A more apt title would be "500 albums we'll give credit to from artists we fawn over ad nauseam or are forced to begrudingly acknowledge due to popular demand." |

And finally it has happened: the Rolling Stone magazine is oficially dead.
The old grandpa, who always bragged about 65-85, the best era ever (and he was right), but who progressively embraced (some of the) '90s and even early '00s music (looking hip in the process) has finally died and at the helm there's a hipster millenial that downgrades the Beatles, banishes the prophet (Dylan) and vastly overrates 2000-2019 music.
RIP Rolling Stone magazine. [Edited 9/23/20 9:26am]

Not true if you take a moment to look at who voted
https://www.rollingstone....t-1062225/
It's a good snapshot of tastes in the general pop world of 2020, including some serious anomalies that would only appear in this year and no other.
My only major complaint would be how US-centric it is, but Rolling Stone is a US magazine so it makes sense.
As I said in the other thread, it's a thankless task.

Yeah I thought "wtf" at Harry Styles too.
lolol Also, THREE Fiona Apple albums and nothing by, say, Nick Cave. or Soundgarden. or ZZ Top. or Frank Zappa? or Thin Lizzy??
Personally i'm a bigger fan of Fiona than any of the above but come on now, this is just the big Fiona Apple push of 2020.

Yes, that stood out to me too.
Also, did I miss it, or were The Smiths nowhere to be found?

they tried too hard to show love to R&B and hiphop and ended up with some strange choices... im not mad at them for holding "Whats Goin On", "Purple Rain", and "It Takes A Nation of Millions", in high regard, tho.. |

10. Lauryn Hill - Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
17. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
19. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
these 3 lps have NO business being ranked that high... in no way shape or form... MBDTF isnt even Kanye's best LP, and its arguably his worst... Kendrick Lamar's lp is some fakely deep gibberish, spit by a dude that sounds like Black Bugs Bunny, over some fairly decent production.... Lauryn Hill has been overrated since Day 1 and has about 3 good songs over the course of her entire career...and these lps are ranked higher than any lps by Earth Wind & Fire?...or Prince? (besides P.R.)...or Rotary Connection?.. or Barry White?...or Ramsey Lewis?...or The Police?...or Nas?...or WuTang Clan?...or JayZ?...or Depeche Mode?...or Duncan Sheik?
GTFOH...who made this list, Bill Maher?...Jimmy Fallon?...Kim Kardashian?
in what world is MBDTF a better album than "Stone Jam" by Slave?
in what world is Miseducation of Lauryn Hill a better album than Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, by Elton John? |

So we decided to remake our greatest albums list from scratch. To do so, we received and tabulated Top 50 Albums lists from more than 300 artists, p...ry figures (from radio programmers to label heads, like Atlantic Records CEO Craig Kallman). The electorate includes Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish; rising artists like H.E.R., Tierra Whack, and Lindsey Jordan of Snail Mail; as well as veteran musicians, such as Adam Clayton and the Edge of U2, Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, Gene Simmons, and Stevie Nicks.
These 300 people can FALL FAST & DIE SLOW "We're not hitchhiking anymore!....we're riding!!" |

But doesn't this list and the one before that show that the whole "What are the best 500 albums of all time" lists/discussions is subjective, tho?
I mean, ask a group of people "what are, in your opinion, the best albums of all time? Cut it down to ten, maybe five." You'll see very different answers and you could argue the different points ad nauseam.
Hell take Prince.org as an example, people can't agree on his best album ever, let alone a top five. cause everybody's taste is different. Which is why some LOVE Rave, and some absolutely hate it. Such is life.

I applaued them for trying to be inclusinve, but I honestly think companies should stay away from these lists cuz everyone will always disagree. I'm fine with looking at Billboard's lists honestly. They have at least SOME form of accuracy and a way to measure which albums are higher and lower. I know I know it's only based on the popularity of the albums, but it's at least one sure way to measure them. |

None of the albums of 2000-2019 rival the classics from 1967-1991. And you know it. At least the actual list from 2004 made sense, despite the criticism of being dominated by caucasian male rockers.
Also, the order itself is incredibly stupid. They have placed 1995-2015 albums in the Top40 to appease the millenials. Millenial Stone Magazine. Kanye West (with 6 albums??? is he officially better than Public Enemy now?) and Taylor Swift are the worst offenders. None of the albums from Swift should be in the top500. By that logic, Come On Over by Twain should be in the Top20.
Anyway Tony, good to see you again. It's been a long time (I left the Internet after the double shock of 2016, Bowie-Prince RIP).

Sorry, but can't be mad over What's Going On being named #1. Incredible audio experience with lyrics just as pertinent today as they were when the album came out.
Picket Lines
And Picket Signs
Don't punish me
With brutality
Come on and talk to me
So you can see

Well, Rolling Stone was in dire need of some publicitiy and this gets some for them. No list will every satisfy most perople, nor should it. I am glad there is some really good music every year inluding the 2000s., and it should be represented in the chart. This doesn't mean that their choices would have necessarily been mine. |
