The only Prince songs I'd be embarrassed about are his rap songs. But that's only because they're awful ๐Ÿ˜‚

Well there's that.

I can't listen to "Sister" on the regular. I like the live version from "Lovesexy" but otherwise it's creepy.

I would never listen to "Lady Cab Driver" in front of my mom, and that's the apex of purity next to Cardi B's "WAP".

I do indeed remember being embarrassed to listen to some Prince songs in front of my parents, but of course that was during a time when people actually had morals and showed their parents and others respect.

I had to fight to listen to most anything, especially Prince. My mother hated Prince. HATED him. She didn't mind Michael Jackson too much, but she saw Prince as full on dangerous and unseemly. She tore posters off my walls and threatened to throw away every record. I hid them. She either didn't look under my bed, or didn't care on another level. But I had to hide listening to Prince, but I was never embarrassed or ashamed of it. I never strayed from loving everything I heard from Prince.

Our church did this whole anti-rock music thing one evening. They played "DMSR" and "Let's Pretend We're Married" while passing around the cover and sleeve. The church had an amazing sound system, so I was jamming out to both songs. "Notice the long intro. The beat is what gets 'em." As if kids are somehow hypnotized by a drum beat. (When exactly do children snap out of being hypnotized to being mindless oppressive church drones?) So that night, it was hell coming home from church. That's when the posters were torn down, etc.

Years later, I bought every one of those posters again on eBay, and told my mom about it. "Well, I don't know why." "Because they were mine to begin with, and they're mind to end with." One of them was the white window poster from 1984. I loved that poster, and have it framed now.

The irony is this: my mother died on April 21, 2012. Prince died on the same date 4 years later. I texted my brother that day and said, "imagine the look on mom's face when Prince showed up this morning." He said, "I thought the same thing."

The only reason I may have felt secretive over him around parents could have been because I thought he was kind of fly, and older than both of them and I wanted to keep the love to myself for a little bit, but theyโ€™re the ones who got me into him during purple rain so really thereโ€™s nothing to hide. Thanks so to them I had the I would die for you and when doves cry videos on cassette when I was a kid

So many threads here about this song, I actually listened 2 that WAP song n think it's OK lol. Won't be playing it for my mom oc nuts. As 4 mamas, mine (like most of them in these videos) can't stand that P word from song title. I turn my tunes down 4 that 1 out of respect lol. Only time I can remember turning down Prince (me n Mom is close so she's heard probably his whole discography thanks 2 me mr.green) n I still do is that second verse of SuperFunky. A lil 2 freaky. I can't recall playing P Control 4 her, woulda been a travesty hmmm. The B Sides disc got me chewed out bitd, with Feel U Up, Scarlet Pussy n La La La. Feel U Up I couldn't hide, but the other 2 I was like he's talking about a cat n got hmph!. She loves SAIMH tho smile.
For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Also, why is this on the music forum when itโ€™s clearly a prince topic?

It's more precisely a WAP topic.

My mother doesn't speak nor she understands english so I got no problem,be that as it may, from time to time I do explain to her what some of his songs are about and she knows he's very sexually explicit and she's ok with that.

I only listened to the Prince songs that were played on the radio when I was a kid. I started to buy Prince albums when I was 16.5 years old(June).

Great memories! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’ฟ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽธ๐Ÿ’ฟโญ๐Ÿ””๐Ÿ’ฟ

I have to buy all of the Prince Concerts on DVD.

I never went to a Prince concert or any concert for that matter! I have been deprived of many things over the years! On top of that, I do not drive, do not know how to drive. Even the train station is not in walking distance to where I live/lived/grew up for the last 37 years!!

Prince is for teenagers and adults who are still 28 years old (+body aging).

PKids shouldn't listen to Prince. Kids shouldn't listen to pop music, tbw.

If you are teenager and your superconservative father is ashamed of Prince, perhaps you should tell him "maybe I could teach you how to fuck, after all"...

My mom was a Prince fan almost as long as me(the beginning), so i never really had that problem. As far as WAP? i would never voluntarily listen to that song again, let alone play it for my mother, if she was still alive. WAP has zero value to me.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

For long I was afraid of listening to Letoya bc I knew she was very avant garde and my parents would never understand her. Fortunately they're fans now too and we have our very own Church of Letoya at home. She's the one and only Pope Of Pop. #EatItHaters

Embarrassed isn't the word. It was never discussed or known. However it was a pleasant surprise to find out decades later my aunt was into Prince and I got to take her to 2 Prince concerts which we enjoyed a lot.

I don't have to hide my music heroes. I play them via Apple TV when the family gathers. It's good music. smile
