I thought this might be a good topic after I discovered this video of one of my favorite Gov't Mule songs in which Warren Haynes's seamlessly infuses parts of "When Doves Cry" into "Beautifully Broken." What are other Prince songs you have discovered that were included in other musical artists songs but not a cheap imitation? In other words, artists that gave a tribute to Prince by simply including Prince songs with their own material and not trying to be Prince but doing justice to his songs by making them part of their own... Hope I'm being clear.

Such a fine line here. You have samples like Hammer's "Pray" or Eve's "Irresistible Chick" that could be considered for the list.

American Idol contestant Blake Lewis used the "Erotic City" beat, without credit, on his song "She's Makin' Me Lose It." It's only a couple of beats, but franky the most recognizeable part of the drum pattern. It's also a very Prince-esque song.

Leela James samples the same section on her song "Damn Your Eyes." These feel like interploitations to me because while they are samples (as are all the examples, surely) the songs don't rely on them to exist.

Prince aside, I think Simply Red did a great interploitation into "Sunrise" of Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That." And they simply used the first verse, "easy, ready, willing, overtime, where does it stop where do you dare me to draw the line..."

Jay-Z & Beyonce's cover of 2Pac/Makaveli's "Me & My Girlfriend', and Beyonce starts singing part of the 2nd Verse of "If I Was Your Girlfriend"

sheeeit..."Pop Life" alone, was sampled by 2pac, big Daddy Kane and 50Cent...there are plenty of cases of Prince music being sampled by other artists... even unofficial mixtape releases and freestyles...Rapper/Producer Black Milk made a whole beat-tape ("Music From The Color Purple") of hiphop instrumentals made from Prince songs

I don't think it was officially a sample but whenever I listen to Mary J Blige's "The Love I Never Had", I hear a strong rememblance to Prince's "I Hate U".

That beat, even in the reverse order, was so popular it was all over the place. In Square Circle was released right in the hub of that beat becoming a trend. It reminds me how Soul II Soul, Lisa Stansfield, Enigma, Maxi Priest, The KLF, Shanice, and others used the same damn beat endlessly. While Stevie's is similar, I feel like "Housequake" is more definitive of what others were using. There is an opposite pattern used a lot as well. Literally, play the beats in the opposite order and it was just as popular.

Shit, let's be clear on this one. First, Prince sampled his own ass from For You's "Baby" for "I Hate U." Ms. Blige straight up uses it in her song. Oddly, Prince isn't credited. Also, Jam & Lewis wrote & produced that track. It's more of a rhythm though, and you can't copyright a drum track. BUT it does sound like a straight up sample or replay.

Cherrelle's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" seems 2 sample Prince's "1999" in its "da DA da...da DA da," but in a diff'rent key. Am I rite?

That's not a sample. A sample is a replayed portion of an original track into another track. That Cherrelle song is an original by Jam & Lewis. That's just the fat synth Minneapolis sound there, not a "1999" hijacking.
