Lesser-known facts about Eddie Van Halen's achievementsBy Giulia Heyward and Saeed Ahmed, CNN 20 mins ago

Kelly, McSally face off in feisty Arizona Senate debate: Trump, McCain...

Netflix indicted in Texas over 'lewd' depiction of children in 'Cuties'

Lesser-known facts about Eddie Van Halen's achievements

Even in the decadent 80s, known for its over-the-top guitar shredding and showmanship, Eddie Van Halen was a towering presence.

Yes, he was just as flashy as the rest of his big-haired brethren, but he was by no means a flash in the pan.

His fingers didn't just run up and down the fretboard, they sprinted.

And when he played triplets on the iconic "Eruption" -- using both hands to tap the notes -- it was a clear message to all other members of the Club of Lightning Fast Guitar Solos: Beat it...

He got his start on the piano and drums

Although Van Halen will forever be known for his virtuoso guitar playing, he got his start with a different instrument. Along with his older brother, Van Halen received piano lessons at an early age. For three years, he won first place at an annual piano competition in California, starting in 1964.

After his brother, Alex, switched to the guitar, Van Halen bought a drum kit. But his natural talent with the guitar prompted his brother to ask them to switch again.

According to the Eddie Van Halen Birthday Special newsletter: "When Alex started to then learn to play drums, overtaking Eddie's own abilities, the younger of the two switched to guitar instantly becoming attached to it -- locking himself away in his bedroom as a teen to practice, and walking around the house with his guitar strapped on yet unplugged."...

The two brothers would form the core of what would later become Van Halen -- through four turbulent decades of platinum albums, sold out tours and a revolving door of singers.

He's never been able to read music

Van Halen learned everything he knows from observing other musicians.

In one interview, he talked about how he'd improvise during piano recitals.

"Ninety percent of the things that I do on guitar, if I had taken lessons and learned to play by the book, I would not play at all the way I do," he once said.

He's named after another legendary musician

Originally from Amsterdam, Van Halen's Dutch parents named him Edward Lodewijk van Halen; it's a nod to the famous composer, Beethoven.

As biographer Kevin Dodds writes: "Edward Lodewijk Van Halen followed on January 26, 1995 (his music obsessed father naming the future prodigy after Ludwig van Beethoven)."

He had an initially uncredited role on Michael Jackson's 'Beat It'

His band set a Guinness World Record

He holds several patents

He once used a power drill as an accompanying soundtrack

Yeah. I will always regret that I didn't make the effort to see them on their 2004 reunion tour, despite being in the US at the time. Glad I saw them in '93 and '95 though.

God, no. no. My favorite band.

They had the brown sound as they called it. They had a funk and a groove other loud bands did not. Unlike many bands who used the blues, they used a more boogie/R&B groove..

Some of their underrated tunes:

David Lee Roth Remembers Eddie Van Halen:
'What a Long Great Trip It's Been'
Ashley Boucher 11 hrs ago

.

David Lee Roth is remembering his bandmate Eddie Van Halen.

Roth shared a tribute to Van Halen on Twitter after his death from cancer Tuesday morning at the age of 65. The two rockers performed together for years in the band Van Halen.

"What a Long Great Trip It's Been.." Roth, 65, wrote on Twitter, sharing a black-and-white photo of the duo.

Bandmate Sammy Hagar — who took over as lead singer from Roth when he departed for the first time in 1985 — also shared his heartbreak with a tribute.

"Heartbroken and speechless. My love to the family," Hagar wrote on Twitter and Instagram, alongside a smiling photo of himself and Van Halen sitting together in what appears to be a private jet.

I loved Eddie's virtuoso guitar work-still do. Jump!

I read that his mother was Indonesian and that one of the

reasons they left the Netherlands? when he was 7-8 was that she was not

accepted there.

I bet Prince and Eddie respected each other.

Fans have been mourning the death of Eddie Van Halen by streaming and buying his band’s music en masse — so much so that two of their albums have already returned to the charts.

Van Halen’s self-titled debut, which ranks 27th on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time, enters the daily version of the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums Chart at Number 79. 1984, home to their massive, star-making blockbuster “Jump,” “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher,” enters the chart at Number 114. The RS 200 ranks the top albums of the week by album units, a number that combines digital and physical album sales, digital song sales, and audio streams using a custom weighting system. The chart is updated daily, with an official version of the chart publishing every Monday.

