Joni Mitchell is likely in the top ten as a singer-songwriter. I'm not certain if Prince felt he was quite on par with her. He had mad respect for her.

She crossed genres as well and played with some of the greats, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus,

Jaco Pastorius (Bass), Chick Correa, Wayne Shorter etc.

If we are talking about the most talented female artist, she at least needs to have written her own lyrics/music and be respected by the greats.

Do you think Madonna is on par with Joni Mitchell? I do.

Sorry, but there is no comparison.

Joni is in rarefied air.

If I had to pick someone over Mariah, Aretha is definitely a great voice. Really love her voice but don’t feel like I know enough of her songs
Madonna has 10 octaves.

Janet Jackson

Also one of my favourites of all time. I know people criticize her voice, but I find it so soothing and she’s always heavily involved in the writing process and can really dance

Britney Spears was a much better natural singing talent than both Madonna and Janet Jackson before signing with Jive records (and probably a little bit at the beginning of career too.)

And the fact that Britney Spears is objectively a better songwriter than Beyonce Knowles is just as notable...

Madonna is not strong vocally.

Something I forgot to mention is that to be considered the 'best' one needs to be an innovator, which Joni was.

She is ranked higher than Prince and I think he would agree. They both were extremely talented but Joni was an innovator, Prince was more of a 'blender' of existing genres.

Awesome. What was Janet like?
The first time we met during velvet rope era, she passed by us at the studio where she was recording an interview, and when she walked by, my cousin and I stood up and she shook our hands smiling and security told us to sit down Then during rockwitchu tour, my bff and I were vip and got to watch her do sound chdck, and several of us in the crowd including my friend and I got backstage passes to meet her. She got a photo with us and then I called out, I love you and she turned around, smiled and said I love you too and I was in awe! [Edited 11/10/20 20:42pm] [Edited 11/10/20 20:43pm]

Hey Hollywood, do you feel madonnas ray or light Grammys were well deserved, or would you say another album/era deserved them more? Would love to hear your thoughts

"The Girls in the Band" is a great movie that features some very talented female instrumentalists.

I'll link to the trailer which features a quote from jazz critic George Simon:

"Only God can make a tree, and only men can play good jazz."

The movie does a great job of showing what a fool Mr. Simon was. I bet Prince would have really dug this movie...even if Patrice Rushen wasn't in it.

Alpha, I also have to add that I loved Lauryn Hill's album so I was rooting for both her and Madonna at the Grammys that year.

Not sure if dancers are considered a subject of Music: Non-Prince (or Prince: Music..., for that matter : ) ).

Figure they may be, as the vast majority of dance is intertwined with music.

Anyway, I'm tickled to see that today's Google doodle celebrates the artistry of Maria Tallchief.

“From your first plié you are learning to become an artist. In every sense of the word you are poetry in motion. And if you are fortunate enough...you are actually the music.”

—Maria Tallchief

In honor of Native American Heritage Month in the U.S., today’s video Doodle—created in partnership with Native American guest artists Lydia Cheshewalla, Chris Pappan, and Yatika Starr Fields— celebrates Maria Tallchief, member of the Osage Nation who was America’s first, major prima ballerina. Not only a trailblazer for Native American dancers, Tallchief is widely considered one of the country’s most influential ballerinas of all time. On this day in 2007, a bronze sculpture of Tallchief and four other Native American ballerinas was unveiled in Oklahoma at the Tulsa Historical Society in a piece titled “The Five Moons” by artist Gary Henson."

I'm embarrassed to say but I'd forgotten about Lady T. She would definitely qualify.
