Ray Of Light it's the best album along with LAP.

Ray of Light came out in the 80's? Missed that one.

From where I come from, yes it was released a couple of months soon after LAP.

I think she’s just generally saying it’s her personal favourite, no harm in that [Edited 8/2/20 18:06pm]

Ray of Light is too mature. It's like eating barbecue chicken with a knife and fork. Totally misses the point of Madonna.

Speaking of, I hate hate hate when she did Evita and started trying to sing "proper", anyone else? It totally ruined her voice. She started sounding old immediately after, before she had this angelic cutesy voice that just fit.

I’m glad she experimented with her voice, cause it kept her fresh

I guess she sounded like an old English lady, but eventually went back to her girlish voice

Yeah kind of. She was singing from her chest voice but had already started to on songs like you’ll see

I don’t mind that voice either but remember being a little bored with her during the evita era though that was short lived. I think she released some of her best albums while married, and of course the awesome madame x.

The debut all the way, the guys from
Mtume produced it, and Gwen Guthrie sings in the background. Couldn’t get better.

yes...Reggie Lucas from Mtume' is underrated and overlooked... he did great stuff with Madonna's debut lp, as well as lps by Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman and Mtume'...Madonna's 1st lp had ZERO filler...i loved her singing voice back then, too... it changed drastically over the years

Somehow I was unaware of the Mtume connection! It makes sense thinking about it, and I love the Mtume stuff I've heard with Reggie Lucas at the helm.

"I Know It" was the only song on her first album that wasnt in heavy rotation, and it still got airplay nonetheless... that was one of the few truly perfect albums in modern music history... its almost like i hold it against her, that she never made an album that sounded like that again...this thread has me playing "Madonna" nonstop, after not playing it for years... Physical Attraction, Lucky Star, Holiday & Think Of Me are are STILL amazing

Like a Prayer for the 80's.

Although, my overall favorite Madonna album is Erotica.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Erotica is pretty cool though a departure from her 80s material

Black Radio (and clubs) in New York, WBLS and KISS FM were the first to break Madonna and make her famous...they played her debut stuff NONSTOP ... thats why alot of people thought she was Black or Puerto Rican at first...it seems Madonna was heard for awhile, before she was really seen...then MTV hit big and she catered her look and sound to their demographic from that point on...brilliant career moves, but i just couldnt get into her new directions musically...but all the 20-30 year career artists change directions as they mature, and lose some fans along the way.

at this spot i used to go to regularly, right before the club closed, for a few weeks the last 2 songs would be "Physical Attraction" mixed into Alicia Meyers- " You Get The Best From Me (Say, Say, Say)" and then the lights would come on midway through the Alicia Meyers joint and it was time to close the deal and be out... 😎

I'm gonna start a 90's thread for her works, so we have a little overlap for a bit. Maybe we can hit the aughts later in September at some point.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

That’s so cool! I love hearing about clubbing in the 80s since I mainly went in the late 90s