I liked it. Some of the songs were redone demos from the 70s/80s while the rest was new material. You can listen for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/w...dcGYEXnHTp

If you want the original 4, there were a couple of songs in the 1990s: We Wise Magic & Can't Get This Stuff No More. The 2012 album has Eddie's son Wolfgang on bass and not Michael Anthony.

Really amazed that so many different kinds of folk have tipped their hats and offered kind words. While I always knew VH were the rare type of band that seemed to transcend all kinds of barriers/genres, it's become abundantly clear to me just how vast and far-reaching their audience is. Maybe it's the timeless hooks, or the impeccable 3-part harmonies of DLR/Eddie/Michael Anthony. Perhaps maybe it's the iconic videos, or the Beat It solo. Whatever the case, this was a heavy metal band at the end of the day, and there's many instances where VH get pretty gnarly throughout those first 6 albums. But they also had soul, and hot damn could they fucking groove. Most, if not all of that came from Eddie, and that motherfucker had swag for days. What a unique, original and once-in-a-lifetime talent...much like his label mate and colleague Mr. Prince R. Nelson. Happy to say I got to see VH back in 2012 on the ADKOT tour at MSG with none other than Kool & The Gang as the opening act. Phenomenal show, the whole band seriously brought it that night. Losing EVH is quite a profound loss, but at least we were lucky and blessed enough to all bear witness. *Wings, Not Rings.

Eddie Van Halen endured a 'horrifying racist environment' before becoming a rock legend

Kimmy Yam
,
NBC NewsOctober 9, 2020

Music fans around the world are mourning the loss of iconic Van Halen rock star Eddie Van Halen. And while many today honor his legacy as one of the all-time greatest guitarists, fans are also highlighting past interviews describing his encounters with painful racism and discrimination because of his mixed race in his early years.

Van Halen, who died Tuesday of throat cancer at 65, was the son of Dutch and Indonesian immigrants and spent his childhood in the Netherlands. His former bandmate David Lee Roth, a fellow rock superstar, once revealed on the podcast "WTF with Marc Maron" just how painful the experience was for the young Van Halen and his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen.

In the 2019 interview, Roth described how poorly the Van Halens' parents were treated because of their mixed-race relationship in the 1950s.

"It was a big deal. Those homeboys grew up in a horrifying racist environment to where they actually had to leave the country," Roth said in the podcast.

He added that the brothers, who were often referred to as "half-breed" in the Netherlands, still met difficult circumstances after immigrating to the U.S.

"Then they came to America and did not speak English as a first language in the early '60s. Wow," Roth told Maron. "So that kind of sparking, that kind of stuff, that runs deep."

The brothers' mother, Eugenia, met their father, Jan, a traveling musician, in Indonesia when it was under Dutch rule. Shortly after World War II, the couple decided to move to the Netherlands, where the rock stars were born.

Eugenia was treated as a "second-class citizen," Van Halen said in an interview in 2017 with music journalist Denise Quan for Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. The family packed up and left for the U.S. in 1962, making the trek by boat for nine days, before settling in the Pasadena, California, area.

Their early days in the U.S. were difficult, Van Halen told Quan. The family lived in a house shared with two other families. While his mother worked as a maid, his father picked up a job as a janitor and also maintained a music career. The environment at the time wasn't particularly inviting to the young immigrants, and Van Halen described his first day of school as "absolutely frightening."

"We already went through that in Holland, you know, first day, first grade. Now, you're in a whole other country where you can't speak the language, and you know absolutely nothing about anything and it was beyond frightening," he said. "I don't even know how to explain but I think it made us stronger because you had to be."

He told Quan that the school he attended at the time was still segregated and that because he couldn't speak the language, he was considered a "minority" student.

"My first friends in America were Black," Eddie told the journalist. "It was actually the white people that were the bullies. They would tear up my homework and papers, make me eat playground sand, all those things, and the Black kids stuck up for me."

In spite of the racism and discrimination he faced, Van Halen told Quan that looking back on his life, he was grateful for his experience as an immigrant.

"Coming here with approximately $50 and a piano, not being able to speak the language, going through everything to get to where we are, if that's not the American dream, I don't know what is," he said in the interview.

Indonesian social media users have paid tribute to Van Halen, who's seen as a source of pride for many in the community.

Ashleigh Walters: Musician Eddie Van Halen left an enormous legacy behind in his passing this week. Former bassist for Metallica, Jason Newsted, called him a friend, but also a powerful influencer and masterful innovator in the world of music. Newsted told me about the first time he heard Van Halen's music at the age of 14, less than a decade before the two would be on tour together.
