BASE HAS EVER HAD TO GO THROUGH WHAT WE HAVE. Btw, I used all capital letters for emphasis, not “screaming” as some of you ‘sensitive’ posters may assert.Bottomline, even in death, Michael is STILL influential, respected, successful and LOVED. Trying to diminish those things will not cause your favorites to be elevated any more.😎

Don;t get it twisted. I'm not British or American. Living in a bubble thinking they are the center of the world is there department. I'm Dutch and so am capable in understanding multiple languages of the countries around me. I read, hear and see (news) articles from all countries.

Same can be said about magazines or so called people that matter who praise them. there opinion isn't more important than that of anyone else. But that;s not the point I'm making.

I fully agree with this and nobody said anythig about MJ not being influential, respected, successful and LOVED. I just don;t see it as much anymore in the media as with Prince these days.
I left the MJ fanbase years ago because of the ignorance, arrogance and blind following without anything to back it up and auto dismissal of everything Prince. It seems to me there's this underlying insecurity that boils up among a lot of vocal MJ fans whenever Prince is mentioned shrug
Please remember that this not some attack or something and besides in the end it isn;'t important or earth shattering. Like most sane minded fans I still listen to both and enjoy them both equally.

I have never met a musician in my life that said he was influenced by Michael Jackson.

When I say musician, I am NOT talking about dancers and singers, I'm talking about folks who play instruments. Rarely have a met one that wasn't influenced by Prince and who was glad 2 talk about it.

Influence goes beyond sharing similar skill sets but yeah, why would the average instrumentalist cite someone who wasn't known for playing instruments as their main influence?

That said, who even claimed that countless musicians cited MJ as an influence?

Right. As if almost every instrument playing musician really is influenced by Prince. I think you're hard pressed you find many rock musicians, who really are influenced by Prince. Appreciating him, yes. Acknowledging that he was more than a singer, yes. But really influenced?? Don't think so. Unless you talk about pop/rnb/funk musicians, which arguably is not the big group of musicians.

What you are saying doesn’t make sense. Although, Michael was not an instrumentalist, he was a musician. Every song that he wrote was fully composed with the instrumental parts as well as lyrics. This according to people who worked with him. Some of you CONVENIENTLY try to diminish the FACT that not only was Michael a singer and dancer, he was a SONGWRITER who actually wrote-music AND lyrics- some of his BIGGEST hits. It pisses the hell out of me when idiots try to put Michael in the category of JUST being a singer and dancer. It’s not only a lie, it’s pathetically ignorant. Michael has written some songs-solely ON HIS OWN, that I would put up against ANYONE, including your favorite. I can think of and name at least 30 songs that were written, not co-written, solely by MJ.

Some of you need to do your research and stop depending your OPINIONS and what you WANT to be true. 😒

I really don't like these threads as they just bait people. Most of us are grown ass adults who can be fans of both artist but you always get these "stans" and "us versus them" types in these threads. It happens on the MJ forums too, although mostly its shut down and MJ fans either don't care about Prince or think he is great too.

.

Most of the ones starting this shit are young and/or immature or just seeking attention by starting some shit and setting it off.

.

My answer is Prince was never in his shadow. Both were talented in their own ways and the only similarities they really had, was that both were child prodigies, black, had huge success amongst white people and from the midwest. Lazy journalists often lumped them together as they were big in the same era and both were perceived as "weird" by the ignorant masses.

.

I wish these types of threads would stop as they cause scrapping, anger, bring out the "Who is best" types and mods may get angry with too many threads on one artist (MJ had been stickied for years due to the number of "Best MJ song off Dangerous" and "Who is better Prince or Michael" etc). George Michael threads are heading that same way.

.

They should rephrase it. "Another nonsense thread for childish people to compare apples with oranges" lol

I got plenty good loving for ya baby

Buckethead, one of the greatest, diverse and prolific guitarists, has consistently cited MJ as a direct influence since the beginning of his career.

His fans used to sort of question whether he was being serious or not, then he released an emotive tribute single almost immediately after MJ's passing, has done countless live covers since:

The pop phenomenon dimension of Michael Jackson's career overshadows any damn thing out there. Michael Jackson as a pop icon is bigger than the Pope, and that is no exaggeration. Mind you, I'm taking about instant recognition. I'm talking about Google crashing when this dude passed. I'm talking about your memorial being one of the most watched in history next to those of Lady Di and Reagan. I'm talking about your death getting so much coverage that people started complaining about it. All of this after two child molestation scandals. That is unprecedented. So yeah, Michael Jackson, in that sense, can overshadows anyone.

As an artist, there's a lot of people whose canon is more impressive than his. I think Michael as a song-and -dance man had a level of involvement in the making of his music that went beyond what most song-and-dance men can do. But Prince could do it all, so he dwarfs MJ in that way. This is one not to say that one is better than the other. It is what it is. At the end of the day, it comes to personal preferences.

Sometimes, I think there's a certain unfairness in elevating whoever over MJ and not stopping to think how many people could have done and can do what he did with the tools he was given.

And if you disagree then the various lobes of your brain don't make sufficient connections.
