disco never sucked... 'disco sucks' was a racist catchphrase and movement, started by white people who were not fans of the sudden proliferation of dance music that had taken over the entertainment industry

If that's true, then why did even James Brown and George Clinton say that they didn't like disco?
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

because it was direct competition and it was the new thang that preceded the end of BOTH their kingdoms
... disco, once it was monetized and commercialized by the mainstream, was the end of the funk & big r&b band era... just like hiphop did to mainstream r&b in later years...of course JB and George were hatin

shit, Maurice White (Earth Wind & Fire) talked shit about disco too, but then he conformed and then won a Grammy in 1979 with "Boogie Wonderland"..and got called a sellout for that song... but "Disco Sucks" was a provocative racist catchphrase that would cause fights in school.. it even caused a riot in Chicago at a WhiteSox vs Yankees game...blacks and hispanics wasnt walkin around saying that shit...we knew what it was and what it meant

Years later GC went on record to say he was just messing with it, he really did like it. For me, just like any other genres there's some good ones and some not so good.

A lot of the stuff that was called disco was really R&B & funk. Like Disco Lady is not really disco at all, even though it's in the title. Even a song like Black Betty by Ram Jam has been on disco compilations. The remix & the 12" maxi single originated from disco. The 12" single could have longer songs than a 7" 45. A song could be spread out over the 12 inches. So the sound quality would be better than a 45 or even the same song on an album, where it had to share space with a bunch of other songs They could pump up the bass more than they could on an album, which was good for people dancing in a club and had expensive sound systems.

It never did, my guess is this came about as the quality of some songs declined as disco became overexposed in 1979. I keep reading these comments by experts as they put it who say it was great up to 1977/78 and then people like Rod Stewart, Ethel Merman, Kiss and the Rolling Stones did disco songs and the genre became played out.

Also the July 1979 Disco Demolition derby which was really just some rednecks getting angry over radio stations becoming all disco formats. It also exposed deeply held racism and homophobia by many people at the time and disco was seen as a music produced and upheld by African Americans and Gay men.

Some songs were also lazily produced and some were truly awful (Ethel Merman, Kiss and Leif Garrett etc), but every genre will have it's "bad" songs!

I got plenty good loving for ya baby

I can't remeber what else is on the JB record but I thought the title track always jammed a bit. The JB's had an obscure disco-oriented record out about that same time called "Groove Machine". I didn't discover it until fairly recently but enjoyed that whole album.

I think disco has stood the test of time and is well regarded now. Jessie Ware, Dua Lipa, Kylie Minogue and Roisin Murphy all released albums heavily indebted to disco last year to plenty of acclaim both critical and commercial.
